‘17 VW GTI, DSG Been chasing issues for the last few months. Replaced suction jet pump, charcoal can, evap purge valve, PCV unit. Brand new plugs just two days ago and I’ve been exhibiting a lot of the symptoms of a clogged cat. My issue is my pre cat o2 sensor has been throwing a low voltage code forever and I get no readings from the post cat sensor in OBD11. In live data, I could see the pre cat exhaust temperature reading 80-90 degrees Celsius above what the post cat temperature was reading. I also have very weak flow coming from the tailpipes and have smelled a sulfur/nasty smell a few times over the last few weeks. I also noticed a smell when pulling the coil packs out of the cylinder head, as well as finding some oil around the washer rings of cylinder 2’s spark plug.

@ hopefully the rings are good. I’ve actually since this post installed a CTS turbo Dp with the hi flow cat on it, but still having some issues. With light driving the car drives fine, but when I give it good throttle, it chokes up. Also on warm start, it has a bit of a rough start as well. I’m gonna do a carbon cleaning as I’m at 101k and I don’t believe any of the previous owners ever had this done. Also I was running with a faulty PCV unit, and turns out the blow by gasses and hydrocarbons can recycle back through the intake manifold and gunk everything up. If the carbon cleaning doesn’t do the trick, next step is injectors. But after monitoring injector timing, nothing seems out of ordinary. No short term fuel trim either, just sporadic misfires not specific to any cylinder. For instance, last time driving and giving it throttle to pass another car, OBD 11counted 30 misfires on cyl 3 and 8 on cyl 1. Plugs are brand new and all gapped to tune spec, coils are only a year old.

Straight pipe it 😂😂 you don’t need em per say if you don’t care about the environment but I do understand depending on what state you have inspections and have to have them but if you don’t just straight pipe it
S - Yes, a bad catalytic converter can cause a rattling noise, especially if the ceramic honeycomb inside has broken apart due to age, overheating, or impact damage. The rattling is typically most noticeable at idle or during acceleration when exhaust flow increases. If the converter is partially clogged, you may also experience loss of power, poor acceleration, increased exhaust backpressure, and even a check engine light (P0420 or similar codes).
Would a hot, warmer than usual floorboard (driver and passenger) be a symptom of a bad/ clogged catalytic converter? Or, would it be a heat shield issue? Thanks

I have a 2014 Sonata. I know all about the junk motors cause mine is junk. With all the same symptoms of a clogged cat...could this possibly be the issue? When it misfires, I hear the lifters clicking and burnt oil blows out the exhaust?
Well...I just bought an 08 Prius from a dealer in SC. 3 days after I got the car the check engine light came on...after maybe 100 miles. The car seems to run fine. No misfires or trouble accelerating. Had the code checked at Advance Auto and OReilly and they say it is the cat converter. I think the dealer re-set the check engine and since it is as is he stuck it on me! However it still runs the same as before the light came on. Oil looks good and the coolant looks fine...no dark fumes from the tail pipe...I don't know. Thinking on just driving it and see what happens next!
@8020Media yes I was getting a check engine light. But so I was watching these yt videos and so I went with the direction and used that cataclean stuff. I poured the whole bottle, rode around for about 30 minutes. And I didn't fill up on gas until yesterday morning, whichwas the morning after i poured the clean in. I had my 2019 GMC Sierra worked on by GMC. a lifter was bad causing a ticking noise. They replaced the lifter and a bent push rod. All 8 lifters were replaced and pushrods. I drove it about 20 miles and check engine light came on. Took it back to GMC they said its a bad Cat on bank 2 (same side the initial lifter was bad). is this just a coincidence or could they have done something by mistake
Definitely seems suspect but I don't think a lifter replacement would create any issues with the cat. It could also just be bad O2 sensor and not the cat itself - I wouldn't go paying for an expensive new cat without confirming the cat is clogged or going bad first..
Ive had good success spraying an entire can of carb cleaner into the exhaust before the CATS with the engine running (I drilled a small hole before each of my 2 cats, sealed later w screws). Seems to really clear out blockage! Big jump in performance. I did this again recently after dealing w a LEAN condition from loose/worn oil filler cap and torn, leaking grommet seal on the oil filler tube.
I changed the downstream O2 sensor and it triggered the CAT code. I did the upstream, erased the codes and it came back on. There was stalling while driving and weak acceleration.

I have a 2015 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L engine, and it has 240k miles on the engine, I had the engine and transmission tested theyre fine, and I replaced the spark plugs, coil packs, throttle body. Accelerating is very slow. It takes a second for the car to get up to speed. I suspect it's the catalytic converter. It's expensive on this vehicle. It's has no codes, and there is a smell that comes from the exhaust. Do you suspect it's the catalytic converter? I change the oil every 3k with full synthetic, and transmission fluid has been serviced regularly. I love this car, and it is a trooper. Most 4 cylinder vehicles dont make it past 200k, and I want to keep this car going. Suggestions?

I am not exhibiting any signs of a bad cat other than the temperature before the cat is hotter than after the cat. No power loss, o2 sensors seem to be working fine, I don't think I have any exhaust leak. Recently replaced cats but P0420 and 0430 came back. Any idea what else I should check for?
I been driving my G37 and when I hit the gas pedal to the metal, there is a nasty smell but it doesn't smell like burned fuel. It's a different kind of smell and I only notice it when I step on the gas pedal kinda hard. Do you think it's because of my cats going bad?
One thing about some of t diy projects for cleaning out the cat that I have noticed is going to be a killer. Some people have tried using a strong kind of chemical or caustic solution, which is a good thing for a dirty motor but is an electrolyte in a cat converter. They use different rare earth metals that will electroplate another. The End. Use something that won't do that.
I special ordered a catalytic converter from Napa Auto parts to replace the catalytic converter a month later my catalytic converter light still came back on. So now what?
No. It only indicates that the sensor output suggests cat efficiency has dropped below 95%. It has no way of knowing why. There are eight or ten reasons why the downstream sensor might throw a P0420 code; only one reason might be a failed cat. And a 'clogged' cat is not the same thing. That results in seriously impaired car performance, noticeable to any driver.

I also have very weak flow coming from the tailpipes and have smelled a sulfur/nasty smell a few times over the last few weeks. I also noticed a smell when pulling the coil packs out of the cylinder head, as well as finding some oil around the washer rings of cylinder 2’s spark plug.
O - Sounds like a cat issue to us! Have you taken it to a mechanic?
@ I haven’t yet, but I’ve gotten a few opinions from a couple shops and they’re all leading to something with the cats. Got a single Hi-flow on the way to replace!
O - Keep us updated!
@@OHNOES131 try cleaning the cats, some cars have 2, find the best way to do so, your rings may wear soon if you dont, the blocked pressure from the exhaust by the cat can lead to particles getting into the piston chambers and wear your rings.
Cats are total fuckery, when they are getting too hot the vehicle sometimes shut off or just lose power, the readings by the o2 sensor does this, nothing is wrong with your o2 sensor.
Just take this as gospel truth clean the cats properly car will be fine, lets hope the rings arent damaged
What converter would you recommend because I buy this aftermarket sound like a motorcycle do you think would be better to buy an original converter? I got all those symptoms

Would a clogged converter cause valve clatter sound when the engine gets hot from the increased back pressure? It gets boggy and then I'll hear the valves when accelerating. I am getting a check engine light for a small fuel leak. Gas cap, purge valve or converter I think is what the code was. Code goes on and off.
F - Certainly possible. Try to get the code when the check engine light is on and check back. Hard to diagnose without a code
M driving ford focus 1.0 ecoboost i keep getting engine light n none of the above problems you mentioned is happening on my car but my mechanic told me that i need to find someone to fix Emmission problem
B - Do you happen to know what engine codes you are getting?
Hi , please help me figure out what is going on with my Nissan '90 D21. A couple months ago I started noticing an intermittent sound coming from under my truck . Sounds like there is some sort of obstruction in the exhaust system . Like some airway is being partially blocked . When another car pulls up along side of me the sound is returned to me driving along when it bounces back . Today Nov 11 I could hear a beating or popping sound and when I pulled into a parking lot I turned the engine off and back on and the popping shaking of the exhaust & tail pipe was gone from turning the key off . I have noticed a loss of power when trying to acccelerate . I just spent $709 for a diagnosis and they replaced the Intake Manifold gasket , wherever that is , but the noise and exhaust problem did not go away at all . I am 78 year old woman who knows nothing about mechanics of my D21 and need all the help I can get .
B - Sorry to hear this! Are you getting a check engine light?
@@8020MediaNO, none at all , just a sound that seems to be coming from under truck like an airway is congested , obstructed . then whole exhaust is visibly shaking hard and popping sound coming from tail pipe . , then stops completely after I turn engine off then start up truck again . I have driven it for a full 30 years and this is new .
B - It definitely sounds like there could be something going on with the catalytic converter. Keep us updated!
San jose California hoping you are near by so I can help whatever I can.
I have a 2016 Hyundai Tucson and it was drinking to much oil. Engine had to be replaced. Two days later engine light came on and I was told its the catalytic converter. Probably from the bad engine that damage the cat. I tried Cataclean and engine light turned off for a couple of days but turn back on. It runs fine and has a lot of power. I can't afford 3500 to get my catalytic converter replace. I trying to find an affordable place but some mechanics are scandalous. I dont know what to do. Can you give me some tips on what I should do?
Straight pipe it 😂😂 you don’t need em per say if you don’t care about the environment but I do understand depending on what state you have inspections and have to have them but if you don’t just straight pipe it
Would a bad cat make a rattling noise ?
S - Yes, a bad catalytic converter can cause a rattling noise, especially if the ceramic honeycomb inside has broken apart due to age, overheating, or impact damage. The rattling is typically most noticeable at idle or during acceleration when exhaust flow increases. If the converter is partially clogged, you may also experience loss of power, poor acceleration, increased exhaust backpressure, and even a check engine light (P0420 or similar codes).
@ would you recommend me replacing the cats or hallowing it out
Would a hot, warmer than usual floorboard (driver and passenger) be a symptom of a bad/ clogged catalytic converter? Or, would it be a heat shield issue? Thanks
F - It more than likely is heat shield related.
Can adding a cold air intake for 6 months, then putting back in the stock intake cause any of these issues?
My check engine light is on, auto zone reader says catalytic converter.
L - Not likely.
U forget to plug everything into intake
I have a 2014 Sonata. I know all about the junk motors cause mine is junk. With all the same symptoms of a clogged cat...could this possibly be the issue? When it misfires, I hear the lifters clicking and burnt oil blows out the exhaust?
F - Certainly could be! Any engine codes?
@@8020MediaInitially, but the mechanic that works for the place I bought it, cleared it. It's no longer coming on
F - Well that's good! Hopefully it stays off.
F - Sorry to hear this.. Did you get a warranty?
I love watching these vids at 2X playback speed. Good info!
A - Thanks for the feedback.
My engine was running and my gas pedal went all the way down but no acceleration. Auto zone said possibly cat conv. Can anyone help?
S - Are you getting a check engine light?
@8020Media yes I was getting a check engine light. But so I was watching these yt videos and so I went with the direction and used that cataclean stuff. I poured the whole bottle, rode around for about 30 minutes. And I didn't fill up on gas until yesterday morning, whichwas the morning after i poured the clean in. And let me tell you, that check engine light went off as soon as I filled up on gas. Literally. In doing so, now my jeep ride smoother, my key start works now and now i have no dash lights on.
S - Awesome! Glad to hear your solved the problem.

1990 car with stock cats should I replace ?
I - You should check them beforehand, if possible. Typically they aren't cheap. Are you having any issues? or just suspecting they are bad?
@@8020Media I was smelling like a sulfur smell when my exhaust was on I pulled the pipes, and then I sunk the cats in laundry detergent and then clean them with brake parts cleaner. Afterwards I put a leaf blower on the pipe air was flowing right through them.

I have a 2005 Civic with a 1.7 L engine. I had the rotten egg smell a while back and I also had a battery with a dead cell. It would still start my car but it would not shift right and my mechanic also said it affected how my cat worked. I am still concerned about the catalytic converter I did put some stuff in there to get it unclogged but I was just wondering if removing the O2 sensor on my Civic would help?
J - Not likely, sounds like you may want to check on your cat. Are you getting any engine codes?
Hi Jake, nice explanation on the catalytic converter. Regarding the car's performance if the Catalytic Converter is bad, can one of the symptoms be that the car shuts down while driving if the AC is turned on?
L - A catalytic converter can cause a car to shut down when it overheats. However, what you are describing points us to the alternator: ruclips.net/video/HKP1vKsIr4g/видео.html

M - Were you told to do so because of an engine code?
Help,When I start my jeep Wrangler, it was very loud, but it’s also loud while I’m driving. I’m thinking it’s the O2 sensor or the catalytic converter.
T - Could be. Are you getting a check engine light?
Thanks ❤, my car is currently in the shop and i already suspected this issue, took it to my main mechanic first after the engine light came on,then he showed me the code of the catalytic,so since i got the work done at another shop,i drove my behind straight to them and let them know...we shall see if they try and tack on more stuff LOL😅🙄🙆🏾♀️
T - Hope they don't screw you over! Keep us updated.
Can using diesel oil in a gasoline, ran vehicle, cause your Cadillac converter to clog
D - It most certainly can damage the cats.
A - Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!
Is the catalytic converter can also cause the engine oil burning faster than usual?
P - It is possible.
I think you meant it is supposed to reduce carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases, not carbon dioxide.
S - yes, thanks.
I changed the downstream O2 sensor and it triggered the CAT code. I did the upstream, erased the codes and it came back on. There was stalling while driving and weak acceleration.
U - We have heard of this happening before unfortunately.. Are you getting any other engine codes?
@@8020Media still O2 sensor codes , evap, every code knows how to trigger for an oil change 😅

idk if u will reply to this but i got a p0305 clyinder 5 misfire and p0446 code, but auto zone recommended i replace the catalytic converter....when at idle it make louder buvv buvv buvv, noticably worse when i go into reverse or go very slow in drive, seems fine in neutral and park have very little vibration and loud buvv buvv buvv. any input would be appreciated friend. I use this truck for work and idk if i can afford a new cat.
T - Don't think you need to replace the cat. Seems like it could be your EVAP system. Check the purge valve and check your ignition components in cylinder 5.
What about the p0420 code???
T - This can lead to a catalytic converter, yes.
What about a loud start up and it sounds normal after a while

I just found out spark plug #3 is shot and #5 coils is bad later on I will change all my spark plugs and that one coil see what happens 🙏🏼🙏🏼
L - Thanks for the insight.
I special ordered a catalytic converter from Napa Auto parts to replace the catalytic converter a month later my catalytic converter light still came back on.
So now what?

Seafoam the part and new sensors
A - Doesn't always do the trick.
Ap0420 code is a clogged cat.
M - Not always, but most of the time, sure.
K - "Not always". But thanks for sharing the insight.
