I’m so sad to see this. We have had phenomenal experiences with AirBnB, but we are phenomenal guests. We treat someone else’s home just like we do our own, with care and respect. And we ALWAYS leave a place better, and cleaner than we found it. Same if we’re camping in a tent. Enjoy and leave no footprint!
Same here. I make sure that we leave any place we rent cleaner than when we got there, at least from our perspective. Sure, we can't clean up our germs / bacteria as even Clorox only kills 99% of them. I like that AirBnB hosts can provide accurate feedback of their guests.
I am an Airbnb host and I do host people as well from other platforms. I hosted in two tears more than three thousand person from all around the world. The majority of my experiences were amazing. I reported several times to Airbnb problems with the guests. Airbnb were supportive and fast. My problems were not major (e.g. not paid services by the guest, key loss fine, late check-out, etc). From my point of view I do not recommend renting out an entire place on Airbnb I prefer to list only shared spaces so you can apply some control over the guests.
Hazem Jumaa I think that makes way more sense...a real B&B has either the owner or employees on-site. I can’t ever imagine letting a stranger just stay in my home alone, but I would perhaps rent out a room if I had a larger home and if I lived somewhere people actually wanted to go 😉.
I am actually renting with my husband for 2 weeks an entire home beautiful, it has been a great experience I haven’t even met the owner personally and I plant to leave it as clean and tidy taking care of not breaking or damaging things to hand it over as it was given to me. I am sorry May, don’t stop renting, just be wiser.
I don't think this is recommended either, what if the renter is a serial killer? Would you pose the safety of yourself and your family to a potential psychopath you renting your place too? I would run extensive FBI criminal background checks on these people before allowing them to rent your place.
If I was the CEO of Airbnb i wouldn't let this get out in the media because it is ruining company name. They obviously do not care, they could just covered all repair costs.
Luka Paunović I think it did not to their reputation. I would still rent my home out, however, no one is willing to pay what I’m trying to charge. Sooooooo
My nephew travels a lot and was using Airbnb in New York City. It was great money too. That is until he had a guest that brought bed bugs! He had to throw out brand new furniture he'd just purchased and have the place exterminated. He learned his lesson.
There was a case where the Airbnb renter had an orgy in the family's home. Drug paraphernalia, alcohol bottles and used contraceptive devices / underwear were all over the house. Some of the random people they invited were still passed out in the house when the family returned and the police had to remove them. She'll probably be compensated for the damage but the stolen items are just gone.
Why does anyone rent our their ACTUAL house, I mean i get the appeal of having a house you rent out for air bnb or other stuff, but don't make it YOUR house. And if you do take out anything of value.

Airbnb should start requesting IDs of guests to verify their age and if something goes wrong so police can arrest them.
@Luka Paunovic Airbnb requests ID verification from would be guests and hosts too, this is just a case of irresponsible people turning someone’s house into a rave spot. They will be held responsible, Airbnb also have insurance policies against these situations

There's something fishy. I've used AirBnB in London and Birmingham England, and that house should have rented out for a much more expensive price. Shoot, renting a room in someone's house is around £60-70. That should have gone for at least 250 per night.
AirBnB take a 30% cut. She is likely quoting the money she takes home which is 0.7 X listing price. So it is advertised for around £143. So perhaps that’s just the pricing for that area.
Air BnB hurts not only property owners like May, it also hurts her neighbors, and the people who get priced out of neighborhoods because of landlords who want to turn their rental properties into "motels".
Julie Purpleskater well, as a Mexican I have just recently been using air bnb it’s barely known here. And to my surprise while I was using it in France Rome, Spain and Mexico, it was amazing experiences, but you must understand to be low key in order to not upset neighbors. I am actually renting with my husband a home beautiful, we won’t be in this city for long so we can’t rent a proper home for months. I was having a really hard time living in a hotel and falling sick with its air conditioning since it is so hot here, so we decided to rent a place on air bnb for 3 weeks in a house that is cooler and I plant to leave it as clean and tidy as it was given to me. Air bnb is a game changer.
Julie Purpleskater, totally agree with you. Not all renters are good and responsible people. My neighbor upstairs used to rent their unit under 2yr contracts. The last renters destroyed their property! It was left dirty too. They spent almost half a year repairing the whole place. Not only that, when the renters were there. They made so much noise that we had to complain to the management so many times. That's why I don't agree with short term rentals like this.
I rent the top half of a house my neighbour sub-lets the downstairs on Airbnb, so far we have had around 6 domestic violence couples, loads of noise, rubbish thrown everywhere, police at the door, and many many sleepless nights. The last guests cut my phone line to stop the women calling the police, it is me left with the bill from an engineer to fix it. There are no fire exits to the place and guest get drunk put food in the oven and go out, I will be burnt to death if there was a fire down there. I do not really have much sympathy for this women she wants to try living next to a holiday let.
I would never leave my house unattended to an AirBNB guest. I've stayed at quite a few with my girlfriend while on road trips and every time the host was there. A few had separate rooms detached from the house which offered a bit more privacy, but leaving your most trusted possession alone with a stranger has bad idea written all over it.
Kate Moss rented a house in the country and had a huge party. Guests stubbed out cigarettes on antiques. A 150 year old boomerang was missing, so they went looking for it!
I was going to rent my inner city apartment on Airbnb but thought of people doing methamphetamine really put me off because that damage cost so much to fix and it makes your apartment unsellable if the buyer gets a methamphetamine test done
I've recently had my first Airbnb experience staying in somebody's home while they're away and am shocked so many people think it's a good idea. The fact this story is not repeated constantly is more to do with luck than anything else. It is an appalling idea and foolish thing to let strangers into your home and give them free rein without supervision. This isn't even mentioning the questionable consumer protections that are lacking as Airbnb doesn't qualify for either the regulations that cover hotels, bed and breakfasts or house/flat lets. It's like watching a car crash waiting to happen.

this is why a security deposit is required. if there are damages, you use that deposit to pay for the repair. the customer will not want to cause damage, because that makes the deposit non-refundable. / basic rules in renting.
I am an Airbnb host. This kind of damage is not unusual, particularly if you live separately from guests. I've even seen it - and more - even while I was home. When people get a cheap place to stay, they don't always behave. What they DIDN'T include was sexual harassment, treating you like a servant, insulting you personally in your own home, and stalking. Most of the damage you see here is reparable if you know how. The damage caused by a total stranger fondling your leg is quite another. Having said all that, I would be dishonest if I did not add that 95% of my guests are top drawer. They are friendly, clean and helpful. It's the 5% that kills it for us.
Airbnb should be illegal! It's wrecking the renting market with places like Venice, Barcelona ... experiencing a dire shortage of rentable flats for locals. Put yourselves into the position of the neighbours. Who wants to experience a succession of strangers moving into the house or flat next door? And people don't pay taxes on the proceeds either.

So sad I feel sorry for the lady and understand how she is feeling now, I do Airbnb I Nairobi Kenya ,Africa, i had saved some money and just opened a second listing near the airport, on the 3rd January 2019 someone opened my house with a master key and stole all electronics , home theater, TV, carpets, laptop, now am left with only o e listing and counting my losses
Woah, what protection does Airbnb provide to those who rent out their places? This is prob a grey area, insurance isnt going to want to pay because the house was rented out for commercial purposes. If that was not written in the original contract, insurance isn't going to want to pay.
Christen Denise is not a gray area. Airbnb allows for the homeowner to charge a refundable security deposit but there is also insurance coverage provided by liberty mutual.
First, I want to say that I really hope this doesn't take too long for her to repair and return to business. It's never a good idea to put items with sentimental value in a business. Second, I love this story. Everyone involved seems so nice. Meeting these types of people in their smaller communities is the reason I've preferred using airbnb. Really, why travel somewhere if you cannot experience what it's like to live there?
I read some of the comments below clearly the people commenting have never owned an Airbnb and have no f****** clue what they're talking about. I own multiple Airbnb and I am a super-host as well as I own rental properties I would much rather somebody trash my Airbnb like this then to bring in a tenant who will trash my place on going for the next 6 months because I can't get them out I'm sorry regular tenants do way worse than what damage was done to that lady's apartment This does not happen often and in the rare instance that it does Airbnb has insurance against theft and damages
Can I be nosey and ask you how much income this brings in and if you actually make a profit? I own 2 properties and am interested in Airbnb but not sure if it's worth the hassle.
That is why I will never deal with Airbnb Whether to rent a property or to rent one of my properties they should at least make a public apology and cover all damage that happened to this poor woman
Jenny Reyes why should they offer an apology? They aren't juvenile delinquents. Responsibility lies with the offender. And there is insurance to help cover stupidity and accidents.
She's so calm I would be freaking out!!! this is so disrespectful I hope she gets compensated. The way by OCD is set up I wouldn't allow anyone in my actually residence.
Airbnb is such an experience for those who travel and it just takes a corrupt few to destroy for the rest. Those individuals all should be held liable.
I honestly feel for this woman. I hope others learn from her experience. With that being said, I must add, renting out one's home even for 24 hrs to total strangers is insane! I don't care how well people are screened. One simply does not know how stable the potential guest is. The company claims that this sort of thing is very rare, not good enough. The risk is simply not worth it.
I'm assuming this is not the home she lives in. I think this is another property she owns. I mean she came to the property immediately after the incident which makes me think she wasn't renting it out while she was on holiday. If I was with Airbnb I'd ask for only over 50's to stay, they tend not to be revellers. Thing is you do take a risk letting complete strangers in your home. Pity they didn't let us know the full out come of the situation.
I am American Indian and have priceless precious items and family heirloom pieces. I don't even like a stranger to come by. I would NEVER do this. I smudge my home often of negative energy. I have a vast collection of native music. Creator has blessed us with a beautiful simple home. Filled with keepsakes from ancestors. I have original artwork from tribal members and my deceased artist son. These items are special to me for the connection and family stories. Others would hock/sell them or use without care. They must be respected and placed correctly. Unfortunately, we are moving again. I can't wait to haven't things in our next home. Most are packed in a semi trailer to be transported across the US. I am sorry for the loss others suffer.
50 caliber headshot it wasn't a 16 year old renter..minors can't have legal contracts like a credit card agreement - you have to be at least 18 (they can be only an authorized user with a card - but they still could not rent a car or lodging)....the kids were there to party and some ended up fighting in the streets..a lot of young people would have also been at that concert so likely there was some overflow - because young people often have no sense during those young adult and teen years.
She has no choice, the way Airbnb is set up with instant booking if you cancel the booking you get penalised, and if a host cancels too often your listing can be blocked. You really have to be a host to understand how tyrannical these short term rental companies have become, how do they get away with it I hear you say, for the most part there dealing with host who have zero business experience and even less of an understanding a reasonable return on investment is. This lady has learned the hard way, being Chinese she may not even have bothered with insurance. Most insurance companies will not indemnify you for short term rental, now you know why.
It's a lesson for all home owners who value their homes; this is what you get when you rent your homes to strangers under AirBnB. It's not worth. The rental income not even remotely covers the cost of damage.
Open a commercial hotel/motel if you want to be in the hotel/motel business....would her homeowners insurance cover the damages....did she tell them in writing that her personal home is a airbnb hotel / motel.....do they cover homeowners who are airbnb hotel/motels...?....
Have Airbnb pressed charges against the guest ,have the Police questioned her/him? If they haven't ,how are they just let go...they're a complete criminal!
AirBnb guests who cause major damage should be terminated from the AirBnb platform immediately. These troublemakers should be subject to criminal charges.
Don't rent your house/apartment out, NEVER!! I can't see myself rent my place out to anyone, there's no chance in a lifetime. I can't believe people rent their place out to strangers, not for any money in the world I would rent my place out.

Despite having had some horrible young women on my property, I still maintain a sunny demeanor and have a rating of 4.9 on Airbnb.
People who own priceless heirlooms should either A) NOT rent out via AirBNB, or B) get a large, locked storage unit to contain your heirlooms! It was totally irresponsible renting her home to party goers with valuables in it.
Lava Yuki your ignorance is showing. Airbnb provides a service that enables almost anyone to rent out private property. That includes places that rent for around $20 per night up to places that rent for thousands per night.
I totally agree with you, this Airbnb concept is a dumb and unsafe idea, can you imagine if the people renting your place were serial killers? Safety and common sense first. I don’t understand why people would rent out their own personal home. She should’ve bought another home and use that for Airbnb And furnished it sparsely
If you listened to the video they stored priceless objects from her house no insurance company will cover that when you hire an agent they should have the qualifications to screen any potential renters Airbnb should be totally responsible for it and let them go after the offenders!!!

Its truly disgraceful what has happened to this womans beautiful home, but is it worth risking it all for a total stranger for £100? i wouldn't trust anyone in my home for a minute unsupervised. and since my home has lots of collectibles im not using airbnb for extra money!
I am so sorry that this happened to you. Did Airbnb compensate you? When I first heard of AirBnb I didn't think that having strangers in my house, whether I am present or not, was a very good idea. I think I am more fussy as a housekeeper than many.
I don't unserstand how the person renting the house isn't fucked? surely there is some checks before you sign or up thieves could just sign up with fake names and rob places?
What you think she rents out her house it get trashed and think the insurance company will take care of it. I'll bet that never happens better get a lawyer.
This is what can happen when you rent out your home to strangers in order to make a quick buck. No references, no deposit and you just hand the keys over to people you've never met. It's time for some serious regulation to be brought in.
Air bed and bug! Never been a fan, I have properties that I rent, never through air bed and bug. Her house is destroyed and air bed and bug outlay nothing to create their rental portfolio. As usual the company declined to show face and answer questions. Release a faceless statement and hide.

Gosh poor woman, I imagine it's her home and she just rented out the odd weekend. Dreadful bad luck. It shows you how nasty people can be. Human nature....
@Deja Boo That's right! But people shouldn't have a blind faith in humanity. Believe that there are - and always will be - good people in the world...but don't believe that every person has a heart of gold.
Tonya Antony what makes her greedy
This is why I will never use airBNB
This lady was dumb! A fool is born every day. I hope she learned her lesson.
Stupid idea letting out to total strangers theyre bound to thrash the place and cause damage
Stop victim blaming. Less than 1% of the people that stay do this.
Christen Denise The story says up to £600K, but not including collectables and jewelry.
Christen Denise is not a gray area. Airbnb allows for the homeowner to charge a refundable security deposit but there is also insurance coverage provided by liberty mutual.
Christen Denise Actually Airbnb pays.
I own multiple Airbnb and I am a super-host as well as I own rental properties I would much rather somebody trash my Airbnb like this then to bring in a tenant who will trash my place on going for the next 6 months because I can't get them out I'm sorry regular tenants do way worse than what damage was done to that lady's apartment
This does not happen often and in the rare instance that it does
Airbnb has insurance against theft and damages
Can I be nosey and ask you how much income this brings in and if you actually make a profit? I own 2 properties and am interested in Airbnb but not sure if it's worth the hassle.
Interviewer: so, May you walked into your house on Saturday morning and saw this?
May: mhuh
Interviewer: Tell me what you saw...
Me: 🙄🙄
Ur funny😄😂
That is why I will never deal with Airbnb Whether to rent a property or to rent one of my properties they should at least make a public apology and cover all damage that happened to this poor woman
Jenny Reyes why should they offer an apology? They aren't juvenile delinquents. Responsibility lies with the offender. And there is insurance to help cover stupidity and accidents.
@@pyromood will insurance cover this? Is it legal to rent your home as an Airbnb in the UK? Just wondering.
It's called a lawsuit. Even major hotels will sue guest who damage their properties.
Doing that is just an open invite for that to happen and they get away with it.
Why didn't he ask her, if she will continue to rent via the Airbnb service?
I honestly feel for this woman. I hope others learn from her experience. With that being said, I must add, renting out one's home even for 24 hrs to total strangers is insane! I don't care how well people are screened. One simply does not know how stable the potential guest is. The company claims that this sort of thing is very rare, not good enough. The risk is simply not worth it.
That poo lady :'( I feel so sad for her and her family
I'm assuming this is not the home she lives in. I think this is another property she owns. I mean she came to the property immediately after the incident which makes me think she wasn't renting it out while she was on holiday. If I was with Airbnb I'd ask for only over 50's to stay, they tend not to be revellers. Thing is you do take a risk letting complete strangers in your home. Pity they didn't let us know the full out come of the situation.
I'm sure it is her home... in the interview she said she's lived there for 30 years
I am American Indian and have priceless precious items and family heirloom pieces.
What women would let a *16* *year* *old* *girl* going to a *Adele* concert hire a house for a night...
50 caliber headshot thirsty fo cash
If you're really desperate for money some people take that risk
U can lie about your age
Never rent your personal home 🏠 out , only trouble ....
Wow absolutely devastating! Priceless family heirlooms gone! 😮🙄😑
Airbnb should require police clearance or something in their registrations to secure the identity database in cases like this one
Do.Not.Trust.Juveniles.
Exactly!
Open a commercial hotel/motel if you want to be in the hotel/motel business....would her homeowners insurance cover the damages....did she tell them in writing that her personal home is a airbnb hotel / motel.....do they cover homeowners who are airbnb hotel/motels...?....
its not worth the little bit of money you get for renting out your place!! and your putting your furniture and private belongings at risk!!!!
Have Airbnb pressed charges against the guest ,have the Police questioned her/him?
If they haven't ,how are they just let go...they're a complete criminal!
I’m very sorry. I hope they are apprehended.
I'd be devastated to find irreplaceable family heirlooms gone. It's a good thing I don't have any, lol, but I seriously feel for this woman.
AirBnb guests who cause major damage should be terminated from the AirBnb platform immediately. These troublemakers should be subject to criminal charges.
I am finding this hard, to belive, I am lost for words.
Don't rent your house/apartment out, NEVER!! I can't see myself rent my place out to anyone, there's no chance in a lifetime. I can't believe people rent their place out to strangers, not for any money in the world I would rent my place out.
Awww poor lady.
I do Airbnb and I've had trouble with people, from entitled people mostly.
Brian Allen lol 😂., your comment made me giggle. explain entitled people please.
@@6ftNaturalBeauty I'm glad I made you giggle, I should maybe contact a talent agent, see if I can get on stage with my routine.
And to answer your question, it's usually young women who are the most horrible guests, they are dirty and smelly and leave half eaten fast food in the room.
Despite having had some horrible young women on my property, I still maintain a sunny demeanor and have a rating of 4.9 on Airbnb.
@@brianallen858 millenials have been the dirtiest guests from my experience
Why are they talking about insurance? WHOEVER RENTED OUT THE HOUSE AND TRASHED IT SHOULD PAY.
People who own priceless heirlooms should either A) NOT rent out via AirBNB, or B) get a large, locked storage unit to contain your heirlooms! It was totally irresponsible renting her home to party goers with valuables in it.
I could never do or use Airbnb, it's cheap and tacky.
Also, there are liability issues here, that's why I only stay in 4 -5 star hotels...i want my vacation experience stress free and not worry about so psycho Airbnb renter, why would I put my self thought that kind of stress while on vacation?
@@pyromood then you get what you pay for, these places might be a scam and also you don't know if the owner is a criminal with an ulterior motive. Why risk your safety to stay in these unknown Airbnb places?
Lava not all of air bnb is nasty sorry about that i have bad experience with that
Why can't the "guests" who do this get prosecuted and go to jail. Why can't Airbnb give the names and addresses of the "Guests" to the police. This is not made clear.
Who saw that spiral CFL?
this poor woman... how sad for her...AIRBNB needs to amp up their tennant screening.... mandatory background checks...and the same for any potential client of AIRBNB checkout extensively who you are trusting your property to... license... complaints... liability suits etc...this is devastating...smh
I don’t understand why people would rent out their own personal home. She should’ve bought another home and use that for Airbnb And furnished it sparsely
why-why would anyone leave heirlooms in a B&B that makes no sense at all and I can tell you now her insurance WILL NOT pay for very much
If you listened to the video they stored priceless objects from her house no insurance company will cover that when you hire an agent they should have the qualifications to screen any potential renters Airbnb should be totally responsible for it and let them go after the offenders!!!
That's so disrespectful. You do that to somebody's house that they let you borrow, and you just trash it... I don't know how people let strangers come into their homes like this... You ARE just asking to be robbed.
I thought the property owner was supposed to be on site.
Her Chinese-British hybrid accent is quite charming.
at least she got a free hi-fi
yeah, at least she got a broken house, nice deal, wasn't it?
mei li no sense of humour, some people.
Yeah! You can't leave anything of great sentiment or value in the Airbnb b/c ppl don't respect other ppl's sh!t. I'm sorry that it happened to this lady.
Was the girl arrested???? Surely to God they have shown her face on TV news????
Easy money?
LOL.
Hotel is a business with ancillary costs!
Insurance, security etc.
I don't unserstand how the person renting the house isn't fucked? surely there is some checks before you sign or up thieves could just sign up with fake names and rob places?
If you don't have a good experience with hosting Airbnb, all you have to do is cancel it.
Her middle name should be "Theforcebewith".
She had a lot of faith in people.
So what if they rand sacked a hotel room? It would be no different.
Who wins at this? How can anyone trust a total stranger in their home? Is there any winner here?
Don't have valuables in an AirBNB
Airbnb has ruined the true bed and breakfast idea. it's a shame!
What you think she rents out her house it get trashed and think the insurance company will take care of it. I'll bet that never happens better get a lawyer.
This is what happens when you allow strangers to use your home.
I feel so bad for that lady. Her house was trashed by people who don't have a brain, apparently. Hopefully she recovers well.
Capitalism is a double edged sword
They got ma grandma
Airbnb should be illegal. I will never use them as a host or a guest. EVER!
I totally agree, this is a unsafe idea!
@WeeStrom CO Guy I agree, and neighborhoods are not zoned for tourism! It loses the value also.
You're saying the sharing economy should be illegal? That's an asinine comment without merit.
Cities simply need to develop rules and regulation to accommodate the new realities possible due to technology.
I feel bad for the lady, but I feel worse for the neighbours.
Ho hell what a night mere
