- Health concerns are a common issue for athletes, but for some, it turns into a complete nightmare. This was the case for Earl Campbell. He fell into a series of health problems, from crippling arthritis to foot drop. Pain became his constant companion, leading him to addiction to painkillers and eventually needing rehab. His health struggles made his life incredibly hard!

Growing up I wanted to be Earl Campbell, probably the best power runner ever.💯
@@dubc2022 certainly in my lifetime
Football is brutal for retired NFL athletes.
Yes but these Neanderthal old heads keep saying how soft today’s players but yet you have this🤦🏽
One of the best running backs ever ❤
@@PhillipGreen-ob2my Maybe the best❤️
@@313thugbossEarl and Larry Csonka, then a different kinda running back was Walter Peyton, he had determination.
Yeah
@@roscoeshepardTrueThatTrueThat
Most underrated back ever! Unstoppable!! Loved watching him!!
@@guygonzalez7039 he wasn't underrated, he was a beast, maybe best power runner ever
NOBODY wanted to tackle this guy head on, PERIOD!
Thank you Earl, your a legend. You took it to another level.
“you’re” not “your”.

Earl is my favorite Power Running Back ever😊😊😊
My Mom was one of his bigget fans. She had a friend whose husband worked for him. And when she told her about how she followed his play from Tyler Texas to the University of Texas and then on to the pros she actually told her husband about it. One day my mom callled me yelling, crying, super estactic because Mr. Campbell called her. She was so happy. She said that if she were to pass away at that moment she would be okay 😂. She passed years later. But my memories of being forced to wear everything Houston Oilers live with me. Thank You Mr. Campbell. You are indeed the Tyler Rose.
Respect ✊ one of the great running backs in NFL history 🙏 to him and his family
Never ran out of bounds. 😮
Not if he could hit someone on the other team.
@Fred-xo3ku he and Walter Payton were the toughest, and they NEVER ran out of bounds
He always tried to get extra yards and would stay in bounds I'm so glad I grew up back then and was able to watch him play football. Absolutely one of the greatest to play the game.
I buy Earl Campbell sausage, one big reason is because he made Houston Oiler football so exciting to watch.
The head on collision with Jack Tatum was one of the hardest hits ever filmed. And Earl was upright and gained additional yardage. A real man. Respect💯
@@michaelhightower1472 I think they actually knocked each other out on that hit momentarily. Earl Campbell didn't actually run into the endzone as much as he stumbled and fell into the end zone. Talk about a violent car wreck..!
@@OriginalOldSkoolFunkyep,if I recall,he got up,then took a knee
@stephengeorge3507 I was in high school when this play happened, and I got a concussion from just watching it. 😵
If I’m not mistaken I think Earl went to the locker room after that hit.
May God continue to bless you and your family 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
When I was a kid, I couldn't wait to watch halftime highlights on MNF just to see Earl. No cable back then or online wall to wall coverage of every team and player. The old days were a lot simpler and gave this young kid something to look forward to every Monday night when taking a break from his homework.
Amen, we had to turn the TV antenna to get good reception
Campbell was the ultimate in greatness as a football player. He is an even greater person. Hard to believe but true.
No way John Riggins is regarded higher than Campbell!
And who is this narrator that pronounces Jan Stenerud as “Jan”(as in January) instead of “Yahn?”
I’m thinking the narrator never saw Campbell play.
Prime Earl had 34 inch Thighs! Mild mannered great man! A beast on the field! Unstoppable!!!
36 inches is a yard. Take some tailor measuring tape & you'll get an idea what 34 inches is. I heard his legs looked like tree trunks but I thought that was an exaggeration.now I know it was true.
@kevinforeman4485 l know Earl his thighs were 34inches ! Thanks for the math quiz! A lipstick checks the oil!!!
@kevinforeman4485 It is true an that's dipstick!!
@@davidwilliamson2341 I got that information from you. I didn't know how big his thighs were. I was just making a comparison as to how close his thighs were to being a full yard for comparison to said 34 inches. Sheeesh,, chill yo. Something bothering you you wanna talk about??? They got like AI
Therapist now.
@kevinforeman4485 Nope l don't post for views l post facts lve lived an played most sports for 60+ years was born into the NBA in the 60s ! You were responding to me like l don't know that 34 is 2 shy of a yard! Sounded like you were looking for trouble your second isn't any better!!
He got damage from his style and intensity but heredity can also contribute to the problem.l came from family of people with congenital narrowness of the spine.l played college ball at NC State and to make a long story short l have been on disability since 1996.l am not comparing myself to Earl.He is a one of the all time greats.I hope he has a joyful rest of his life.
One of the best to ever do it a complete beast
Its sad to hear this Thank you for all the memories God bless you Mr Campbell
DEFINITELY !!! One of the GREATEST NFL Players !
EC sausage was my favorite above all other brands. I wish him well.
Campbell, Walter and AP.
I was born and bred a Raider fan, but have all kinds of respect for Mr.Cambell. 🙏
The greatest back I've seen.
One of the best running backs ever
My personal favorite of all time. Unique blend of power and speed.
Probably, the greatest behind Jim Brown, when you consider the rules at the time.
He and Walter were definitely the toughest!
One of the first backs I ever watched !
Best show on grass!! Ty sir!! Blessing to u. 🙏💪🇺🇸
All of his problems come from football.
@@Okrollins1 I don’t think all of it order is genetic. I was 42 when I completed my last day of paid work. That was 20+ years ago. I don’t stenosis something else Mayo’s could not diagnose Parkinson’s Huntington type symptoms. Never played football!
Cream of Earl!
PRAYER WARRIOR, PRAY ✝️🙏✝️🙏✝️🙏✝️🙏✝️🙏✝️🙏✝️🙏
Campbell should talk about the dangers of playing football and other contact sports.
He’s too loyal to the NFL to do that.
Favorite back of all time for me period. He added an element of fear for the defender. So close to beating the great Steeler teams of the day.
So sorry great man, it is a rough ride physically afterwards...Look at Deion with his foot and those fingers, Marcellus with those fingers😢 Much respect❤
I have a lot of respect for the way EC played the game. Wishing him nothing but the best.
That’s when it was real football An I’m so glad I got to watch the best in those generations, god bless them all
I love Earl Campbell hot links!
E. Campbell was a great!!! He is one of the many NFL players who suffer long term debilitating conditions from play football! He gave it his all the whole time he played!! Bless!!
As a Longhorn fan, he was the first player I admired and wanted to be.
He made millions. He knew that an NFL career may mean life altering ailments after football.
MILLIONS!! What the hell are you smoking? He played in the late 70s early 80s. His big contract was for 6 years 1.4million.
@@goldnarms435 And at the time that was a LOT of money, enough to set him up in business afterward. He still knew the dangers and obviously the benefits outweighed the risks in his mind.
@@MarkMay-cr6bv it wasn't "millions", and it wasn't a LOT of money.
Earl Campbell was a class act. He did his job without any showboating.
Him and Payton wher my favorites.
I hate football now
I was the bus driver that thanksgiveing day at Texas stadium
Earl took time with me and was a nice person.
That's cool, man! Thanks for sharing!
Nothing sad about the way he lives. He has lived three scores and ten, owns great cookout hot links, a home, money to take care of himself, and his family. There is nothing sad about those blessings! 🙄
Earl I’ve been a fan since I was a kid.. love ya man ❤
As a Browns fan…back when Db’s were like 6’ 200….when the Oilers came to town…and Earl Campbell was the opponent….I mean forget it…one of the best EVER…LOVE YA Earl
Those years of physical contact will take toll on the body later in life. Earl Campbell was the toughest runner in football 🏈
I am proud to have had three great conversations with him during my time, the first of which let him know that my dad referee his high school football games in Tyler. He is with Jesus and that’s more important than anything. ❤
I met Earl at a Kroger in the Meat department. He stood there ad we talked for 15 minutes. A great honor
WHAT A GREAT SOUL OF A MAN!
He NEVER ran out of bounds.....He ran over people
Loved Earl, modeled my running in high school football after him.
his hot links are the bomb, no lie....
At the U. of Texas, Earl played 40 games, had 267 run attempts for 4,443 yards and 40 TDs. He averaged an amazing 5.9 yards per carry.
I miss my oilers
This 230 pound tank was faster than defensive backs. Incredible.
Earl Campbell was a great powerful running back who's a hall of famer. Unfortunately it came at a high and painful cost as you can see. With his style of play I'm surprised he wasn't nicknamed "The Wrecking Ball" since he punished opposing tacklers.
Being around to actually see Earl Campbell play during his prime with the Oilers it was really a shame to see how many times during a game that he ran the ball. The Oilers ran him on nearly every down for the entire game, season after season. It appeared criminal to watch as he would take punishing blow after blow and the team would just keep handing off the ball to him.
He beat a bad painkiller addiction which is HOF worthy itself. Tyler Rose is one of the best ever.🐕🏈
Walking is a super power
Fasting is a miracle
All of this is "Bum Phillips" And the Oilers Organization fault !!!!!
He ran the "Fuck" out of this man like he was a machine. I grew up in Houston born and raised, Came up during the Luv Ya Blue era. He had "No Help" and our wide receivers were "SHIT"!!!! These idiots didn't know how to draft good players and Earl was all we had back then. We kept getting drunk or dope up Quarterbacks who were at the end of their careers or players nobody else wanted. And playing on that hard ass "Astro Truff" didn't help either.
Yeah he was one of the best of the bests among other he was a working machine
Earl Cambbell, Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, Big Jim Brown who retired early, they left it on the field for the NFL. Those guys that are still alive the NFL owes them everything. Recently the retired players are getting a little more $$$ from the NFL. they are not receiving nearly what they are worth. They helped build what we know and love...NFL Football. I tip my hat to all those brothers.
He had the largest thighs in the NFL. The equipment suppliers said they had four sizes of thigh pads, small, medium, large, and Earl Campbell.
So,so fun to watch ❤
The number one power running back ever. Of all the great NFL power backs, Earl was special. Riggo was great, but Earl was stronger and faster. Jim Brown is in a whole other category.
He's a Titan. The world has been told, and shown to remember Titians.
He is more than just 'entertainment'. He is a guardian of Earth.
Tennessee was the state which dared to declare a National Christian Heritage Month.
He was exciting to watch
I remember when a player from LA Rams bragged that he would make Earl's life in NFL difficult, he promptly ran over 3/4 of the defense on one memorial play.
He is on the wrong end of the bruising, crushing hits that he once took out on others. I hope that the the NFL will take care of those who played such a dangerous sport.😊
Russell Okung. NFL lineman. 330lbs
Retired fasted for 40 days loses 100lbs
People talk about all the money these guys make during their career. But you never hear about the injuries they have for life afterwards. Most, by the time they are late 50's or in their 60's are taking monthly shot and several meds. Sure they have their therapies. But those only go so far when you turn old. I only played college ball and I am now 62. I have severe arthritis everywhere despite keeping my weight down. You do what you can do. I can imagine a bruiser like Campbell has aches and pains everywhere. I hope he has great doctors who are pain mngt specialist. He was one of the best ever done it..Bar none. I wish him nothing but peace and happiness.
They ranked John Riggins and Jim Brown ahead of Earl Campbell. Of the fullbacks in NFL history, I would rate Jim Brown first followed by three great players tied for second. They would be Cookie Gilchrist, Earl Campbell, and Franco Harris. All four of those fullbacks were great. They could play on my team anytime.
Too many massive collisions, but he was something to see.
The Oilers ran Earl Campbell to the ground. They forgot he was human not a machine.
Earl was a beast the only player I’ve seen take Earl down one on one was Lambert
Scoal Brother.. that’s what he said in his Scoal tobacco commercial…
EXISTING TO DIE IS NOT LIVING … PERIOD.
I lived very close to the practice facility on Braeswood and would go see the team come in on Monday morning. Earl drove a Skoal Van. His wife would drive him to the facility on Mondays after the game and 6 players would meet the Van in the parking lot. Earl was laying in the back of the van. They would have to pick him up and carry Earl to the Jacuzzi. His wife told me it would take hours before he could move due to all the hits he took.
Such an icon
He definitely was a powerful running back in he took lot's of punishment. And ditch, out a lot, as we'll, a beast, 😢😢😢 praying 🙏 that 🙏 he will get some relief 🙏 😢😢😢
Bum Phillips had only 3 plays in his playbook; Earl right, Earl left, Earl up the middle!
I hate this AI voice!
There is no way he isn’t the greatest to ever play the game. Jim brown and John Riggins were great but he was better.
GREATEST POWER BACK IN NFL HISTORY WHO WAS A BETTER POWER BACK?
Yep, he was a great running back but more importantly, he is a wonderful human being.
Jim Brown is definitely number 1 Earl Campbell was better than Riggins
This is the ugly downside of A career in NFL Owners could care less Sad
Class act!
Houston ran him into the ground.... it was horrible how they kept using him on the field....
He loves country and was at Austi City Limits a few times
Incredible...
Earl Campbell ranked behind John Riggins???? Who made that list??? Stevie Wonder????
Isaiah Robinson got caught flat footed and had no chance
Even that CLASSIC M.N.F. game against the Dolphins Earl was slow to get up. Football is a taxing sport ....especially a running back.
There was no mention of what was sad about his life or the way he currently lives. Clickbait crap.
Wow! 70!
Damm I'm not the only one ask Bruce Mathews my teammate best Elvis act ever
Ranking Earl Campbell, the 3rd most powerful running back in NFL history is A Joke. Earl Campbell,is number 1 most. Powerful running back in NFL history.
Awesome PRB. Lead with his head too many times. Soilder on sir.😊
