Ya know the intro music to archive was creepy and spooky. But, for protocol it feels way more threatening.
The music from TMA was like eerie and gave the sense of unease below the surface. TMP just punches you in the face with a very authoritarian horn like, “EVIL BEAUROCRACY!”
Oh thank Fork I’m not alone! TMP’s intro has NO right to go so hard but it does and I look over my shoulder when I hear it.
The ending music is so good. I want to listen to it nonstop.
archive how do more of a sense like a spooky house or a suspicious alley. protocol how are the sounds more like a beast waking up from a deep Slumber ready to kill pretty much everyone it sees.
I got to be honest I think the first one was creepier. This one to me feels like it's trying too hard or something I don't know it just does not hit the spooky notes for me, oh I know what it is It just comes across as this thing is broken and imminent a instead of this thing is malicious, hidden and dangerous... Edit: ohhhh, they are starting to blend them...
There were so many references in this episode like "extinct itself" "being force fed my own keyboard" and it reminded me a lot of Jane's statement
I love it !
I think the extinction references fuels the theory that it is growing to be the dominant entity, plus the things with the code (technology) consuming Colin
@@imalittleladyAnd one thing I've noticed, first of all there's a ton of alchemy symbols in the show and in the logo, the upside down philosophers stone for the logo especially is interesting, and every statement so far has been about someone slowly changing, both physically and mentally
@@Nikowo1610 alchemy was a big part of the ARG too
@@imalittlelady Plus, the Extinction in TMA wasn't referred to as like, a violent and fiery extinction, right? It was described, if I remember correctly, as extreme climate change, and the rapid advancement of technology turning all living things into machines? I may be wrong.
But, if people are right about Jon/Martin/Jonah being trapped _inside_ the computer, and computers (ie technology) playing a huge role in this series, well...
Remember how everything in the Magnus Institute was carefully designed to benefit the Eye? And now this institute seems to have a climate that would benefit the Extinction. I think the foreshadowing couldn't be more clear.
@@bugjamsThe Extinction was not one particular looming event. What you described was accurate to the domain Jon and Martin found in the apocalypse, but that’s only a single manifestation. Other statements relating to it delved into very different scenarios, like nuclear annihilation, or a world where everyone is so malnourished and hungry that they ravenously tear the flesh off anything, even other people, and more. The constants that define a manifestation of The Extinction, as I understand it, are:
1) the world as we know it ends, in a literal or figurative sense
2) humanity either changes or is replaced by something unrecognisable and horrible
3) whatever remains still feels fear. A lot of fear
Of course, the Fear only manifests in the limited way that all Fears do, so all statements read like they are glimpses into a dark, twisted possible future, and the one about the nukes had a very strong element of ‘prophesying’ to it, but there’s no definitive promise to any of them, they’re just designed to make people afraid of the idea of Extinction. If it truly manifested, literally any form would do if it followed the constants. Heck, it could even come about through the other Fears, like all humanity becoming corrupted, or fleshy, or reduced back to the instincts of the hunt.
Anyway, I rambled on a bit, but the point is that any change would do, so if your suspicious of technology playing a big role in this and maybe taking people over, you probably have a right to be. Personally, I’m scared by the fact that Fears seem to be mixing more commonly in this world, making the idea of a Extinction hybrid manifestation much more of a possibility. Like a new sort of ritual level threat, perhaps, but with the capacity to actually work.
1:49 he’s already dealing with it like it’s sentient… great
It's as though Freddy's trying to make Colin *_Spiral_* into madness...
I wonder if it's Freddy or one of the other three
Collin is so relatable for pleading with machines and threatening them with death in the next breath. I feel that.
I know it’s not strictly the Fears from TMA but this 100% gives a Flesh and Corruption team up and I love it 🥰
Plus a bit of spiral for the inescapable garden.
My thoughts exactly
Jared would have loved that garden✨️
@MaskedStranger-pz7nm That would make sense. Compressed all back together from the transition to a new universe.
I would’ve said an End/Corruption mix but I definitely see the Flesh aspect as well.

Babe wake up, new cosmic horrors just dropped!!!
if there is one thing more demented than a Scottish person saying "purple burglar alarm," it's a Scottish IT technician working on a program with root code from the 90s. Honestly would act the same way under the circumstances.
Root code I see what you did there.
"I doubt there is a god for a paracitic garden that whispers with the voice of the woman you clearly murdered and sort of turns you into a tree."
Maybe not just one, but this REEKS of The Corruption, with a hint of The Flesh, 'cause our favourite gardner, Jared, would have loved this
I also think that the end fits - but I have to admit that ppl seem pretty on point in pointing out that it seems to be a blend of fears - The End, Flesh, Spiral, Eye, Corruption, Hunt all fit really well (Eye and spiral because he's on the run, being dangerously paranoid, and then getting lost in a strange garden with no escape)
I also think that Desolation, Stranger, Buried, and Extinction also have a vague sense in here. I've only listened to this once so I most certainly missed things so there might actually be even more (or less if I misheard/interpreted)
It's definitely a fun idea that they compressed in order to make it to other worlds, and so now they're in the process of spreading out like they did at the beginning of the world in the previous universe. At any rate, I'm excited to see where this story goes!
Yeah, there isn't really a horror that deals with plants, is there? Corruption might be closest, as it deals with insects and rot, which while gross to humans, are technically natural processes. It's just that the connotation of the word "corruption" doesn't really apply here, corruption makes you think of rot and bad stuff, but this is just a guy turning into a nice, green plant. He even says he "got the rot out" of himself.
It's also not very flesh-y since it sounds like he's completely abandoning his flesh body, not becoming a flesh-plant like in Jared's realm.
the part about going back into the earth slowly with awareness of the changes but gradually less panic sounded quite relaxing and beautiful, actually, guided meditation material tbh, except for the murdering and the running from the law part
besides that little, tiny, microscopic detail, yeah! I completely agree, it sounds blissful.
Alright folks, its episode 3 which means we're gonna start theorizing in the comments again :)
So we know JMJ stands for Jon, Martin, and Jonah- and the system trying to "off itself" at any chance is probably more literal than they think. The trailer even has some lines of code intializing "primary master 1 & 2" & "primary slave 1" although the first two stated "error" while the 2nd master's state is "undefined".
Sam's joke about being forced to eat his keyboard is a callback to the Sergey Ushanka statement from TMA (ep 65 - Binary), probably a hint to the situation that Jon and Martin are in right now, sentient but unconscious as "the angles cut when they try to think". Gonna throw my two cents out there and say that Sam bringing in IT is gonna have some VERY interesting effects on the "FREDI'S" behavior in later episodes.
Edit: was talking about the star-crossed lovers comment and it just hit me that Norris was the one who read the statement about feeling the regret of killing the person you loved, FUCK.
The star crossed lovers, in universe we DO know. Maddie Webber is one, and Greg or Gary or something is the other. He has his wife's file and some random man. Who he one off mentions later, twice (" Would I need to show ID for that? I could lie, use a false name. I could be Gerald Andrews. I’m sure Maddie would have loved that."]
His wife was having an affair, he killed her (almost got caught doing it)
@@CheziahKatt yeah I relistened to the episode and caught onto that bit, missed it the first time. Sounds like he did get caught since he was on the run, but he'd gotten away with it for a while.
Never mind that we've got the new fears that are taking over now that the old Apex ones are out of the picture. It looks like we've got some of the hyper modern ones like inadequacy or social rejection which was the whole painter body dysmorphia thing and the fear of being fundamentally changed by external factors so basically the thing that makes people afraid of vaccines and GMOs as described by getting sick and turning into a tree which is honestly a heck of a lot closer to an actual medical condition than most people might be aware of, lol. They're even hinting at fear of not being able to understand complex systems from the past or technology degradation fears. Basically the loss of information through excessive innovation.
Aww hell yeah, it only took to episode 3 to truly, properly unsettle me. I can't wait for the nightmares 😀

I thought it resembles the flesh, The gardner episode
I feel like in Protocol they're doing more cross entity episodes? Like this one is corruption and flesh and spiral touched but I think maybe this time they're wanting to make it more clear that the fears bleed into each other rather than stay stagnant? If that makes sense
@@shoam8255 yea i do feel like the fears in tmgp are much more blended than tma, so it's fun to keep guessing.

I think either the fears are in a more primal state similar to how it was before we categorized them, or there more copaprative than in archive.
My current theory is that it's not fears this times but desires
*spoiler*
The first episode she had the desire to see the guy again, in the second she had the desire to change herself, and in this one he had the desire to have somewhere to hide and be safe. Maybe that's why they seem muddy and not strictly fitting to the fears we know.
Desire for the ones lost, Desire for knowledge (the explorer), desire to change, and the desire to be hidden. smirke MK2?

And now . . .

Desire to . . . I’m not sure exactly how to phrase it but desire to play music perfectly, not really a simply phrased desire, but a desire nonetheless
@Archiv1st exactly my thoughts! My theory is still kinda fitting so far! I'm so pumped to have more magnus content to theory craft about!

The Freddy system is definitely an Extinction aspect
This gave me Over the Garden Wall flashbacks. Amazing episode!
Another ambiguous episode, the trend continues. I wonder if this universe had someone like smrik, who attempted to try and categorize the fears. If not, maybe that’s why the fears seem so mixed up. We knew the categories didnt actually matter, but maybe the act of categorizing them in TMA actually effected they way they worked? By assuming the fears worked one way, maybe that pushed them into “acting” like how people/avatars believed they would
It will be interesting to see how thing go moving forward
My own personal thing is that it's kind of the opposite of TMA, instead of avatars being avatars of the whole portion of the fears they are now avatars of the space in-between where they bleed together
Idk if that explains it well but yk
@@ThatOneArchivist That makes sense, it should be interesting to see how the plot progresses

I love Colin’s voice, his Scottish accent is perfect for IT shenanigans
21:01 “better than being force-fed my own keyboard…”
It was quite interesting how the viewpoint shifted to a fear-monster. And then it seemed almost to take on tones of Fear itself reveling in finally being incarnated and free. Which makes it so interesting that it was far more concerned with enjoying the sunlight while not even understanding why the victim was scared ... almost to the point of understanding the victim's fear as a bad thing

Edit: My thoughts on what could explain his sudden change in psyche: the roots managed to reach his brain, nullifying his thoughts of anxiety to replace them with bliss. We saw that the infection was beginning to affect his sense of taste, so it was definitely close to reaching that particular area. Alternatively the roots could've taken over his nervous system and replaced his pain with pleasure, seeing as he begins to change mentally once he reports the sudden lack of pain in his body.

Firstly, Colin is probably going to end up in a fight with a computer one day that he can't possibly win, and it shall be a morbid joy to listen to!
Also, the tale - combined to the previous one - seems to involve change and reactions to it. Whilst episode 2 dealt with change as constant and never satisfactory, this episode seems to look at change as a natural acceptance. There is a lot of metamorphosis going on.
12 castle hill ave.... Noted
alright, here're my theories so far, plus a handful of other ones I've heard that i liked:
*absolutely believe the text to speech is just john and martin, and that "augustus" is probably elias. personally im thinking the situation is more ghost-core than trapped-in-the-computer-core. also someone said .jmj could be john-martin-jonah which i think would be very unsubtle, but i dont know if .jmj errors are even a real thing
*maybe their arc will involve them being freed/freeing themselves and we can get some ghost john and martin content?
*i think gwen bouchard is elias' daughter from before his body was taken by jonah, and that shes not there for evil stuff. however, i do think shes there for suspicious stuff, and/or was drawn there (compelled perhaps). maybe she's looking for her long lost dad?
*a number of people think the fears feel blended together, more-so now than before, and i really like that, especially with the imagery we've been getting
*someone said the fears could be more primal and less defined than they were before, either because they failed, or for another reason ill get to shortly
*someone said colin might be a vegetarian because of flesh-related trauma and i just like that (sorry colin)
*i hadn't even considered this, but someone suggested this could be the alternate dimension that the fears ended up in, and that john, martin, and jonah were sucked through too. i think this is even more of a stretch and probably easy to disprove, but very fun to think about
*the same person suggested that this could be why the fears seem primal and undefined, because they're like infants in a new universe
anyway, thats all i have for the moment. feel free to leave your thoughts and opinions!

She’s awesome
@malaizze that's my hope! I get the vibe that despite being the office prankster that she'll be the one to really step up when shit inevitably hits the fan.
Maybe it's the autism but,,,
I haven't picked up on her being mean spirited? I'm not inclined to completely trust my judgement on that one though 😂
@drinkerofpaint For me, what I considered a bit mean was in the last episode, having Sam introduce himself to Colin by asking a question she knew would set Colin off on a rant. Then in this episode Alice brought up the idea of calling IT but Colin vehemently disagreed so Alice instead asks Sam to do it instead, knowing that it could lead to Colin getting pissed off and potentially at Sam, as he points out. Then also badgering Gwen to tell them her plans despite not wanting to and Alice chose to withhold information Gwen needed to know until Alice got her gossip.
Nothing about it is malevolent really, but dang I wouldn't be thrilled about having a coworker like Alice if she does that *all* the time. She's still really funny and lord knows I love people that answer cosmic horror with sass.
I really love how complex she is! Like she’s the only one with a sense of humour but also shows intelligence, doubt and seriousness. Almost like she knows something but still debating it and doesn’t wanna lose her happiness over a stupid job
Mild spoiler for this episode, major spoiler for the end of The Magnus Archives, and some theorizing for the rest of this series:
1:40 - Did anyone else automatically think of "Jonathan, Martin, Jonah" at the reference to a .JMJ error? I know Jonah should be dead, but I'm having a hard time thinking of a different "J" person. Of course, this is presumably an alternate reality, so maybe this is an alternate version of him? I'm assuming that maybe John and Martin are the ones from the original magnus archives reality and that they were fused with Freddie when they entered this reality. I could be making wildly incorrect guesses, though.
It seems that the third voice, “Augustus,” is Jonah. Since he was at the top of the Panopticon Tower when the rift opened he probably got pulled through too despite being dead.

If anything it reminds me of Nurgle from 40K.
It's honestly not clear what happened, probably intentional since unlike the Archives crew, the OIAR don't bother digging any further than necessary. From what it sounds like, Maddie was killed by her husband because she had a lover, but his crime wasn't discovered until later.
@@Speckaboo Got it, thanks, now I see it too!
Each new episode keeps getting better than the last. ❤ I dont know of any other podasts than Magnus that an be both so beautiful and relaxing and also completely terrorfying. I love it.
New episode let’s gooooo!
2:20 That "of course not" is giving horrible Nikola Orsinov vibes and I'm here for it
Is this Jared Hopworths garden??😊
Please let colin say everything ever, I love his voice and accent
Not me vagueing out for a second only to come back and hearing the words "take out my philangies and sticking them into the ground"
Okay so theory time. I think the system is the melding of Jonathon, Martin and Jonha. There is a clear time gap here cuz in the first episode they said the Magnus Archives burned down 20 years ago. So we are in the other universe and all the horrors are running free.
I feel like I'm noticing a pattern I'd love for other imput on. Each episode so far has had my friend and I suggest different entities that are at play and I'm not sure that's an accident. While the majority of the episode was clearly infestation, there was an incredibly strong lonely twist to each part of it. Almost like a subcategory (note how the computer system has a main and sub classification). I feel like that's an intentional pattern. Thoughts?
Also to note there are other strong entity suggestions in other comments which I feel only further cements my theory. Of course it could be a red herring but still, I'd love for some discussion
I mean, most Corruption victams/avatars were lonely (and toxic, as they called Jane) to begin with. After all, why would you want to be consumed by mold or bugs if you're not absolutely *desperate* for companionship?
I know the guy didn't necessarily want the planes, he wanted Maddie. But still, y'know? The Corruption needs loneliness in order to be more effective, maybe? Idk, guess we'll only know by seeing more.
I think that the fears are much more intertwined in this universe and they'll need a whole new classification system for them! I'm writing down all the fears I'm suspecting in each statement and it's usually not just one so they must be less defined here for sure
@gabrielluz5110 see that's a very good observation and I definitely would agree if not for the previous episodes. The last episode had very strong feeling of the spiral (the mental issues and body hate on an artist) and the flesh (the rest of the story). The first one had some end/lonely/buried vibes (the zombie one) and the eye story had a setting normally in a buried story. But that's more just some theorizing
@wywrd_mtnt ooo I like that. Personally I have noticed that it feels like one fear is kinda acting like a delivery method to another (not as prevalent in this one as the last but I noticed in ep 2 that it felt like a prime spiral set up with a mentally unstable artist but halfway through it was like the spiral directly led to the flesh). That's where I am seeing the connection to the category-subcategory system.
“at least I’m not the one on all fours” OK DAM GIRL NO SHAMING HERE!!
If someone said that to me as I was fixing something for them crouching under their dumb desk, somebody WOULD have died down there for sure!
No way new episode‼️‼️‼️
.jmj error you say...Sounds suspiciously like the initials of 3 particular names, no?
When do they mention the jmj error?

oh hurrah, fungus body horror. my favorite.
Yup, still hate the Corruption. *Shudders*
But doesn't it call the bugs parasites idk it just feels off like it's the corruption but different somehow
@@lucassevey5989The Corruption isn't just a bug thing. Polyps fall under the umbrella of disease and the way he initially described the growth of them is reminiscent of mold or fungal spores spreading their roots. Of course, new world, new evils, so we're not necessarily categorizing solely by The 14/15 anymore, but I wouldn't know what else to categorize this by. They have felt a bit more like apocalypse statements that have less discreet categories though. 🤔
