- Scientists agree that we need a way to capture some of the 30 billion tons of carbon dioxide humans pump into the atmosphere every year. One idea is to plant lots of trees because trees use CO2 in order to grow and they also release oxygen.
But recent reports indicate that we simply can't grow enough trees to capture the necessary amount of CO2.

CO2 is the plant equivalent to oxygen. Plants love it. They won't tell you crop intake and plant growth has increased due to CO2

Yea that 20 million isn't even gonna put a dent in the problem. That's assuming the seedlings survive and are planted in the correct areas. If not done properly invasive species can actually cause additional harm to the environment.
Feel good activism can help slightly but this tree campaign won't accomplish much. Even worse most people won't take the next step to curbing carbon emissions and will instead forget about the whole thing while patting themselves on the back.

For instance, Bill Gates made a carbon capture plant that does the work of millions of trees, atm it is expensive but it is an example that if you give us enough time we can overcome our problems.
In addition, even if we can't stop it, delaying it gives us time to get prepared, so when the time comes, both people and all life on earth can survive.

This segment is very misleading as if promoting worlwide not to plant trees. A more appropriate title which is also conveyed in the video is that "Planting Trees is not enough to save us" as a Forester, the science of forestry do not look at climate change as a one way reaction chain. It is iterdisciplinary. Definitely planting trees is not enough. There is a great need for CO2 emission reduction and greener technology to attain Food Security.

I work as an environmental scientist. The sad fact is we have the technology NOW to drastically reduce CO2 emissions. Most of these are the several ways of generating electricity from Tidal HEP, particulalry offshore coffer dams. The real reason we have the problem is because of politics, financial self interest and the stranglehold of the enormous oil industry. All this business with wind power and solar energy plus energy saving measures are more cosmetics than genuine life savers. Candidly I find it all depressing.

Trees don't absorb methane.

The real crusher for scientists is when they are essentially freshmen with the mind set of designing a technology to save the world. It's a crusher because the tech exists, it's just not profitable for large organizations to accept.

Agreed! Talking about and actually planting trees will not help AS MUCH as scientists say it will. It just gives us more oxygen to reinforce the change in temperature making less available oxygen. It’s a cycle.
Think of it like a water pump but there’s a leak. Water keeps pumping, it keeps filling up but then goes away. Trees keep respirating and being planted but more trees will be burnt, chopped or die from natural causes.

Prevention: not having to deal with the problem at all. Having the readiness to deal with the effects if it happened.
Cure: having dealt with the effects of something and going through trial and error to fix it. But you're still left vulnerable in the aftermath
Basically it's better to not have to deal with this at all than to go through what we are dealing with now, had we taken preventive measures from the start. We wouldn't have to survive higher climate temperatures or make sacrifices such as this
I had this argument with a stubborn asshole recently who was set on believing that cures are better than prevention. People like that make me feel so hopeless.

The only solution is to force people to *consume as little as possible;* which _will_ crash our current economic system because it depends on _perpetual growth._ Most people are still too selfish to do the right thing by themselves, so either a "green dictatorship" saves the world, or we freely starve ourselves to death... *Or, we somehow manage to properly educate **_everybody._* And I mean _absolutely everybody._ Even the standards of living in developing countries have become too much for the planet to bear, let alone the disastrous "american dream".
Little kids taught by teachers plant trees in hope that they are going good for mother nature. And then, there are some millionaries people who just give orders to cut down trees for their Factories and Industries...
And others buying florests to preserve them.

Planting trees doesn't solve the carbon problem, but all over the world there is a lot of land that serves no purpose at all. Planting trees in such unused land has all kinds of other benefits. You get wildlife habitat, recreational areas, moisture retention and erosion protection, dust and shoot filtering, farmed lumber and offsetting destruction of old forests...
It's really not very difficult cost/benefit calculation, if you are not doing anything else with the land, plant a forest, if nothing else it will increase the value of the land.
The developing countries in the world are trying to destroy as many forest as they can in order to create new land for farming and build new cities for their growing population.

The "Green Wall of Africa"? Funny you should mention that. I have repeatedly tried and failed to find any evidence that it even exists from satellite photos. Even reached out to one of the organisations claiming to have been planting trees and asked for coordinates where it was done. They declined to provide any on "privacy concerns". I have a strong suspicion the entire project is mostly a scam for donation money and government grants. All it takes to prove me wrong is a set of coordinates where the planting activity has taken place, google has images with good enough resolution of the entire sub-saharan africa, such that every shrub can be accounted for. Including historical images such that before and after can be checked for.

The fact is that planting trees has always been known to not be sufficient enough to save us, but that many methods should be used, such as capturing c02 and storing it in rocks, taking advantage of the c02 absorbing bacteria in the oceans (its estimated the c02 absorbing bacteria could be holding around 60% of the earths c02 and if we could take advantage of this we could store much much more in our oceans)

Agroforestry might help. Like mango trees they absorb co2 while also giving fruits. We may not starve that way. There is definitely a way out if we collectively join hands. The question is: Will we ?
Yeah maybe a hybrid plant could be made to withstand freezing temperatures in the evergreens and bare fruit. But ecosystem issues may or may not be a problem, hopefully not.
That's if the federal government can shift some funding towards that method. Hell, vertical farming has been slowly increasing so we might have more room to do so.
Maybe that's why we call mango as king of fruits.

Maybe there’s a way to genetically engineer the trees to take in a larger volume of Co2 at a time without causing it harm, so we can reduce the space they take up, even if it’s by a few acres.
