I grew up watching and listening to Howard in the 70s, and nobody missed Monday night football. The halftime highlights everybody talked about in school
This is a thorough, sensitive coverage of a complicated man. It was neither defensive nor condemning. Well done.
Cosell was very entertaining on MNF. The trio of Cosell, Meridith, and Gifford, was the best MNF pairing!!
Not OJ.
..he invented football...
Yes that was the best MNF team
When I was with ABC at their building on 6th Ave, how loved our shoe shine guy Anton, and Howard would let him run his shoeshine business out of his office. If you need a shoe shine, you called Howard and asked for Anton, ten minutes later Anton showed up. Anton bought a house on the money he made over the years working out of Howard’s office. He was not a racist in anyway I ever saw or heard.
You are equating a man working for his living as tho a white savior couldn’t have been racist because the guy bought a house. Just say that you are clueless and white without announcing that you are white and clueless
He certainly helped and stood by Muhammed Ali!
I never thought that he was...NEVER. Im glad that as a black man that i wasnt raised to hate caucasians or anybody for that matter. I was to respect all people.
It's been said that Cosell could do a play by play commentary on a chess match and make it sound exciting.
You mean he could do play by play for great boxing matches and make people want to turn the channel and watch something else.
Given all, I think Howard was a good and decent human being.
I think pretty much everyone who knew him would disagree.
He was, by most counts, an arrogant narcissist.
He also said on national TV while doing a World Series game that the face of baseball player Willie McGee was "not unlike that of E.T,"
For anybody to think that Cosell was racist, you're simply wrong ! He supported the actions of the 2 black Olympic athletes and loved Ali ! As is witnessed in this story, will we ever rid our country of people who continue to create a divisions between white and black people over such ridiculous reasons. I'm a white man, had a son, and when he was little he used to run around quite a bit. I used to call him a "little monkey" for that reason and that reason alone. My friends, both black and white, laughed about it. This was in the 1980's ! There is a small group of people in this country today who continue to look for reasons to cook up the subject of racism. We should all be sick of them by now ! We have much larger issues to deal with than where we were born, our race, our color, and our creed. It's shameful what was done to Cosell because he was already where we all wish we were with this issue !!
a good example would be Bill Clinton saying out of the blue, "I think it's time we all had a national dialogue on race". we the people who are black, white, Hispanic, and so forth, didn't find that particularly necessary. he wanted to raise a fuss so we'd not notice his taking cash from the Chinese, and the stains on Monica's dress. what a fraud this guy was.
Don't judge a man by one statement
Assainating peoples character posthumously is worse than anything he ever could do, it needs to stop.
Howard was NOT a racist of any kind. He never should have been fired.
He had said the same thing about a white player, Mike Adamle, RB of the K.C. Chiefs back in the '70s
Howard had previously used the
“little monkey” comment on TV when describing the play of a white running back named Mike Adamle. It is on tape.
Not to mention in all that football gear covering them up (especially seeing from the back side) how are you even supposed to know if the guy is black or white?
The incident with the racial slur shows how even well-intentioned actions can have serious repercussions.
Howard Cosell was a great sports caster. I distinctly remember the night he made the comment which was and I quote " Look at that Little Monkey Go" . In my opinion it was not a racial comment but more a testament to Alvin Garrett's speed. It's funny that no one mentions the fact that the following Monday Night game a player was running away from the defense and Dandy Don sarcastically said, hey look at the orangutan go. Howard then said "That will be enough of that Don". Howard Cosell was not a racist. I personally loved him and his approach to Sports Broadcasting.
may his Soul R I P Howard Cosell
Howard Cosell’s comment of “that little monkey” is tantamount to an endearing comment one would say with regard to a young child and their amusing physical ability, to consider anything otherwise would be ridiculous and an attempt to make “something out of nothing” in the process … Howard Cosell NEVER intended to humiliate Alvin Garrett but rather praise Garrett’s achievement at the time of the broadcast.
Howard Cosell was my favorite commentator.😢😢😢
I remember this now. All of those so called friends that were black at that time. They could have stepped up for there friend. Poor Howard. They could have stepped in and made it go away. It just showed everyone that all that phony friendships with those people.
Black people have no power against racist white media. That's why you have Fox News today. They often target Jews too.
"You don't know who your friends are until you need them," Truer words were never spoken
Howard in my opinion your the Goat Rip I enjoyed your commentary more than some of the games you covered ❣️💯
He said while commentating on a football game, “look at that monkey run”! Regarding a black player carrying the ball.
That was Robert Newhouse a running back for Dallas if I remember right
What's your point?
He said “Look at that little money run” about Alvin Garett of the Washington football team.
@@ejr5480 l think it was WR Charlie Brown. And to this day I still don't believe he said it with any ill content. He was just caught up in the moment. But still it was not the right choice of words to describe the play. That being said, Howard Cosell was a true professional and not a racist.
@@johnharris3455ok
man we LOVE this man no matter what he said .
Cowell was a man you loved to hate. He got under alot of people's skin.
There is a clip of Ali and Howard talking in Howard’s backyard. And while they’re talking, Howard’s three year old granddaughter is running around. And Howard says to her,” come here you little monkey. “
It was disappointing that Ali never came. out publicly in Howard’s defense after the slip up on MNF.
I had no idea that Howard zCossell was from NC. RIP Howard.
...the agony of defeat -- there is technology that can now scan all of Cosell's broadcasts and prove cosell was a thoughtful and excited sportscaster and highly influenced the industry...like don knotts in comedy... loved both
The Bible defines a RACE as something one RUNS and does not define anyone's nationality, ethnicity, language or kindred, skin color, hair texture or facial features!
A race for resources
I'm not sure how I feel but I will say this as an amateur boxer for myself for many years when USA boxing team would fight again other foreign countries Howard would almost seem to be on the other countryside instead of American boxers when commentating on the sport a good example would be the 1984 Olympic boxing championships in the flyweight division was Steve McCrory versus a Yugoslavian fighter Howard seemed to be in favor of the Yugoslavian fighter although Steve McCrory seem to be winning the fight easily p and I have watched him cheer on other European amateur boxing teams versus USA fighters
It's probably because a lot of US boxers were black
Alcatraz, you could even escape from that Rocky Blair persn
Got drunk at Franklin Field during a telecast. Who could forget him calling the wr a "little monkey"? One of the best ever.
that scene from the Woody Allen film w/ Louise Lasser was ahead of it's time, and a rare acting gig for Cosell.
You're referring to "Bananas" a movie Woody Allen in which he starred & directed-It was released in 1971-Enjoyed Cosell's appearance.
Sorry, that should've read "Bananas" was a movie which Woody Allen both starred & directed-It was released in 1971.
thanx, I know it was 'BANANAS'. but Cosell's scene in particular parodies ABC's Wide World of Sports, where sex is the sport. it was ahead of it's time because Woody dared to go out on the edge. after all, '71? Sly Stallone has a small scene in it, on the subway, I think. gotta watch it again. hilarious!
After 1983 Monday Night Football has been missing something ever since after Cosell left
I remember Cosell well. What a LOSER. We used to watch MNF with the sound turned off, while listening to Hank Stram doing the radio broadcast.
Dude this is a documentary. I wanted to hear what Cosel said not his and the other guy's whole life story. Too much filler! Get to the point!
I had a friend (white) who affectionally nick-named his little daughter Monkey. The rap on Costell was just an excuse to dump him. Who among us has never made a comment that unintentionally hurt or offended someone. Mr. Cosell got on my nerves often but he was a very knowledgeable sportscaster.
Nobody can believe that photographer.
I was between the ages of 15 not even 17 but his reaction to me maybe
Jeezus how long does this thing go on?
Howard Cowell was fired many times during his career, but surprisingly, it was never for anything he said. He was always considerate and civil, at a time when whbite
No. Only you "know" it. Cosell was another example of a so-called "chosen" jew using blacks to get ahead and - in the process - antagonize whites. Then - after achieving notoriety - shows is self-absorbed "superiority complex" obnoxious, despicable, "truculent" side. Cosell was truly someone I - and many millions the world over - loved to hate again and again.
Howard Cosell had a brilliant memory. He could recall any players from high school to college to nfl.
Here they go im80 year d li ive in the capital of the USA a football lover pf the Washington Ŕed skin he made a racist comment bout one of àre players on national tv Monday night. This is way malneted people of the USA are feðup with the lies 😢😢😢
I don't believe the comment was intended as a racial slur. Cosell sucked up to Blacks, especially Ali, who probably made Cosell's career.
It is alright as long as he does it towards everyone!
It's to bad Mr.Cosell was able to sing Rap music with all the 'N' ,B & W words he would have been still employed back then.
That time I seen Howard cosell life go on and on I seen how it could sell on his turf Manhattan 57th Street 5th avenue Madison avenue all up in through there
"How sre ya?" Howard's three words to me. 🧐😁
I always liked him very much
There is no great persona without the usual and often envious detractors.
Not HC but i remember the weatherman uncle weatherbee did a show one night (new years eve) i believe I was young
He was totally drunk! People watched him it seems for years! They pulled him off the show for a while i don't remember if he ever got it back!
Howard Neal , beca😢 I'm not weird.
At one point, this video states that Emmy was 69 when she died. Then, about 40 seconds later, it says she was 54 when she passed. Then, another minute or so later, it says she was 69 again when she croaked. So, which is it?
It shouldn't take a half hour to tell you why he got fired!
LONG WINDED CLICK BATE!!!
Ikr
Ali tolerated Cossell and they worked good on camara, but Ali didn't like Cossell. Cossell once told Ali if it wasn't for him he would still be stealing cars in Kentucky. Let the truth be said Ali didn't need Cossell but Cossell needed Ali. The hate and disrespect Cossell held for Ali is evident in his commentating of Ali's fights and the way he was always on the side of Ali's opponents.
Too much talk for a simple phrase!!
He made Ali a legend .
He was a great man, I remember my grandpa and my mother everyday sunday going to the old met stadium then monday night football growing up it didnt mean that much to me but looking back it was time i wouldn't trade for all the money in the world and he was a staple in our family along with a few other greats as well. he broke barriers any way you cut it and we needed men like him.
My fleeting moment hell yes a second
Cosell was a lush! That's why Roone Arledge, his boss, took him off the air. Like all of us, we reach a certain age & we can't hold our liquor anymore! It was an inside joke in those days when Howard would crap out after he gave the half-time highlights, "Howard's got an ear infection! The cough medicine is making him groggy!" They came up with some doozies. I liked Howard! Booze is a problem for lots of people, sadly!
They were all drunks, it’s how business was done!
That's the least of my concerns give me my laugh
Howard Cowell was considered the most irritating sportscaster in human history. And believe it or not, Cosell did not wear a toupee or hair piece of any kind, although "Dandy" Don Meredith had his bald spot permanently covered with bright green AstroTurf. Meredith was color blind, and by the time he found out about this practical joke, the wig glue had hardened, forming a permanent bond with his cranium.
Bro you must didn't see the interview with Ali, when Ali lifted it up and Howard said(why did you do that)
Even if Howard's remark wasn't intended to be racist it sure came across to viewers as racist and his apology rang hollow.
@@haroldalston3349I saw that interview. It was hilarious. Ali loved messing with him. Howard and Ali had a love sometimes a not so loving relationship. But I think they had a respectful relationship as they grew older.
Let's not get it twisted, Ali MADE Cosell's...Not the other way around
Gawd-awful narrative about a premier sports-reporting personality. Thanks to my college pal, Bob Rosburg Jr., I got to work as a go-fer at the 1982 Kentucky Derby, and while there wasn't much to do for me or Mr. Cosell during the days leading up to the race, he would sit and opine about almost anything with nary an audience, all with good humor.
I miss these old-timers.
They used to make watching football fun.
Jimmy (the Greek), Mike Ditka, and the others.
I stopped watching the NFL, mostly due to sports broadcasters.
Since 2002.
Cancel culture BS-Cosell loved sports figures male, female, black, white, brown, red-the only person he ever intentionally insulted was dandy don
Very poor put together video such as back and forth in time and pictuers do not coincide with information being told. Hard to follow
It was a mistake for people to be outraged about his statement which to me , knowing how well he knew the players, was a term of endearment. It’s a perfect example of people taking issue with racist comments becoming so outraged they destroy someone for miss speaking yet can’t find the energy to get involved making the world better . We are all so ready to criticize and condemn as long as we don’t have to do anything or go anywhere but the couch.
The video fails to mention that Howard would call his young Grandkids "little monkees" when they would run around the house. He used it to describe white players as well. A mistake. But, given his long history of being a champion of Black athletes and giving them a voice when others wouldn't, this should not have been the crisis that it turned out to be. After a long career, there were probably many people who didn't mind seeing Cosell knocked down a peg. Petty.
Something just bit me on the ass hahaha
People -- especially old Americans --- just don't take the time to listened to what they thought was going to be a good video ! It would be nice to start it off with a LIST of what you plan to say and even show at what place the reader can read it ! Lots of Americans ---I hope a lot --- love God and if you have anyone in your video that even mentions His Name that would be a very big PLUS for your video ! Cosell said ONE THING I remember that got him in hot water, even tho it was the TRUTH ! He said that most black athletes WERE REALLY superior to whites because of the stuff done to their forefathers as slaves that made them develop very strong muscles and bodies ! Ask Arnold Schwarzenegger I believe he would gladly explain this to you . All the so called great heroes Cosell , Trump , Lincoln , Biden , Namath , Elvis and even You and I will answer one day to God Almighty with a SEALED mouth and be Judge to HELL or to Heaven ! Are you ready truly to face that day ????
Im a black man and loved Howard Cosell it was refreshing to hear his voice. That meant that my then team the Dallas Cowboys and my boy Tony Dorsett was about play lol
No, he did not deserve it
I use love to watch Howard Cosell and Muhammad Ali
I think he was a straight forward no nonsense guy. Definitely no a racist!
You was a great broadcaster especially with Monday night football but same as it is today. People say the damndest things pay Donald Trump for example
Taylor made for one or the other. The gay attendence dropped. 😅😅😮😢😊
Cosell and was the best at hiz craft
nice
Arel was not a racist. He took a stance for civil rights at a time with many other sports people would not do so the term little monkey is a cute little enduring term that even parents used to describe their children. It was nothing racist about it now there were someone else in that booth I would question them more so than I would question Howard, in fact, I would never question Howard cell concerning the usage of that term.
This a prime example of bull shit to get attention
Smoke.
I---always--loved--the--guy--they--dont--make-them-like--that--anymore--Ali--either
You mean CLAY.
ABSOLUTELY...NOT.. The man the person the legend is an ICONIC TV broadcast PROFESSIONAL ENTERTAINER...if cosell was discriminating he would have distanced himself from black people completely like most discriminating people.. sports was his life..and sports are dominated by black athletes so why bite the black skin THAT feeds you... let's get real networks world
Nobody complained about the comment. Weak executives were the only ones who took offense.
I remember whe he had John Lennon on.
He told no lies. He was 💯 percent correct and everyone knows it
Howard Cossell was not a Racist ! I find it interesting that videos like this 1 focus on non-living persons ! 😢🐷
I was glad to learn some things about Howard but you guys go on and on ugh
Howard was anything but racist. Muhammad Ali always appreciated his support when Ali refused to join the military. my personal dislike of him was because of his obvious (to me) anti Yankee sentiments. did enjoy his MNF work and his appearances with Ali are priceless.
I hated Howard but I was watching that night and knew exactly what he meant. It had nothing to do with race.
That was my first introduction to a reasonable person falling victim to woke BS.
They call each other that I’ve heard let it go
Click bait
You
It was like you gave me a nod acknowledgment neither I him and I not to give a shit
Muhammad Ali THE GREATEST GAVE HIM A SUCCESSFUL CAREER AND POSITIVE NOTARY MENTION, IF IT WASN'T FOR MUHAMMAD ALI HOWARD WOULD HAVE BEEN NOTHING BUT A DIME A DOZEN JOURNALIST AND REPORTER.
HAHAHA
Et magee
