Gertrude really went "I'm not trapped in this world with all these horrors, these horrors are trapped here with ME" 50 years of being the biggest menace anyone has ever seen.
I often like to think about how if the eye represents the audience, the web represents the narrative itself. lacking free will, unknowingly being doomed to run the course of a scheme much bigger than you... that's pretty much the situation all fictional characters are unknowingly trapped in Edit: I just watched this person's video on the web and saw that they said a similar thing, that the web can represent the author. I do think that that version is a very nifty take. I unfortunately cannot form any eloquent thoughts right now except _hmmmmmm...!!_
Yeah! I mean while listening for the longest time I thought it’d be revealed that we were the eye. Since we’re listening to every tape that gets recorded.
I see the first Watcher’s Crown ritual as a half successful ritual and the eyepocalypse as the fully successful Watcher’s Crown. Like, it literally *crowned* the ceaseless watcher as the sovereign of all reality. The first time Jonah wore the Watcher’s crown, the second time the crown belonged to the watcher
Look I'm just saying that if the Eye made me an avatar but it also gave me a research grant for anything I wanted to research and learn. I'm not going to complain
I think either The Stranger or The Lonely would be worth looking at next, have the series ordered from the biggest entity in the series to the least mentioned (the extinction)
This is sort of what I was planning to do anyways. While I won't outline everything that I'll be doing, the next couple I have planned are the Web, Lonely, and Stranger, as that's about the order of importance I feel they hold in the story (I put the Web higher both because it has so many ties to our protagonist, the primary companion/romantic interest, the metaplot, and basically everything else)
@@FinalFantasmagoriehindsight-wise I find it interesting that you seemed to rank spiral as just below corruption in terms of narrative importance, I haven’t finished this video series as of now yet but I can’t wait to get to those two
@@DG_Toti The Lonely, Stranger, Hunt, and Corruption all have their places because of how they act as driving factors of their respective seasons. But, yeah, it was shockingly hard to figure out where to place each of the Entities in the middle.
I think it might also be worth it to correlate it to our world. How eyes function on a literary or cultural level and how the series takes advantage of that. Also the idea that the eye, despite knowing everything, doesn't understand the knowledge it has and can't make connections or inferences on its own. Essentially a weaknesses section? Going from that, a strength section might also be good. The eye seems to be quite effective against the Desolation, the Dark and perhaps even the Lonely is especially susceptible to it since you can't be alone if you feel like you're being watched. I just really love that depending on your perspective, you can make an argument for each entity being a hard counter to another and you'd be right either way. It's incredible. Great video by the way!
Well I the eye plus the lonely thing can be 50/50 Like for celebrities or famous people you can feel loneliness and isolation BECAUSE you are known and watched But also other people could feel comfort and belonging from being known and seen so I feel like the lonely and eye are a perfect paring but also the perfect opposites
@@hauntedhoody2976Probably because the eye can see the destroyed, meaning that desolation can’t fully destroy something to where it’s forgotten or unseen. When my phone exploded and I was terrified I lost a year’s worth of photos, files, and concepts/stories I wrote, that fear and pain was the desolation. But if the eye was involved I would be able to get those things back and not be worried, therefore negating the desolation.
Eye is one of those fears that at the same time compels me and scares me. Knowledge and need to know? I am nerd i can easily see poking my nose where it's not wanted as my undoing . Secrets revealed and lack of privacy disturbs my to my core. I am not paranoid person but could see myself becoming one under constant feeling of being watched. All in all i think due to that blend of scary and compelling its perfect candidate to make avatar out of me, as I always felt(even with evidence to contrary) that you should be both scared but also compelled by the fear to become avatar of it, witch in my humble opinion is much, much harder than simply being afraid, or liking what your patron represents.
I am endlessly fascinted by this dreaded power in particular, partly because the meta thing you mentioned in the video about how we as the audience are the Eye itself, the Ceasless Watcher, but also because I have a real legit phobia of eyes. Not scocophobia, the fear of being watched. Just eyes. And yet, I'm obsessed with them. Definitly not a warning sign. XD Jokes aside, I love this video, looking forward for the rest of this series.
In the fears allied with the eye section you seem to forget both the end and the spiral. The spiral in the form of the distortion, wich saved Jonathan up untill he went against the eye and the end wich send an avatar to help wake Jonathan up and achieve full avatar hood.
Yeah, absolutely. This was earlier in the series, so I was still a bit nebulous about what "connections" actually meant. I'll definitely bring this up in the future (with crediting of course!)
im excited for this series. I absolutely am terrified of the eye. Just the concept of having my secrets ripped from me is petrifying for me. My privacy is very important to me. Its genuinly interesting to me how far the concept of being watched could be taken. Good job on rusty quill and good job to you for an amazing analyses. Bravo!!
So, if i get it correctly Jhona's and Jon's powers are oposit to each other . While Mr Magnus can torture you with the memories of your trauma by giving you more information about it, Jon has magic therapy which makes the vicrim tell everything ABOUT said trauma
"...where a plastic clown aggressively moisturised him while he was on the run for murder and dealing with a crazy door demon." People without context: Excuse me what the actual!?- People with context: Trust me Bro. I didn't get it either but it's funny as hell. (Not for Jon though)
So if the eye shaped rock cause cameras to be distorted and disrupted in relation to it doesn't that means that The Eye has some connection to the broken camra which prevents The Fears from focusing on the person who has the camera and everyone in their near vicinity?
I just finished season 1 but… now I really WANT spoilers because I’m way to into it and I triggered myself really bad because I have delusions surrounded with worms, so… yeah here I am preparing myself before I go into the rest of it.
Okay but John is the best archivist? He ended the world! He fulfilled the purpose of the archivist position! No one else could have done it! Gertrude was a terrible archivist; she didn't even like taking statements!
I'm not really sure, but, honestly, that would make a lot of sense! I could also see it being associated with the Dark, for its ability to hide, or the Web, since it's associated with Annabelle Cane, but having it be protected from the Eye BECAUSE it's aligned with the Eye is a really fascinating interpretation!
@@FinalFantasmagorie yes, especially the connection to the fear of your safe haven falling apart. It reminded me of the stated eye connection with having your secrets exposed
so basically the eye is an autistic adhder with nothing better to do than to just sit around all day and listen to a bunch of silly little tapes because FEAR
The audience is not The Eye because none of this is real and therefore no one is actually being victimized or even disrespected. If it's a deliberare parallel then that would be a shame, as it's not a very well-considered one
I believe they mention the connection between the Eye and the audience in one of the Q&A's, if I'm not mistaken, but I think that's a fair point. The audience is getting enjoyment from suffering, but the fictional nature of said suffering makes it less reprehensible than the actions of the Eye in story. I definitely still think it's fair to say that the two parallel one another, but they're certainly not equivalent.
@@FinalFantasmagorie There is, however, a potentially very good Statement themed around true crime to be mined out of that I think. I know we had the murder club but nevertheless
the eye is the director but the web is the executive producer
I thought the Web would be the cinematographer.
The eye watches the stories... the Web Tells them.

Gertrude was such a legend
She is the character I fell in love with. No non sense and just ruthless against the fears
Actual girlboss
Gertrude is the Doomguy of TMA. The only thing they feared was her. And now Jon, of course.
The commentary about how the eye is a stand in for the audience is something not talked about nearly enough. Awesome video!

The Eye is one that I find very interesting, but also one of the fears that I think I fear most in real life, the other probably being the stranger.
the character section made me chuckle, if you haven't listened to tma it sounds so bonkers - while all the descriptions are 100% correct
As I understand Jonah's power, he can perceive out of any eye, real or symbolic
You underestimate my ability to listen to Magnus Archives lore for 3 hours
