  • Curious about the role of a catalytic converter in your vehicle's exhaust system? In today’s video, Jake dives deep into the world of catalytic converters, unraveling their function, common symptoms of failure, underlying causes, and effective fixes. Whether you're experiencing sluggish performance or suspect a catalytic converter issue, this comprehensive guide has you covered. The purpose of a catalytic converter in a vehicle's exhaust system is to reduce harmful emissions produced during the combustion process. Specifically, catalytic converters are designed to convert pollutants, such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), into less harmful substances, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor, through a series of chemical reactions.

    The purpose of the catalytic converter is not to reduce carbon DIoxide (CO2). In fact if the catalytic converter works, the compounds that it is intended to reduce (mainly carbon MONoxide and hydrocarbons are converted to carbon dioxide, so this gas actually increases in the exhaust.

    I have a 2016 Hyundai Tucson and it was drinking to much oil. Engine had to be replaced. Two days later engine light came on and I was told its the catalytic converter. Probably from the bad engine that damage the cat. I tried Cataclean and engine light turned off for a couple of days but turn back on. It runs fine and has a lot of power. I can't afford 3500 to get my catalytic converter replace. I trying to find an affordable place but some mechanics are scandalous. I dont know what to do. Can you give me some tips on what I should do?

    Hi Jake, nice explanation on the catalytic converter. Regarding the car's performance if the Catalytic Converter is bad, can one of the symptoms be that the car shuts down while driving if the AC is turned on?

    2013 Toyota Camry is throwing out a p2109 throttle body code. The symptoms are loss of power but gradually catches speed. Also burning oil more than usual. Symptoms all point to clogged catalytic converter. Will it throw that code (p2109) as well not the usual p0420 or O2 sensor code. Do you recommend changing throttle body first or Catalytic converter?

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  26 дней назад

      I would try cleaning the throttle body first and seeing if that does anything, but agreed that sounds a lot more like a cat.

    I had my 2019 GMC Sierra worked on by GMC. a lifter was bad causing a ticking noise. They replaced the lifter and a bent push rod. All 8 lifters were replaced and pushrods. I drove it about 20 miles and check engine light came on. Took it back to GMC they said its a bad Cat on bank 2 (same side the initial lifter was bad). is this just a coincidence or could they have done something by mistake

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  Месяц назад

      Definitely seems suspect but I don't think a lifter replacement would create any issues with the cat. It could also just be bad O2 sensor and not the cat itself - I wouldn't go paying for an expensive new cat without confirming the cat is clogged or going bad first..

    My granddaughter has 2015 Sentra that will not go over 40 and engine will die at stop sign. Advance Auto test said cat converter code showed up. She took to a mechanic who she didn’t know and they said transmission was bad. Any thoughts on next step for her?

    • @thatstonerr7738
      @thatstonerr7738 26 дней назад +1

      Deff take to another mechanic and get another opinion the sounds a bad trans makes are way different from the sounds a bad cat makes the stalling and not going over 40 certainly sounds like your cat I had this issue on my impala except my got so bad that I couldn’t accelerate past 20! So sounds like she could get away with maybe running a bottle of cataclean in the gas tank and see ir that helps clean out the cat at all then if that doesn’t work I’d take to another shop they shouldn’t charge you more then about 500-600 for a cat replacement on that model car

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  26 дней назад +3

      I'll echo what was said by thatstoner (lol). Try a different mechanic - it could be the transmission but that's very unlikely - a clogged cat would be much more likely

    I am not exhibiting any signs of a bad cat other than the temperature before the cat is hotter than after the cat. No power loss, o2 sensors seem to be working fine, I don't think I have any exhaust leak. Recently replaced cats but P0420 and 0430 came back. Any idea what else I should check for?

    I have a 2014 Sonata. I know all about the junk motors cause mine is junk. With all the same symptoms of a clogged cat...could this possibly be the issue? When it misfires, I hear the lifters clicking and burnt oil blows out the exhaust?

    Be careful who replaces the part. My catalytic converter was stolen off an 2005 Tundra happens to have 2 Took it to BIG O TIRE shop in Bakersfield Ca they sublet the work to BOBS Mufflers picked up my truck when it was ready they forgot invoice from BOBS in my truck for $1800.00. Big O Tire charged me $4800.00 File complaint with BAR they investigated the only thing they did wrong was not disclosing the job was being sublet to BOBS. I got stuck with the bill so dont take car to a shop that is not a MUFFLER SHOP. My friend did worst she was screwed by a smog shop $5400.00 to replace them on a JEEP.
