    For all the people hating on him for spearfishing ,let me be the first to say It is very hard to catch a good size fish using this method , lets see a pole fisherman jump in the water ,hold his breath for up to a 1-1/2 minutes , dive 20-35 feet deep , find the fish , aim for a fish , hit the fish then pull it up to the top, believe me alot harder then it looks. this sport definitely takes mad skills. Great vid and nice lingcods you guys

    Very very nice. I don't recall seeing vis like that ever when diving the Central Coast... maybe Big Sur... Some great fish.
    ... Off Montagne De Oro I jumped in and immediately managed to get two 15 pound lings. I threw them in the boat and as I went down I got the visual of my buddy standing on his seat trying to whack them with a pair of pliers... They were still pretty lively.

    What I don’t understand is how do they manage to stay so buoyant with such giant balls. This is the equivalent of crawling into a wolfs den with a pocket full of dog treats. Especially if they’re off the coast of California.

    That's good living, you guys hiked down to the beach, kicked out to your spot, brought back some of the best tasting cod, and you left no carbon signature, that is brilliant.

    • @Sugarsail1
      @Sugarsail1 10 лет назад +3

      Carbon is not harmful, nor is carbon dioxide; it's plant food and essential for all life, that's why greenhouse farmers quadruple the amount of co2 in their greenhouses to increase yields dramatically. Wake up, you've been duped by politicians attempts to demonize the energy based industry that sustains all civilization and line their pockets with cash.

    I've never spearfished around WA state, but I've spearfished other locations where water gets to be about 42F and it is cold! You're right, it takes a lot of skills and stamina to be spearfishing on cold waters. Often, I spearfish until I cannot feel my hands and my core stomach area gets very cold. I have to be careful since it is easy to get hyperthermia. Also, remember, spearfishing is the most environmentally sound way to catch a fish. Maybe they should put a limit to the size of the fish. I wish there was a easy way to recognize a female. I would definitely leave them alone.

    @lanceparker5863 10 лет назад

    If I had to guess location, I'd guess just south of Monterey, down a mile or two from the point.........you had great visibility day, they don't come much clearer than this on the CA coastline. Best you can usually hope for is 20-25 feet vis.......

    • @lanceparker5863
      @lanceparker5863 10 лет назад

      Or Morro Bay area.....

    • @ThomasVermincelli
      @ThomasVermincelli 10 лет назад +1

      What? Anywhere South of Monterey gets 40+ feet vis often, especially in the winter. And even Santa Cruz can get 20+ vis like once a month.

    • @lanceparker5863
      @lanceparker5863 10 лет назад +2

      Well Thomas, I was speaking as a fisherman, not a scuba diver.......I'm sure you would have a better idea on underwater visibility, from your vantage point. I've only fished south of Monterey, CA perhaps 2-3 times.......mostly, over the past 45 years I've fished out of Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, or at China Basin just south of the Bay Bridge, taking day trips out through the Potato Patch and points west, so my "normal fishing range" is probably between Duxbury Reef, which is above Stinson Beach, everywhere and anywhere in-between and around the Channel Buoys and out to 5-10 miles out past the Farallon Islands, and point south, all the way down to fishing off of the Officer's Club in Monterey Bay for salmon when they are down there.........what used to be known as the "bloody triangle", up until the late 1980's, before we started seeing White Sharks following the seals and sea lion populations farther southward down the coast, being spotted and attacking beach-surfing humans, over the past 10-15 years.
      In general, I would say the water visibility in all of those areas is about 15 feet, on average.

    • @sagiplantation
      @sagiplantation  9 лет назад +2

      Clement Ortiz I haven't experienced anything like that personally, but i know people who have. There's a few things that you can do to prevent them, a big one is don't hyperventilate before a dive, which some people do to increase their breath hold, but mostly just don't push you're limits, and don't dive alone.

    Hello form the DOC. You may or may not know you killed a Ling Cod from what I saw the fish is over 60years old. We have laws to protect the larger fish. Also big breeder Ling cod lay over 50,000 eggs and only breed with one mate.. FOR LIFE...

    • @andrewburnett2215
      @andrewburnett2215 8 лет назад +2

      +TMKey Film Your timing is a little off according to Wikipedia. The max. lifespan of a lingcod is about 14 - 20 years. When they are fully mature they weigh as much as 100 pounds. So it is not likely that these fish are any older than 6-8 years old. Thanks for you concern about these creatures. The population should be monitored in any area.

  • @valhalla3595
    @valhalla3595 4 года назад

    Lings are territorial and take along time to mature. With this number of people taking the fish they are displaying on one outing, they will be gone soon! If commercial fisherman are also targeting them it's guaranteed.

      Lingcod are abundant and breed like rabbits and have few predators. If you want to eat a tasty fish then spearing Lingcod is a very wise thing to do.

    • @drumsistkrieg1349
      @drumsistkrieg1349 10 лет назад

      Ryan Sampson Just because the state is allowing more harvest doesn't necessarily mean it's because the population is doing better. 2011 Striped bass eradication plans come to mind. The state is known to have ulterior motives when it comes to stuff like this. Hope it's not though, I personally think 3 lings a day is a lot of fish, especially since most guys already take home 10 rocks.

    This is why spearfishing pisses me off. Unlike us sport fishermen you guys can pick out the biggest lings and spear them. Those are big females and while thats a tremendous size for central california they really should be down there breeding. Plus theyre not the best eating size. Stick to the 26-32" fish at let those big girls breed.

      I understand your point, but spearfishing is by far the most sustainable way to collect, and gather from the ocean. It is the only completely non by-catch method of fishing,. Even sport fishermen will once and a while hook into something that they aren't supposed to that won't make it. Besides, at least we're not loosing gear and releasing toxic lead into the ocean, or leaving long strands of almost invisible mono, stretching like close-lines through the kelp. You do have a point about being more selective, but if you pulled up a huge ling while line fishing, would you honestly throw it back? If so, than good for you! It tasted pretty good to me! :)
      ps. you act like it is easy to pick off lings on a very treacherous coast while descending into underwater caves all the while starved of oxygen. Most sport fishermen that i know reel up fish from nice boats, yards out of the water with equipment meant to make their life even easier, all the while never getting a drop of water on them or risking anymore thank a spined finger.

      I see nothing wrong with spearfishing. a fisherman can also catch the big ones too on a line. You're just upset cause he can pick and choose.

    Wow. No fishing limit for one fish per day no minimum size. I guess it is a killings paradise in California. If you do this in other places you can pay up to 6000 $ fine.

    Shame on you! Those big female fish are the breeders in that ecosystem! I’m a vegan and even I know they don’t taste good! You should have thrown them back after you shot them and saw how big they were! Also... where is this? Farallons?
