Abandoned Southern New Jersey - Cinematic Drone Flight over Ruins - Mavic Air 2

- Wanting to really add a new layer to my adventure videos, I picked up a Mavic Air 2, a drone by DJI, and took it out for a spin. I've never flown a drone before and this footage is from my first test flights. It's a relatively portable setup that I think shouldn't be difficult to bring on future expeditions.
This video was done as a test, but if it does well, I might do more standalone drone videos of abandoned locations.
These shots are invaluable documentation of beautiful small communities dotted throughout an even more beautiful and fragile ecosystem. Thank you for sharing this.

When i used to live in SoCal years ago,
I treated my wife to a long weekend aboard the Queen Mary for our 25th anniversary years ago.
It was truly an experience.
We walked the entire ship at 230am, i have a picture of my wife walking up the stairway outside the pool area with a fuzzy apparition following her.
So yes,
the Queen i think is haunted.
You should send beautiful video to the visitors center of NJ for them to use as a promotional video for the state of NJ...
I'm sure they'd love it.
I'm also now planning on getting a Mavic Air 2!!

South Jersey doesn't get the respect it deserves. We got a little of everything. Close to 2 major cities, farm lands, swamps, suburbs, ghettos, amazing beaches and everything else. Hope to see Atlantic City return to former glory.
The NJ Board of Tourism should pay you for this footage. Truly highlights the beauty of the state especially in South Jersey.

I lived in New Jersey for half my life. While you couldn't get me to move back there now, it's watching things like this that make me miss it.
Same! Grew up in S. Jersey and moved away 18 years ago to move out west. I don't want to go back to South NJ to live, but it was a wonderful place to grow up in the 80s. This video was very nostalgic.
Get rid of Jersey's governor...then it could be that great state again!
Same for me.....bought a house in NC.... Too many laws, taxes, anti everything and the Trenton Government sucks........ be well.

Just came across this video. Growing up on Rt 49 across from NJ Silica Sand that area was our summer time playground. Brings back great memories.

I so enjoyed this. This is the NJ I love. Lived here all my life; know many of the places (like East Point, Mauricetown, etc. Had no idea about many. I now want to see for myself. Thank you! And continue to explore and share please.

Simply Amazing Visuals....Well put together footage....The Jersey shore is my second home....pretty good cinematic moves for a first flight of the Air 2....I purchased mines in July and I'm definitely have it on my list to shoot some Jersey stuff...I definitely smashed that like button and subscribed....keep up the great work!!

All houses eventually become empty leaving not a rack behind. Excellent, had no idea so many s.j. relics still there. Usually hate bgm but this was a pleasant exception.

I would say that if that was your first excursion into drone piloting and you managed to keep her aloft and brought her to ground safely, you've got a very good beginning to continue in that direction.
At least a few people I know have bought expensive first drones only to get them back in pieces if at all

Thanks! This is my first drone ever, so I can't speak for any others in comparison. I was, however, planning to get the Mavic Mini, but I was convinced to go next level up by the amazing cinematic shots I was seeing on youtube.
Thank you for the concrete ship footage. It brought a boyhood memory back to me....My father and I were on the Cape May Lewes ferry and he pointed the Concrete Ship, out to me....

Its sad to see this stuff rot away thinking about the homes that once stood that had a family in them. And what it was like during those wondering who were they and knowing they arent here anymore its pretty upsetting.
You did an excellent job I've always wondered the story behind the Hazel Moore Ship by the East Point Lighthouse I stumbled upon it by accident years ago thank you keep doing what you do!!!
Absolutely amazing. It's hard finding great footage of the jersey shore and the pine barrens. You didn't show exactly where I grew up (i grew up in atlantic county, so not quite as south but close), but man it made me miss jersey and the shore. If you ever end up back there taking more drone footage, check out the edwin b forsythe reserve (if they allow drone footage, of course) and the weymouth and estell manor areas.

I love the old abandoned buildings. Back when I was riding the school bus, my driver Frank (probably in his 60's) drove a route that passed by his father's old gas station!
One day, he allowed me and a friend to look into one of the windows. The single gas pump had long since lost the front and back, leaving the innards exposed. It was pitch black in the old store. We couldn't go in, due to the floor being rotted out, but it was still nice of Frank.
There was also an abandoned school, but I don't really have any information on it unfortunately.
Oh man, if only those old walls could talk, think of all the history they would have to tell!

Breath taking footage. Imagine the cost of getting that with a helicopter. Helps put the technological progress into perspective. That said surprised NJ has banned or heavily find this kind of thing.
Wow, a great video. Sorry to find it so late. Excellent work for your first time using a drone - you must be a natural! I've been to most places in the video, but nice to see it from a different perspective. Will be going there a lot this Summer.
Interesting, beautiful short film you've made. Really appreciate all the time it took you to go to all these places and then do the editing.
One bit of feedback if you want it, is that most of the video is a little too dark. I'm in a dim room with a calibrated monitor and I had to stop after a few minutes to turn up the brightness. Otherwise it's beautiful.

My husband and I stumbled upon Bivalve and Shell Pile in the early 90s. The East Pt Lighthouse was all brick then. It's heartbreaking to see the towns in such disrepair. The schooner Clyde Phillips was in dry dock then and volunteers were restoring it. At least that work was completed and it's now the official state schooner.
That bunker in Cape May was in the water back in the 80s. There was a steep wooden bridge or stair case (I'm old enough to be forgetting details) to get to the top of it.
She was rechristened in 1995 to her former name, The A.J. Meerwald
Nicely filmed. That rain-cloud 1:44, & the freight trains at 1:24 were particularly good. Interesting to see the military fortifications built against the threat of the III Reich stretched as far across the ocean as this. It would be interesting to get inside Battery #223 to look around. Also looking at this one is reminded of how new in historical terms the USA is, & - to British eyes - how fragile much of its outlying rural townscapes appear with their transient wooden construct buildings. This still temporary condition that is America is quite interesting given its current politico-societal situation.
I’ve seen a few photos of the inside of the bunker; apparently it was stripped out and abandoned after the ‘62 nor’easter (it had been used for some sort of sonar station until then) and got about a foot of seagull droppings inside before being sealed with concrete blocks (for now).
There is a German sub that is on the bottom north and a little east of Barnegat Light.

My inlaws owned the point of east point nj about 300 yrd from that light house. He was a commercial eeler i spent many weekends down there. Even rented a house right on the front near the gettys 🤘❤️ they are buried in mauricetown cemetary
The ruins at the one minute mark are the silica sand plant ruins not Fries MIll. Fries Mill is up The Manumuskin at head of tide water and just beyons.Its position is plainly shown on the old topo maps. There are old cellar holes and chimneys there and the ruins of the actual mill,just foundations really. Oh and in spite of popular belief Mauricetown has never been abandoned. Nice Video
I attended 1st and 2nd grade in the old schoolhouse in Mauricetown (built back in the late 1700's I believe), 6th grade in the old firehouse. No, the town still stands, many of the old ship captain homes have been redone but it still exists, alive and well...except for the old bridge across the river itself. This was a grand place to grow up; hayrides in the autumn and caroling at Christmas...I look back fondly, yet so distant both in time and space.

Awesome video. Do you know where to find more info on the Hazel Moore? I did a quick search and couldn’t find anything. It would be cool to find a picture of the ship and learn the story.
It's been hard to find any real information on that ship, but I have found one photograph of it when it first came to rest there and was in pristine condition. I'd like to dive a bit more into the ship's history later and see what I can uncover, as well as do a walking tour video of the wreck site.

Perhaps, in around 100 years, most of this coast will be lost. Sea level rises will drown most low lying lands so documenting them now makes a lot of sense.

Cool video. Lots of interesting sites captured. I would not, however, consider The Cape May-Lewes Ferry, or the ruins of the Atlantus, the bunker or the Cape May Canal "abandoned Southern Jersey." The former is utilized by thousands of people and the latter are visited by many tourists each day.
Well yeah, the ferry and Mauricetown are sorta sprinkled in among the rest.
Is anything remaining of the old Egg Island (Point) Lighthouse? Or of the old House of Jacob/Church of the North Star in Bi-Valve/Port Norris area?
Mel Van It looks like there might be minor remains of the Egg Island light, but what an endeavor it would be to get out to it! May give it a shot though. As for the Church- if it’s the building I’m thinking of that was on the street corner in bivalve, it was torn down a few years ago and nothing at all remains.

I live in south jersey Salem county to be more precise and it’s honestly astounding it’s so full of open space and “nothingness” but in all reality there’s so much here to be found but it’s not gonna be up on a billboard ya gotta get out

Why is so much of South Jersey abandoned? Plain and simple: it is too damned
difficult and expensive to get government's cooperation and the required
permits. Economic recovery experts and business leaders, including our
businesses nonprofit organizations have faced this time and again. We have a
'one size fits all' approach to permitting cost in the state while everyone
recognizes that what is appropriate, affordable and manageable in the northern
part of the state is simply economically impossible here in South Jersey. We
have the technology and resources to rebuild responsibly and sustainably here,
but can't afford the government required permit costs. As an example, one small
community sustainability project I worked on last month called a "ramp of
last resort" where the physical materials (mostly concrete blocks) cost
$5,000, the labor would be donated by local businesses and nonprofits, but the
permitting legal and engineering cost would be $25,000+, so the project was
abandoned because of this. Even the NJDEP leadership in charge of permitting
knows that the system is broken. Our local politicians seem to have given up
hope of reforming the NJDEP permit process. Thus, most of my rural South Jersey
county sits in ruins despite our efforts at sustainable recovery.

Just use Google in satellite mode and you can find all the places, does help if you are from that area however. But Southern Jersey is known as the place that "Time Forgot", and this video proves it!

Part-Time Explorer yeah, the future of the ship is uncertain, so i hope you can get in before something happens and the ship isn’t around, or is at the bottom. Great work on the thg game! I’m a titanic fan myself, my current goal is to make a model of the ship sink and split in real time, but, the model is still in testing phases. Can’t wait to see the final game, even if i probably can’t afford to purchase it when it comes out.
