Had all sorts of issues myself and 11.3 RELEASE fixed all my headaches, started a few threads about it on the freenas forums specially since i use AD, you should also make a video of how ACLs work with Active Directory since many people will also be looking for it. Something else i noticed is that SMART service will refuse to start on 11.3 across all my instances.
I followed the instructions in this video, I was able to create the share and access it, but I wasnt able to create a folder, I had to edit the ACLs in FreeNAS and allow full control to group (family), I was then able to create the folder, but I wasnt able to delete it, I had to edit the Permissions from Windows, there were no Users/Groups, added Family and full control via Windows and was able to delete it?? My question is did you do anything beforehand as you already had the dataset, shares set up before the video
My plex mounts are finally working correctly with this new ACL implementation. New files are showing up accordingly and easier overall to deal with permissions.
I *Love* the new permissions, with them its extremely easy to fix plex permissions (just create a user + group with the UID and GID of 972 and add them as a ACL Intem to your media dataset with read rights)
90% of my problems with FreeNAS are with permissions and accounts (both in FreeNAS and Windows). I am the only user of the NAS and I really wish it had a mode where it could just act as a reliable single-client NAS with only basic settings.
This has by far been the most troublesome bit for me being all new to TrueNAS. Some machines are ona domain I set up, some are in a workgroup, some machines are virtual and some are real. Started sharing and then decided I want to move away from AD and get everything off the domain controller. I think I've made a mess of permissions etc as actually seeing the nas or shares is a bit hit and miss and being able to access and edit files even more so.
Hi There i came up with a Problem, everytime i set the ACL it works for the day but the next day always all set rights keep vanishing and are not persistent. This is really bugging me and only occured since i upgraded to the new Freenas Version. Maybe i need Unix shares instead of Windws ? very helpful video, but if you know what might be causing my Problem of right resets would be nice if you could give a short guess or so :) Thx
Tom, could you show, how to set ACLs with Windows AD. I can't get accsess to shares by domain users group or any domain user, except domain admin. AD build on SAMBA and works on another PC.
So I started messing with the ACLs and I think I messed something up badly. I cant get any of the plugins to install and I cant start any jails. Any help???
i m new to freenas, i have configured samba as per instruction but can not get access , plz help me as soon as possible i think there is mistak in coonfiguring ACL
Ever after setting the everyone user, I still wasn't able to get into my share. Ended up going back to 11.2u7 and then going NFS for my XCP-NG test system. But looking back I think there was some hardware interference going on with my HP server. Still not completely happy with this server.
You made everything easy.... But still I have a few queries. 1) After assigning initial group to a shared folder, if permissions are to be managed by Windows, why Freenas has provided ACL's 2) Will any change in ACL's on Freenas side will affect the permission on Windows ? If Yes, why not manage permissions using Freenas ACL ? Is it not a better thing that Freenas maintains the data ( which is its prime task ), use LDAP ( which has a separate admin authority ) maintains list of users and groups and their credentials and the combo is then presented to users OS like Windows ? So the administrator or root of Freenas can not disturb the permissions, and LDAP admin can not mess with the data. Its very important from security point of view. Openldap vm ( courtesy Turnkey Linux ) has been good to provide a usable web interface to create pools. Its easy on Freenas side to integrate Openldap. Sir it will be very interesting to watch your video on this, if you like the concept. You are genius by all means.
I Some What Like The New Ui on Freenas But I Really Really HATE The New AXL BullCrap..Did Any One Ever Tell Them If It Aint Broke Dont Fix It...But They Wana Fix It Till It Breaks I Rekon !! I Just Want A Simple/Easy/Fast Way To Get Into My Dang Data And/Or Git It Working ! I Used To Love FreeNas But I Am Leaning Hard n Fast To The Hating It Now !
Click on the three dots on the "Root" Dataset (the one it creates first) Click Add Data Set. The New dataset appears below the "Root" Dataset, you can edit your permissions there.
Is this really a video about file sharing permissions in Freenas? I'm kind of confused, 95% of the video was about using the file permissions in Windows.
The document says 8Gb minimum with a recommended 1Gb ram to 1Tb storage. www.ixsystems.com/documentation/freenas/11.3-U3.1/intro.html#hardware-recommendations
guys please am new to FreeNas and i have my own web podcast that i do, i will like to no how i can share all my recorded contents from my FreeNas to the website. any help will be much appreciated.
Failed to demonstrate proper creation of the Dataset with TYPE SELECTION (Generic vs. SMB) ...TYPE MATTERS. Default is Generic. Many comments are related to this omission. You showed how to EDIT an Existing SMB, not how to CREATE a NEW one.... thumbs down....
After hours of misguided tutorials, this one actually allowed me to create a new folder on my networked FreeNAS server.... THANK YOU!

RUclips posts offering thumbs up to people using open source office suites = instant thumbs up

Please make a video discussing active directory integration. Also, LDAP integration because i think they are different, but not sure.
anyone can upload to google drive or one drive ? the ISO of freenas 11.3-u1 ?
@@KebraderaPumper Its always best to get it from the official Website. Try that.

wish you could have touched on the "primary group" and auxiliary group"
Thanks for making this Video! This update changed many things and I got confused, until I saw your video. Thanks Tom!

Love you videos going over FREENAS it helps with learning system admin stuff. I want to build a freenas box.

so as far as i understand you use AD on the backgroup in that example ?

Does FreeNas support vfio / GPU Passthrough for Windows 10 in virtual machine?
Would you mind explaining how when upgrading for example 11.2 to 11.3 importing your jails. Thanks Roy
So many useful videos from you lately - Thank you!

thks. but after all that, windows 10 machine still refuses to log into FreeNas share - incorrect user credentials - exasperating!

awesome Tom , very cool stuff and thanks a bunch :-) !!!!
I did it the same way like you, but my acc with no permission to Test1 was able to see Test1. What did I do wrong?
Very nice video....as always.
Can you please make a video on Bacula Jails & Backuppc Jails.
How do you create a "Use as home share" with a Microsoft account, so it automatically maps the correct username directory to \\192.168.3.8\homes\
i m new to freenas, i have configured samba as per instruction but can not get access , plz help me as soon as possible

If Marcus creates a new Windows Account called Anika on his Machine. Would he have Access to Anikas only share?
No, because that would only give permissions on that local machine and not on the FreeNAS where the files are stored.

Thank you for Explaining

for a 50TB nas, how much memory would you recommend? I have 16GB available, just need to know if i should use more.
The document says 8Gb minimum with a recommended 1Gb ram to 1Tb storage.

It's really strange how you looks like the man working in Hooli Datacenters in the Silicon Valley show
for freenas 11.3 there is nowhere a tutorial on how to bring users from the active directory of windows server to freenas users
I've not watched it yet but - thumb up :)
truenas guide for this pls

anyone can upload to google drive or one drive ? the ISO of freenas 11.3-u1 ?
Very bad quality on screen, when you are showing what to type.
3:12 I don't have a menu item "Edit ACL" :-(
Maybe because you don't have ACL enabled yet?
update to 11.3
