- Stihl 051 AV engine cylinder slowly filling with chain oil in storage. Bar oiling inadequate. Repair turns out to be a rubber sleeve that fits around the bar oil pump plunger unit.
It took forever to find to get this issue fixed with my Stihl 041 AV and at one point the shop suggested rebuilding the engine...then I found your video and explained it to them. It cost me 20 minutes of their labour + $10 part instead of paying for a rebuilt engine...thank you so much! I love my old 041 AV! The symptoms were: wouldn't start, could not pull the rope, take out spark plug, can easily pull rope, oil shooting out of the spark plug cavity and for the whole winter is sat in its own growing pool of leaking oil, which the previous shop said was normal because he failed to find the cause!
Hey, glad I could help. To keep my old beast running well I use only premium fuel, Stihl two-stroke oil and a taste of fuel injection cleaner in the mix to keep that carb clean. Good luck and thanks for the great comment.
Can you show video of removal and installation?
Very helpful. Just picked up one of these saws and I'm hoping I don't run into this problem
If someone wants to borrow a chain saw, that is the one I give them. It is so heavy that they never ask a second time! It is a true workhorse beast.
Thanks for your vid! Anyway that's a well know problem as all saws from this series are now around 30 years old and still running with the first seal. After replacement everything is fine. Be careful, there are three different types available.
Thank you for the comment. I guess I got lucky and the parts place found me the right seal the first time if I remember correctly.
Where did u find parts??
@@kevinmooney1126 Sorry, just found this now. Got the part through the local Stihl dealer.
The saw was cheap... About $30.00... The 36" bar and 3/8 chains with new drive sprocket etc. etc. required a third mortgage, however.
89 C. C. - 5.34 Cubic Inch - 21 lbs. of German precision.
*Great old saws!*
I thought my 039 was large till hoisting this behemoth.
It is an early one with no kickback chain-brake mechanism on it. It is heavy enough though not to be jumpy.
You can send the gnu whirrled order packing with this on their tails.
I sold one not too long ago , they still bring a good amount of $$$ to the right collector
I love my antique saws!
Hello. Is there an oil adjustment screw on the 051s like to let more or less oil to bar
This is from a long time ago and memory is poor. If there was a flow adjustment screw, I think that it would be recessed into the housing where the oil feeds to the bar. Sorry I can't be of more help.
There is a black lever between the clutch cover and top handle piece that adjust the amount of oil. Also, the stihl 075s and some 051s had an additional manual oil plunger.
Hey Zeke . How do I get that pump part out to replace the ring? Is there a method to it? I took the teeth off and that black plastic front seal and the seating ring
It was several years back, but what I remember is that it pulled straight out without a lot of fuss.
did that o ring fix the problem. my 050 is having the same problem.
Yes, changing the rubber sleeve thingy on the oiler pump solved the problem of the cylinder filling with bar oil. Quite the machines!
oh they are. hence the reason why I am rebuilding mine
How do you remove the oiler
With the chain off and the spikes removed, you will see the cap for the pump. I don't remember what fastener held the cover on, but the pump should pull right out after the cap is removed.
