This was great! I've always been a fan of Ortlieb panniers and used to use them until I discovered Revelate Design bags for bikepacking setups. I did think about testing out the new Ortlieb seat bags. I like the air release tab, they do indeed come in handy.
I just bought a pair of Sport-Roller Classic front pannier. I am able to mount a back rack and was more comfortable with panniers than a Bikepacking Setup. Will find out when I go on my first adventure in 2 weeks.
I've used the metal band mount system on a Rixen + Kaul / klickfix seatpost bag and an add on pump peg and its pretty secure. Google "KLICKfix Mini Adapter" to see. However you can't leave just the band alone on by itself, it needs the rest of the mount to tighten up the band. Also you can't really take the system on and off or move it without needing a new band every time, as it puts a permanent crease in the band. You don't want to fold it and refold it, as it will weaken an break like a paperclip being bent back and forth. Replacement bands are pretty cheap (

The bolt through the plastic section tensions the folds in the band and pulls the “nut” into a recess, which is what tensions up the “hose clamp”. Removing the bolt detentions the clamp which means it can move or be adjusted slightly, but without the bolt and the plastic section the clamp will work itself loose.
Do you think the fork bags could be mounted to forks that have the bolts offset from the center of the fork? Seems like the bag might hit the tire unless it is center mounted.
I just went in the other direction of in terms of packing - i have been on Carradice SQR +Super-C barbag, Restrap bikepacking bags (bar, post and frame). Now im on the Ortlienb gravel-pack front panniers on a Tubus Dou rack (fixed to a new Surly Midnight Special w. Compass tyres & Campagnolo H11 groupset). I expected the Orlieb Gravel-pack on the Tubus Dou's to to rattle based on your review - but it doesen't, not even a sound on downhill single trail or on highspeed 70kmh/h paved descents.
The fork packs are going to be perfect for desert water carries in CNOC Vecto 2L water bags. It's almost like Ortieb and CNOC did a collab it's just so perfect.
Ortlieb is one of my favs next to green guru. I have tried others and these are IMHO the best. I'm still looking for a good rack top trunk bag to replace my Timbuk2 Hunchback.
Would be nice to have the option to attach these to a rear rack for those times when you need just a bit more carrying capacity (but have a carbon fork). Ortlieb would do well to design an attachment to make that possible (IMHO).
I'd like to see the ability to mount one of these little bags directly to the top of a rear rack - almost like a seat bag. It could be done with straps or cargo net but having a rack with tabs for these bag mounts would be super cool.

No one is adressing the elephant in the room, concerning this new forkbag. With this new mountingsystem you're limited to these bags or Ortlieb for that matter. With say anything cages you can mount, well, anything (respecting the weight limit).
@@fuerLutzi they actually did address that and even stated it as a reason to buy only one and use a cage on the other fork blade... Personally I don't think it is an issue at all because anything I would ever strap to an anything cage I could stuff in this bags... I've got 5 bottles of water on the bike already. So no need for extra water in the front... Also carbon fork so won't be strapping an elephant to an anything cage...
Will the fork bag work with the Salsa Cutthroat fork where the fork bolts are not on the sides, but rotated a bit forward?, Or would it be rotated too far into the spokes?
Great job! I am currently struggling with what bike packing gear to get. At the moment I am credit card touring but would like to dabble with overnight camping. I have a fancy-but-now-old ridiculously lightweight BMC with zero fender or rack mounts and would also like to transfer bike packing gear to my XC bike. Since I don’t have rack mounts, do you recommend the Tailfin setup with say 2 panniers or something like these Ortlieb bags? (waggle bag + handlebar bag)
Did you say no to the fork bag on a carbon fork like I have on my Fargo? Depending on the contents it could weigh less than an anything cage with a larger water bottle.
Yes for my Fargo fork. I should have been more patient. So what would Russ and Laura use those carbon fork mounts for? I have the medium Ortlieb seat pack, a Swift Zeitgeist for the front and a custom Rogue Panda frame pack. It may be enough space, but I thought I might need more room for water somewhere.
I agree. Even without that GCN money you could point a camera towards your lovely wife putting it on a bike in another corner of the room. I bet there will be a review sometime in the future where we can see it on Laura's bike since it matches the black so nicely 😉
I never thought Ortlieb cheap by any stretch of the imagination. I do know that their stuff is like the Rolls Royce of bike touring/ packing gear. Red & Black - my favourite livery colours, well done Ortlieb, I'm not sure bike packing is really for me, the bags are too small. I do like my creature comforts and I'm willing to carry them. better lighter trailers are what I'm searching for. I am in the UK - North of England, Pennines. Maybe putting the gear on a bike might lessen the confusion?
