    The purpose of the catalytic converter is not to reduce carbon DIoxide (CO2). In fact if the catalytic converter works, the compounds that it is intended to reduce (mainly carbon MONoxide and hydrocarbons are converted to carbon dioxide, so this gas actually increases in the exhaust.

    Be careful who replaces the part. My catalytic converter was stolen off an 2005 Tundra happens to have 2 Took it to BIG O TIRE shop in Bakersfield Ca they sublet the work to BOBS Mufflers picked up my truck when it was ready they forgot invoice from BOBS in my truck for $1800.00. Big O Tire charged me $4800.00 File complaint with BAR they investigated the only thing they did wrong was not disclosing the job was being sublet to BOBS. I've learned how to do repairs myself, i have done wheel bearings, control arms, brake pads, rotors, water pumps, alternators, etc. etc.
      I can do a brake job (pads and rotors) on a car in around an hour now. I even learned how to do wheel alignments using 2 cinder blocks, a tape measure, and some string.
      Its really not that hard, I just watch a couple of you-tube videos, and buy my parts off Amazon or E-bay.
      Shop labor prices are ridiculous, and finding an actual honest mechanic is like trying to find a unicorn nowadays.

    Hey, 8020 Media. I currently drive a 2000 Subaru Outback wagon with the 2.5L H4 engine in it. I have been having issues since I bought in may with acceleration. About Mid July it sounded like some one stuck a kazoo in my tail pipe. It rattled and made weird sounds and went tink and then started rattling. So, I put a north east exhaust stainless steel glass pack on. Car worked great for two to three weeks since I got it stuck on. The noises and rev hang went away. When I was driving it home from work last night. The car started to chirp and make noises and whistle with acceleration. Once it warmed up, the vehicle shut up and got quiet. Tonight, we had a hell of a rain storm I saw nothing like it at all. I drove through standing water, it was probably four inches deep. I hit the puddle at 25MPH, the car did fine but it bogged down on me. So, after it bogged down I kept the gas pedal mashed so I can keep my RPMS up to keep water out. Then I smelled rotten eggs on the way home after I got out of the puddle. Other then that, car works excellent and no major issues with it. Considering it has 214,000 miles on it. Thanks for the video- WS.

    The easiest test for a bad cat is get a infrared temp gun and get the vehicle up to operating temperature and check the temp going into cat and temp going out of cat depending on what readings you get that will tell if the cat is working properly or on its way out or completely toast! Deff take to another mechanic and get another opinion the sounds a bad trans makes are way different from the sounds a bad cat makes the stalling and not going over 40 certainly sounds like your cat I had this issue on my impala except my got so bad that I couldn’t accelerate past 20! So sounds like she could get away with maybe running a bottle of cataclean in the gas tank and see ir that helps clean out the cat at all then if that doesn’t work I’d take to another shop they shouldn’t charge you more then about 500-600 for a cat replacement on that model car

    Will your VSA light and Check engine light go on when the catalytic converter is clogged

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  19 дней назад

      L - Yes, a clogged catalytic converter can cause both the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) light and the Check Engine Light (CEL) to turn on. A clogged converter creates excessive backpressure, which can lead to poor engine performance and trigger CEL codes like P0420 (catalyst efficiency below threshold) or codes for misfires and oxygen sensor issues. The VSA light may activate because the system detects reduced engine performance or irregular signals from sensors tied to engine operation. Address the catalytic converter issue promptly, as driving with a clogged converter can damage the engine and exhaust system.

Symptoms all point to clogged catalytic converter. Will it throw that code (p2109) as well not the usual p0420 or O2 sensor code. ‘17 VW GTI, DSG
    Been chasing issues for the last few months. Replaced suction jet pump, charcoal can, evap purge valve, PCV unit. Brand new plugs just two days ago and I’ve been exhibiting a lot of the symptoms of a clogged cat. My issue is my pre cat o2 sensor has been throwing a low voltage code forever and I get no readings from the post cat sensor in OBD11. In live data, I could see the pre cat exhaust temperature reading 80-90 degrees Celsius above what the post cat temperature was reading. I also have very weak flow coming from the tailpipes and have smelled a sulfur/nasty smell a few times over the last few weeks. I also noticed a smell when pulling the coil packs out of the cylinder head, as well as finding some oil around the washer rings of cylinder 2’s spark plug.

      @@OHNOES131 try cleaning the cats, some cars have 2, find the best way to do so, your rings may wear soon if you dont, the blocked pressure from the exhaust by the cat can lead to particles getting into the piston chambers and wear your rings.
      Cats are total fuckery, when they are getting too hot the vehicle sometimes shut off or just lose power, the readings by the o2 sensor does this, nothing is wrong with your o2 sensor.
      Just take this as gospel truth clean the cats properly car will be fine, lets hope the rings arent damaged

    • @OHNOES131
      @OHNOES131 2 месяца назад

      @ hopefully the rings are good. I’ve actually since this post installed a CTS turbo Dp with the hi flow cat on it, but still having some issues. With light driving the car drives fine, but when I give it good throttle, it chokes up. Also on warm start, it has a bit of a rough start as well. I’m gonna do a carbon cleaning as I’m at 101k and I don’t believe any of the previous owners ever had this done. Also I was running with a faulty PCV unit, and turns out the blow by gasses and hydrocarbons can recycle back through the intake manifold and gunk everything up. If the carbon cleaning doesn’t do the trick, next step is injectors. But after monitoring injector timing, nothing seems out of ordinary. No short term fuel trim either, just sporadic misfires not specific to any cylinder. For instance, last time driving and giving it throttle to pass another car, OBD 11counted 30 misfires on cyl 3 and 8 on cyl 1. Plugs are brand new and all gapped to tune spec, coils are only a year old.

Today Nov 11 I could hear a beating or popping sound and when I pulled into a parking lot I turned the engine off and back on and the popping shaking of the exhaust & tail pipe was gone from turning the key off . I have noticed a loss of power when trying to acccelerate . S - Yes, a bad catalytic converter can cause a rattling noise, especially if the ceramic honeycomb inside has broken apart due to age, overheating, or impact damage. The rattling is typically most noticeable at idle or during acceleration when exhaust flow increases. If the converter is partially clogged, you may also experience loss of power, poor acceleration, increased exhaust backpressure, and even a check engine light (P0420 or similar codes).

    I have a 2005 Civic with a 1.7 L engine. I had the rotten egg smell a while back and I also had a battery with a dead cell. It would still start my car but it would not shift right and my mechanic also said it affected how my cat worked. I had my 2019 GMC Sierra worked on by GMC. a lifter was bad causing a ticking noise. They replaced the lifter and a bent push rod. All 8 lifters were replaced and pushrods. I drove it about 20 miles and check engine light came on. Took it back to GMC they said its a bad Cat on bank 2 (same side the initial lifter was bad). is this just a coincidence or could they have done something by mistake

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  8 месяцев назад

      Definitely seems suspect but I don't think a lifter replacement would create any issues with the cat. It could also just be bad O2 sensor and not the cat itself - I wouldn't go paying for an expensive new cat without confirming the cat is clogged or going bad first..

    I have a 2015 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L engine, and it has 240k miles on the engine, I had the engine and transmission tested theyre fine, and I replaced the spark plugs, coil packs, throttle body. Accelerating is very slow. It takes a second for the car to get up to speed. I suspect it's the catalytic converter. It's expensive on this vehicle. It's has no codes, and there is a smell that comes from the exhaust. Do you suspect it's the catalytic converter? One thing about some of t diy projects for cleaning out the cat that I have noticed is going to be a killer. Some people have tried using a strong kind of chemical or caustic solution, which is a good thing for a dirty motor but is an electrolyte in a cat converter. They use different rare earth metals that will electroplate another. The End. Use something that won't do that.

      No. It only indicates that the sensor output suggests cat efficiency has dropped below 95%. It has no way of knowing why. There are eight or ten reasons why the downstream sensor might throw a P0420 code; only one reason might be a failed cat. And a 'clogged' cat is not the same thing. That results in seriously impaired car performance, noticeable to any driver.
