Another excellent mini documentary, Rich. I'd seen all of Stevenson's Olympic victories, when I was a kid & always wondered what would've happened had he turned pro. It was great to hear you had the English commentary with Harry Carpenter at the 76 Olympics. It's a shame the 84 Olympics were boycotted by Cuba, as Stevenson may have stood alone as a 4 time champ I really appreciate the back story as I knew little of it. Bless up bro 👊

Great athlete and a elegant yet devastating boxer to watch..Obviously he had the amateur boxing political elite protecting his reputation and record but boy what a puncher he was, you still can’t argue against the great equaliser when his right hand lands, and that was a show of greatness with his knockout of Biggs considering that his best years had passed. Who knows what would of happened if he turned pro and personally I believe it’s very honourable that he viewed personal achievement and love from his nation and supporters above chasing the dollar (Some will argue him being misguided and used though) but it may of been to late and be unable to adjust and develop into a professional boxer by the time he was being offered the pro fights. Great documentary Rich, you are so good at doing this, I’m very appreciative, thanks. Viva Cuba 🇨🇺and God bless America 🇺🇸

Every true boxing fan must save a copy of this documentary for their archives. I doubt very much that we will ever see such a dominant heavyweight in the amateur ranks again. As a student in Romania in the 70s I had the opportunity to follow closely the careers of boxers from the Eastern Block, and of course political ally Cuba. I remember boxers like Igor Visotzky, Mircea Simon, the Cutov brothers Simon and Calistrat, Sixto Soria etc., all so remarkably talented, but among them all Teofilo Stevenson remains unmatched in terms of accomplishments and historical stature. Thanks Rich, for a real gem!

I remember the shock when Stevenson KO'd Bobick back in the day when American heavyweights had dominated the Olympics for three straight games. Stevenson would not have been able to jump from being an amateur to fighting pros without a year or so of intensive preparation. He certainly had the tools, but preferred being Castro's pet. At least that's the American point of view. Is there another perspective to his legacy?

He hung around the sport long enough to face some really young undeveloped fighters and by knocking them out , he rose to the top of the amateur world. One of the best right hands ever. Speculation with how he would have fared as a pro is interesting I suppose. He was composed and patient. A well balanced athlete with excellent timing. The comparisons with Lennox Lewis's right hand make sense. I'm a huge Lewis fan but I think that the right hand of Stevenson was more natural and quicker. Incredible knockout ratio for an amateur. He was content with his life it seemed. Politics aside there is a lesson to be learned there. Great work Rich! Thank you once again.

    Teofilo Stevenson
    Amature career record: 302-22-8 = 332 matches.
    - Olympic Order Award 1987.
    - 3x Olympic heavyweight gold medalist: 1972, 1976 & 1980.
    - 3x World Championship heavyweight gold medalist: 1974, 1978 & 1986.
= Total of International medals: 17 gold medals + 2 bronze medals = 19 medals.
    # Stevenson is the first man ever to win 3 Olympic gold medals in the heavyweight class. Only fellow Cuban Felix Savon have repeated that feat (1992, 1996 & 2000).
Stevenson was not allowed to compete in the 1984 & 1988 Olympic games due to political issues that made Cuba boycoting the Olympics.
Something that many means stole 2 medals away from his career, with the 1984 games likley to have been his 4rd straight gold medal. Stevenson had already won a match against eventual super heavyweight gold medal winner Tyrell Biggs.
In 1988 it would IMO likley have been a bronze medal due to advanced age. Ray Mercer won in heavyweight and Lennox Lewis in the super heavyweight class.

The best Cuban 🇨🇺 boxer ever in my opinion. Too bad he wasn't allowed to go pro. Imagine what could've been, if Stevenson was in the pro ranks 🤔🤔🤔??? Ali would've beat Stevenson. That legendary voice of Howard Cosell ...I remember him on ABC Wide World of Sports 👍...

I believe that when trying to assess how he would of fared as a professional, one should remember the following:
    * He never faced any amateur with the punching 👊 power of a Shavers, Norton, or Foreman as an amateur
    * Stevenson never faced anyone who had the type of left hook as a Frazier or the speed of an Ali
    * Ali is correct about what would he have done when a fight went into the later rounds
    * a particular flaw in his fighting style was how he often stood straight up in a more rigid style. For example, could he bob and weave effectively?
As for him not wanting to turn professional, he already was a professional. All Soviet Bloc athletes were professional. Their athletic activities and livelihoods were subsidized by their country. The difference between Stevenson and someone like Ali was that Stevenson sold his athletic skill cheaply and not at fair market value.

    • @eldrickc3479
      @eldrickc3479 2 месяца назад

Also you miss that neither Ali, Foreman or Frazier faced someone with the long reach of Stevenson, a decent boxing skills and a terrible and wicked punch power. Nobody knows what could have happened, due to fighting styles possibly Frazier could have had the better chance but Stevenson was a rare combination of styles, was a top slugger mixed with some decent style. Ali was older by late 70s so the age was a real factor, the same with a possible fight Stevenson vs Tyson in 1986, youth would be a factor. A key point is that Ali was clever enough to deny the choice of 5 fights under amateur rules of 3 rounds. If someone like Ali said no, you can wonder why

I specifically remember the Clark fight driving my father insane because of the home cooking. He pointed to that fight and said if Stevenson was serious about ever fighting professionals pressure guys like Frazier and Norton would break him mentally and better schooled and conditioned boxers like Ali or Holmes would have him exhausted by round 5 and easy pickings.

@Soccerman1963 his output and style would absolutely change and be nowhere near as effective. In a 3 round fight he was exhausted keeping Clark away from him exhausting his resources to do it. He was very unlikely to have dealt with mid level 70s heavyweight pressure let alone the elite guys. His style was perfect for what he was, but it's unlikely he'd have been more. There are a lot more great amateurs who don't excel as pros and mediocre amateurs who become excellent pros in those days. Elite level amateurs now are different because of how much better their fundamentals are. Stevenson was what he was and that was unlikely to be anything more.

    • @patrickmullin1205
