The first caller’s situation is a carbon copy of my brother’s life from age 17-22. Refused to get help. Eventually he got tired of living like that, got on meds, and now works full time, getting a computer coding certification, and has friends. He had to do it because he wanted to, there was nothing we could say or do in the meantime. It’s not your fault or your responsibility to fix. All you can do is set boundaries and love them.

"Opinions often block our ability to love!" Bingo! I feel that is what is going on in our society right now....We've forgotten to "Seek first to understand, then be understood." I just discovered Dr. Delony (Love your channel/topics) & have been following The Minimalists for a few years...You all are a wellspring of knowledge in human behavior & I could listen to the 3 of you talk on this topic all day! Thank you for getting together & sharing your knowledge! You are all a blessing!

Okay….. I have to preface… I love this show and I love everything about it. I am a licensed Architect in the state of Ga. The comment of all foundations are the same isn’t true though I understand the metaphor and analogy. Better yet, the foundation is dependent on the location as is a foundation per relationship…. Have a conversation for what type of ‘foundation’ you need for the relationship then build up from there.

You CAN call doctors regarding your adult loved ones… I did it a number of times with my ex husband (he had bipolar) The Dr. Would take my call and listen to me … he could not (and did not) compromise the privacy of my ex. They WILL take the call.

I agree n understand Mack. How can people even contemplate marriage n now approaching 30 n looking to bring children into the world n they can't even have a real conversation about anything adult. Its absolutely insanity to think you're not going to have to communicate about things.

In my last year of marriage my 'husband' told me that if I didn't know what was wrong/bothering him then I didn't really love him...

Mack. sit there and listen to her. don't try to fix anything. just listen and listen and then listen more. make sure yo understand. repeat stuff back to her. i have found that it takes me a little while to understand my girlfriend. if i am trying to fix the problem i am not listening and thats what she wants. even ifit takes hours of her talking. just be present and try as hard as you can to understand her. she will eventually hit a point where she feels understood and will have sex with you. She needs to feel understood in order to open up to you. you get better at it the more you do it. at first it will take hours but eventually it gets faster. just really really listen to her. ask her to say more to you.

I’m happy for people who work hard together and are best friends. But there is no way I will ever cross that line. Revealing certain details to coworkers gives them ammunition against me.
