- Опубликовано: 28 авг 2014
- On August 26th, IMMI demonstrated the important of seat belt safety by crashing the cab of a large semi-truck head-on into the largest barrier block in the world. The passenger ATD (test dummy) was not wearing a seat belt.

Coming from a commercial driver, how about a 70mph crash test with a loaded trailer and a gross weight of 80,000 pounds?
Nah try 120,000
Are you outside the USA?
outside usa yes and not from europe
Usa just needs to increased the weight and get B-Doubles goin on and reconstruct the cab with muscular so it can withstand a hit from a wall
Ah, makes sense then
No.
now test it again with a full load...
Turn the cab into a soda can
That's exactly what would happen. I remember reading about a trucker who was killed when he rear ended another semi. The cab got crushed between the two heavy trailers like a soda can.
Yelp fully loaded trailer
horse shit everywhere
R.I.P
No airbags?!
there are a lot of commercial vehicles without airbags. I drive a 2008 Isuzu box truck has no airbags.
Remember to always make sure the occupants of your vehicle are wearing seat belts. Unless of course you are transporting groups of kids or adults.
barkinruday Hang, why don't they?
Traffic safety regulators don’t require the basic safety equipment in medium- and heavy-duty trucks. There’s no clear answer as to why relatively inexpensive air bags are not required on big trucks.
barkinruday Well I'm glad they don't have aby unnecessary regs
0:18 lemme take a look in this glove box
+DolleHengst Cant stop laughing LOL
+DolleHengst LOL!!!
"Oh! I'm dead"
LOOOOL!
+DolleHengst Decapitation was almost certain.
Problem with these, is the impact goes from 40 to 0 and then recoils back. In the real world, a semi truck doesn't have that many things to stop it like that. Most things a semi would hit wouldn't be heavy enough to stop it that quickly
Another semi?
Even then, the two frames colliding would absorb alot of impact and act as a cushion
Wall?
@@elfakirabderrahim9650 How often do you see a truck collide with a wall, at 65mph?
@@elfakirabderrahim9650 most walls wouldn't survive
See how the bonnet detatches and goes up to the windscreen. And the nose could deform a bit more I say.
I mean it’s hard to secure a fiber glass hood when it’s only connected at the bottom and it has no other connection points
And also I think if you run into a wall coming to a dead stop the least of your dramas would be the bonnet hitting you in the face, imagine the trailer hitting you in the back of the head haha
@@Bigsoot7393 the bonnet decapitate ya the load crushed ya
@@ballbounces968 yeah well at least your head might have a chance to roll away that way
You mean the hood?
also trucks usually destroy things they hit not the other way around
Lol! True enough. Although I have seen a few lose fights to trees, and one lose a fight to a solid rock cliff face out west. (USA)
good one..
Of course! How would a bridge post be any match to a SEMI TRUCK *hall effect voice*? Or other trucks?
But wait, since trucks destroy things but don't get destroyed, if two trucks hit each other it will reverse the effect and they both don't get any damage but the damage itself gets damaged, I see!
+Redslayer86 Well lets be fair to trucks even a modern army tank would lose the fight against a rock cliff face.
TheAceHD not when a train is involved
Surprised modern trucks don't have airbags.
European trucks use airbags
+ᅚ Commercial trucks lack seat belts, you say? Surely you jest.
+Adam N It's an american truck, they think if it's big, you're invincible in it. American trucks are about 40 years behind Mercedes, Volvo, Scania, Renault, Man, etc. in terms of technology and engineering.
40 years my ass...
RoadReaper Videos I know nothing about trucks and even I agree with u.
You'd think that being the largest, heaviest vehicles on the road, that they'd be top of the line in terms of safety for the driver, but not even an airbag?!
this truck came 3 years before semis start use airbags
An airbag wouldn't do anything with a loaded truck. The driver would be crushed by the trailer instead. Good thing is trucks very rarely hit things this solid, a car or small tree won't stop a loaded semi.
I drive a current kenworth and it doesn't have an airbag.
You gotta understand what exactly real semi truck accidents result in. There are no airbags on earth that are gonna save you if you slam an 80,000lb vehicle into a concrete slab. If the impact alone doesn’t kill you, the loaded trailer behind you will.
There’s only so much that can realistically be done, a lot of the mitigations for accidents with semi trucks come down to their core design, cab on frame design allowing the cab to basically break free from the rest of the vehicle (you kind of see that here), the crush zones of a semi truck, note that the engine and transmission tend to go under the truck and the entire front end becomes a gigantic crush zone, and the key factor here:
Training.
Commercial drivers are held to much higher standards, you don’t walk away after passing off insurance information for a little fender bender, you’re driving something which has the capability to drive clean through a house and keep going out the other side, even minor accidents will destroy small vehicles. As such that big factor of training is vital in avoiding accidents at the drivers fault, you don’t have to worry about the aftermath of an accident if you don’t cause an accident. That applies to every aspect of driving a vehicle like this.
There’s much more going on than one would think with truck safety, the way they’re designed to sustain an impact is a small part of that, and concerns for the driver inside are basically a waste of weight.
Tldr if you got into an accident with a truck that would deploy the airbags, you already screwed up a dozen other times before that point and the airbags won’t save you anyway.
@@biscuitdingus I'd like my face cradled by an airbag before Im made into a paste by my trailer.
my 2012 Freightliner has an airbag in the steering wheel like any other modern vehicle. or course I make it a point to avoid driving into 15' tall blocks of concrete.
agreed on that
making a point against that, this isn't even an overlap test.
yea. show me one instance that a rig is going to meet an immovable object! when your 60k+ lbs doing 55+mph. nothing is unmovable. I've done my share of Towing and i've seen a 3' across oak tree get uprooted
chieftp unless your brakes fail
Xàphán of the Nightfall, a 3' oak tree is a toothpick compared to a bridge pier. In heavy collisions sometimes the hitch pin will rip loose from the trailer frame, allowing the trailer to keep going and crush the cab. More often the load will come thru the front bulkhead (wall) of the trailer, crushing the cab.

I'd call that a fail
that hood turned into guillotine
@Mrs Cabot idk anything about trucks but that did look surprisingly similar to crash tests I've seen involving 30+ year old cars
@Mrs Cabot yeah I get that I was just saying and basically agreeing with you
@Mrs Cabot no worries I do the same thing
Why all the cut always? You never see the full results of the impact.
Great truck! Should be called 'Guillotine'.
Just wait till the trailer comes through the back of the cab
He was 10cm away from receiving a deep new “haircut” by the hood
Poor Peterbilt 377. Those trucks are rare.
0:14 Wear your damn seat belt.
should do a test loaded, airbags would not do much to help a person as the trailer/load comes through the rear of the cab.
Jerry Bear yeahh im wondering what would happen with a 40k pound load
Jerry Bear not to mention an engine the size of a smart car coming through the instrument panel
then the added weight of the trail would cause the tractor unit (the truck) to go right through what ever it's crashing in front of it
That has to be the most retarded statement I've ever heard. Using that logic then we shouldn't make motorcycle riders wear helmets because if they get hit on the interstate they're dead anyway. There are tons of situations where an airbag in a semi can save a life. Just because it doesnt work every single time doesnt mean we just dont use them.....
most new trucks have airbags, seat belts also help people in an accident. Not saying trucks should not have airbags just that trucks are loaded more often than not and a test loaded would also be an accurate test. maybe the fiberglass/sheet metal cab could stop tens of thousands of pounds of material.
Big Respect for the Test dummy for driving and not screaming Hes so brave Look at 0:05

no airbags?
nobody got time for that shit

Peteto Chibs+ "Come to Europe and you'll have airbags on all windows and on the dashboard, in the steering wheel etc... There's even airbags covering the window so that you don't fall out or get an arm outside and get it crushed under the truck." that's because europeans don't drive as well as Americans.

It's crazy to see how the body-on-frame construction has this weakness of the frame taking the impact like a champ, but leaving the massive body no other option than to warp and bend and slide and cause all sorts of damage.
@Black Man "leave the car completely wrecked" Isn't that, the point? The car takes all the damage so the occupants don't. I would also imagine a unibody allows more control and consistency during impacts
@Black Man cars are still made out of Aluminum and Steel alloys. Modern cars are far sturdier than classics. I love classics, but If you think a body on frame car from 30 years ago is safer, you're a meth head.
They have super stiff and strong chassis so if the body strongly attached to frame the g-force will crush the driver at low speed crash with no load
Interesting, the cab mounts broke. You see the bonnet and chassis stop dead, but the cab keeps going into the back edge of the bonnet. It's not a very realistic test, since truck accidents don't happen that way, but a fascinating strength test.
In a real world accident, you are lucky when the cab breaks free before the load in the trailer crushes you
@@account4info That depends on what you hit and how you hit it. A mate of mine was killed when he ran up the back of another truck with no tail lights in fog. His load of aerosols and groceries pushed him and his cab into a load of steel coils. To this day i hope the crush killed him before his conflagrating load would have. His load was burning for two days before the firies could get it fully extinguished.
Im about to drive a semi on icy roads in a bit, thanks youtube. I totally needed this right now haha.
Seat belts and airbags would be irrelevant at this point. If a truck managed to hit something solid enough to stop it dead like this, the trailer or load is just going to break free and crush the cab of the truck flat. And for those wondering, this is a Peterbilt 377, which came out in 1986 and was discontinued in 1999. Not even close to a modern truck, so no airbags.
Yeah but judging by the design of the truck, it must be at least 10 years old. Although the interior looks like early 90's. No wonder it sucks ass in crash tests.
Mr Cabot That’s false look at Ford. But maybe some
@Mrs Cabot that's just not true
It's a 1987-2001 Peterbilt 377, so yes it was a little outdated. But Peterbilt has used the same basic cab shell design for almost 50 years.
Lol the test was to demonstrate the importance of seatbelts- which is why the passenger wasn't wearing a seat belt
@@frostythesnowman6297 chevy has used the same interior for numerous different cars in the last 5 years ranging from the equinox to the Cruze dont forget the trucks
I'd hate to be that person that clean up each mess between tests
It is amazing the number of comments from people with ZERO knowledge of commercial vehicles.
cape trucking? never heard of it. damn ic's runnin like slaves getting 1.27
The video: truck being obliterated
The music: 💃💃💃
even for a crash, this looked pretty violent.
Now try with a heavy load
Now throw a red hood on it and a swift trailer and I’ll see you on the highway in no time driving like a sheep 😂
The trailer makes this test more accurate as the trailer pushes the cab even more further due to the velocity
Nice video. Thank you for sharing.
the chances of a truck like this hitting a straight wall like this are very slim.
where as an on coming car or anything else this will be pritty much indestructible.
Except for hitting another truck, either head on or parked...
@@sgriffiths1448 yup just a strong solid wall or multiple roll overs can bring a fatal accident. Besides that, a truck will be pretty much survive anything it crashes into.
I'd love to see the same test with 30 tons of palletised cargo... any likelihood of that?
The passenger was probably just looking for some napkins in the glovebox. lmao

Next video they do it should be a Main battle tank vs that barrier block.
Can it withstand several tons of armor impacting it at 60 mph / 100 Kph?
Especially when it doesn't want to dispell its energy in crumpling.
I bet the tank will survive with minor damage but the crew will be knocked out/killed.
Surprisingly good results, all that's missing is 3-point seat belts.
He sure checked that glove box out up close and personal.
It’s also missing an 80,000 pound load
How often do you guys have to replace that wall? What kind of service life do you get out of it?
The bigger problem is the 60,000LBS behind the cab still heading to the scene of the accident.
0:16 it looks like the passenger gets eaten by the truck
You semi drivers be safe out there!
That'll buff right out
The way the engine hood went inside the cabin is way worse than the lack of airbags.
Ferb, I know what were gonna do today.
I think if your traveling down the road with a load, and you come into contact with a suv head on, you'll be fine
Yep, and the family in the SUV is no more...yikes
Every truck should be designed with a front nose and engine because in case of a crash you are very well protected, with flat front truck (don't know how to call them) in case of a crash you are almost certain to be crushed in between the obstacle and your trailer.
They are called Cab-overs.
R.I.P Optimus Prime
As a professional driver, I call this a fail. No airbags on $150k truck and the way that hood went right inside is scary, doesn't have to be metal to hurt you. If this would be up to me, I would force all trucking manufacturers to make safety at least %80 better. Starting with airbags, and a cage. There should be cage out of height strength steel build inside the cabin. Cabin should detach from frame in case of brutal accident. Also small overlap, past the engine you have no protection and everything is being ripped.
yourfast07
This truck is a "377"model Peterbilt that was 1st manufactured in 1988 & PACCAR only made this set back axle design for just a few short years there after. This truck back then did not no where list for $150,000 brand new back then & is not a $150,000 rig now! At tops. . .anywhere between $85-87,000 at the most!
having your cabin detach is the opposite of a good idea, you'd be tumbling down the road in your cabin if you truck hits something solid enough. Can tell you right here thats going to be doing more bad than good.
The Dutchinator Detach cab works really good in Europe, cabs in volvos, Scania, Mercedes are very well made, when you're in accident where there is enough pressure on cabin to be smashed with you inside of it, the cabin simply detaches (being ripped) from the truck giving the driver bigger chances of survival. Even from getting hit by poorly loaded freight on flatbed, here in US, you'll see cabins destroyed, drivers hurt or killed, where a simple cabin detached would save a driver. Now even cabin is well caged, it's better to end up on other side of the road then smashed inside on. www.truckstopsrouting.com/us/top-5-benefits-european-truck-design/
yourfast07 with enough force the cab will come off the frame of any American truck, you basically have 2 body mounts up front and 2 airbags, 2 shocks, and on most trucks a torque rod at the back of the cab/sleeper
what a waste of beautiful machinery, although it's being done to potentially save lives.

I'm not sure if the moronic one here is you because you lack reading skills.

"Autobots, rollou(bang!)" - Optimus prime
First off, this is a late 80's/early 90's Peterbilt. Nearly all new Class 8 trucks sold in North America contain airbags, antilock brakes, stability control, and some have air disc brakes and collision avoidance. It would not be a stretch to say the new Paccars are safer, overall, than the older designed, constantly overrated (and overpriced) Volvo.
P Kranz sorry buddy but European trucks and cars are still better
Hammer Smith Scania disagrees
Late 80's early 90's? That Truck is like a 2002 or so. FFS embarrassing.....
D4VE THEFIRST+ no way nobody can make a more powerful truck then an american, also don't a lot of eurotrash cars have american parts in them? hell jaguar and land rover are owned by ford. and it's funny because jaguars for the most part were absolute shitty cars until they were bought out by ford. eurocars are ass! the only european cars that l actually like are german cars, because germans can't build anything the wrong way it's immpossible.

l think you would have an explosion of blood and guts at that point.
how fast was this barrier impact speed in the crash test?!
Good job
There aren't airbags!?!?
it's an old truck and there isn't really a need for airbags since your truck will plow right threw anything it hits, there aren't very many things out there that can bring a 80,000lbs speeding truck to a total stop in less than a second. you will most likely hit a car or a building, not a reinforced wall of solid concrete.
100,000 bucks doesn't buy you air bags LOL

where are the airbags????
There are no airbags in a semi truck well not in this model I'm not too sure about the newer trucks but this. Is a 98-00 model 377, meaning it lacks a few things.
there isn't any airbags in semis.

Where are the seatbelts is the more important question.
still safer than those dumbass Euro trucks with flat fronts
The new Volvo FH is the safest truck ever built. And what about the new Scania. Don't talk nonsense!
Mike Theunissen there is nothing in front of the cab to protect it from crushing its occupants
ASAPVENENO That's right. There is nothing in front of it indeed. But that's why the cab itself is made to protect it's occupants. Just take a look at one of Volvo's crash test videos. They're nice trucks, trust me. I'm not saying that US trucks are shit or something, but don't underestimate the EU trucks :P
It's called crumple zones, silly
+Oliver K. Didn't you see the bonnet pushing into the windscreen? That doesn't look safe. And American trucks are bigger, harder to drive without hitting things

it's worth noting that this truck model is at least 15 years old
thats why european trucks are much safer.

+Jaymobe07 Um, they do it all the time, you idiot.
+Geely GE To be fair in both styles of cab you would be walking away from this crash a little sore but nothing too major if you wore seatbelts. Not bad when you consider this type of test simulates a head on colision with a vehicle the same weight as yours. It would be the cargo you're towing that would be what kills you.
BeMWe E36 hahah cabovers really poor driver would be killed instantly
Good luck doing this in a cab over.
That crash test is nothing without a heavy load behind it
How often are you hitting a solid wall with your truck? Most things are smaller than a truck and will loose
now THATS a lot of damage!
The hood goes: let me introduce my cutting skills
I'd like to see what actually stops a truck like that. Maybe 1 out of every 1000 crashes.
A car won't stop a truck like that, 5, 10 or 20 won't either.
Today I learned even commercial trucks are crash tested.
Jigsaw: "Game over!"
Interesting to note the dummies didn't have shoulder harness and lap belts fastened; adding to the drama?
To be fair, NOTHING youre crashing is gonna stay in one peice and make that truck crumble like that if you're driving that 30 ton beast...
Next time have the crash dummies look at their phones
That wouldn't even be considered roadworthy here in Europe. The whole cab detaches from the frame. I really hope this isn't a newer truck than 1980.
Funny you mention that. Older American big rigs before the 70's were made using surplus tooling and hence had many of the same specs as Military cargo trucks under their skins and as a result were built MUCH tougher.
the whole cab is supposed to detach from the frame. paccar has been doing this for years as a safety precaution. you know, fuel tanks start burning in a rollover, your cab detaches, you go one way frame and tanks go another.
Carl Newman There's a lot more to fuel than that. You would be better off just making the tanks strong enough that they wont leak fuel everywhere when hit.
Cabs do that to cushion the blow if a trailer or load were to come forward.
DeSoto392Hemi This particular truck model is a Peterbilt 377 model & this setback axil style 1st came out in 1988! This model was made for just a few short years!
