Cool. It helped even though I was not "struggling." Helped as an overview / refresher ... I feel that with the amount of 'restarts' it would be very helpful for ixsystems to make a 'reset bar' or set of quick action buttons which would have the option of > assign 'restart smb' to quick action toolbar
Glad it helped, the need to keep restarting is how the Samba service works on FreeBSD. Definately not ideal and if you're not aware of the need to restart the service then it certainly can have you banging your head on a desk.
Is this a bug? I have to restart the services? How do you do that if you have people transferring files and using stuff and you have to change the permission of a user?
I'm testing version 11.3 RC2. I have created the "test" dataset. I have created two users "user_x" and "user_y". I've assigned full permissions to user_x and everything works fine. However, for user_y I assigned read and write permissions (new ACL functionality) and unfortunately I can't get to the share. Only full permissions grant access to share, can you confirm it? Sorry for my English.
If I add a user to ACL with just read/write then yes I get the same results the user cannot access the share, there are some additional permissions required so you'd have to play this is why it's much more simple to use groups. I was able to get access to the share by giving the user additional permissions Execute, Read Attributes, Read ACL.
Thanks mate! Cheers, this has been perplexing me for years.. but I don't use Windows much. NFS and the new ACLs in 11.3 really confused me. I watched the video, still a bit lost but I think I will get it eventually.. cheers. :)
Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback, much appreciated. I may do a video on nfs, primarily we don't use windows either and also go with nfs for a unix/linux machines. But I also tend to use raw FreeBSD also as opposed to freenas.
Agree it's a pain, usually we use raw FreeBSD and can issue SIGHUP to restart Samba services which could be an option with FreeNAS. Maybe they should incorporate a way to do this from the gui or I am missing something obvious somewhere
@@sheridans I'm not entirely sure how other systems have tackled this issue, but it is definitely possible to apply user credentials and share settings without killing connections. If I look at a simple NAS like one from (for example) Synology, you can use SMB and apply anything without killing connections. This is, for me, a deal breaker since even in small offices a NAS can be constantly transferring files. SIGHUP keeps connections alive?
@@brandonphilander661 I would say no since FreeNAS runs on FreeBSD and the hyperivsor used is bhyve which doesn't support GPU passthrough currently: wiki.freebsd.org/bhyve/pci_passthru

Excellent video, thanks for the tutorial, you could create a video about installing plex on 11.3 freenas, I tried to install but I get an installation error.
Hey thanks for such a good video. Its working very good after following your tutorial here. thanks a lot for that :) can you help me with one issue, that my users from accounts group can access and create or update files that they created but not by other users from the same group. can you help?
Cheers Sam. Great video to follow along with and easy to understand the basics.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback
Fantastic Vid! Can you make a video on how to create NFS shares and mounting them on centos7?
I really appreciate this. It has been very helpful. Cheers a lot, mate!
Glad it helped! Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback, much appreciated!
Well done - JUST what I was looking for.
Thanks for taking the time to say so!
great video, this really is a quick start guide, thanks.
Thanks Alex, appreciate the feedback!

I believe this was fixed in an update, haven't test as yet though have not had the time

Is it possible to add a user to a folder and change its permission? or I have to create a group for every user ?
It's easier to create groups I found but yeah can be done no problem
Restarting SMB is a major issue for environments with multiple users as it can kill active connections. I honestly hope that's not by design.

I think one of the updates addressed this issue iirc. Will have to retest
thanks for the video, it was a great help
