  • When we filmed this video these guns were set to be sold over the next several days in our 2016 February Regional Auction,and I knew I wanted to get them on film before they left our doors.
    These four guns are a part of the evolution of the Adams Patent revolver, the first double action revolver commercially produced.

    Hey just with the safety on the Beaumont Adams it's meant to be applied at half cock, or with the hammer just slightly back on the first notch so it doesn't protrude out the opening in the frame. Once you have done this you can push the safety forward and there's actually little cut outs in the cylinder where it goes into. Thus stopping it from rotating, which in turn stops the trigger and hammer moving.
    Cheers! Lovely video, I just wish someone would make a repro...

    In the terminology of the time the Adams was a self-cocking revolver. It was not a double action because it only had on mode of operation.
    The Braumont-Adams was the first double action revolvet. Because it could be fired in two modes; single-action and self-cocking.

    Guys, if you were in the Sepoy Mutiny, would you rather have the Colt 1851 Navy or the Adams revolver? Six shots versus five? Single-action versus double-action? .36 calibre versus .38 calibre? Cheap versus expensive, parts interchangeability versus hand-fitted parts?

    The Adams Revolver had a one-piece barrel and frame making barrel replacement impossible in the event of a bulged or badly corroded bore. The thin top strap was also subject to damage rendering the gun inoperable if struck. Lack of a recoil shield was a major concern. Field repairs were not really practical on the Adams because of the individual hand fitting required in its construction. I'm sure the U.S. ordinance took that into consideration when adopting the Colt here at home. Surely the Adams was known to them. Shooting a SA revolver can be quite fast using the two handed cock and fire system. Comparing the Colt to the Adams was a bit like apples and oranges. Each design had its proponents but which one is still made and used today?

    • @Blaidd7542
      @Blaidd7542 10 месяцев назад

      Considering every colt that has seen any service use in the last century has had more in common with the Adams than the SAA and SAA are only made for recreational use for men who want to play cowboy the
      "which one is still made today?" Starts to look a little ironic.

      I have a repro colt that I used to shoot, the number of times it jammed up due to pieces of percussion cap falling down that channel which perfectly guided spent caps down into the actioin.!!!

    • @samwalker7821
      @samwalker7821 3 месяца назад

      @@johnhodges8264 There are many solutions to that problem. The originals had a strong mainspring and the problem you describe was less common. The hammer should seal the cap on falling. A weak msg won’t allow that and the cap bounces loose instead falling off on cocking.

    Adams are nice revolvers, they are not the first double action revolvers. Samuel Colt invented a top strapped double action percussion cap and ball revolver in 1842 which can be seen here ruclips.net/video/ad5MdYKpL5o/видео.html

    Didn't Colt make a double action revolver in 1842? There is a prototype on display at the Colt Firearms Collection in the Connecticut State Library in Hartford. It is listed as the Cutlass Pistol due to it's intended purpose of replacing the 1837 George Elgin Navy Cutlass boarding pistols.
    While this gun never went into production due to the Patent Arms Company going under in 1842, this does technically mean Colt was first in the double action department. Who knows, Adams may have somehow seen this pistol and based his design off of it. They do look quite similar.
    I just think it's strange that Adams gets the credit for the double action when there are records indicating that Colt did it first.

      So in your mind not only did colt invent it but Adams must have copied Colts design because how could a British gunsmith possibly have done something before the great American gun maker

    • @HaNsWiDjAjA
      @HaNsWiDjAjA Год назад +2

      At the same time despite Colts becoming the king of revolvers around the globe by the 1850's, he did not bother releasing a double action model until the 1870's. While Adams and other British makers were already at it full speed. That called into question how good Colt's early double action design was to begin with, if he did not feel the ability to release a model until wayyy after the British makers.
