  • So Alex picked the absolute best weekend to visit Northern California. The goal was to spear some fish and grab some abalone. We did just that! The water was amazingly clear. I could find lingcod and cabezone from the surface as well as plenty of rockfish and abalone. I dove for 3 days straight and I really hated to leave. It was paradise up there.

    Say can you give me a precise location on where this place is. Last time I tried the south side of Casper cove but it didn't turn out too well I only spotted one cabezon. The rest were surfperch and kelp greenling.

    any tips for hunting ling cod I don't have a problem with any other fish except these. I've seen these but they swim so fast.

    • @abzde
      @abzde  9 лет назад

      Bring a lucky rabbit's foot with you on your dives. Haha just kidding ;) I don't think there's any secret to hunting lingcod. I've only hunted them on two trips and that's what you see in this video. If I can see a lingcod from a distance I can swim right up to them without much worry. Just fire before you get too close or they'll bolt.

    • @jamestrevor2279
      @jamestrevor2279 9 лет назад +1

      abzde ah that's the problem they're usually very well hidden within thin crevasses and when they do swim out they dart out like torpedoes. I mainly hunt kelp and olive rockfish on my dives and I go every week at Monterey bay. My Favorite to least favorite fish to eat: CAbezon, China rockfish, Kelp rockfish, olive rockfish, Lingcod, Blue rockfish, black rockfish, striped/pile surfperch, kelp greenling, opaleye.

    What's the go there with the rules and regulations for abalone ?
    Asking for a friend from Australia 🇦🇺

    • @abzde
      @abzde  4 года назад +1

      They changed the rules recently. All abalone in California is illegal to take now.

      @@abzde due to fisheries regulations? 'Season closed' for stock breeding, rest and rejuvenation?

    • @abzde
      @abzde  4 года назад +1

      @Sean Tran There was a large storm with high temperature water that killed off a ton of abalone. The abalone are not recovering and officials want to keep California closed down to abalone fishing for the foreseeable future. They will review the abalone population in 2021 and extend the ban on abalone fishing if they feel things are not improving.

    Great video! That first ab looked tough, not sure if you know but try your best not to touch the actual abalone before you pick it or else youll never be able to get it! An abalone is pure muscle they can be a real pain!

    • @abzde
      @abzde  10 лет назад +1

      Oh trust me, when I pick an abalone I pick that abalone. I will mark that spot and stay there until I can get that specific abalone off the rock. I will wait at the surface for as long as it takes for the abalone to lesson its suction on the rock. Basically I will keep diving that same spot until I get the abalone off the rock. I don't care how long it takes.
      But yeah on the first abalone in the video I wasn't as coordinated on the first pry. The thing felt my bar when I tried to pry it and suction cupped itself hard to the rock. So hard I couldn't get it off. But like I said before, I don't really care. When I pick an abalone I won't give up until I have that specific one.

      @@andychiza79 its because he isn't higj grading his catch and measuring them b4 he tries to pop them 🤣 id say most people grab as many as they can on the bottom and the throw the small ones back after they've surfaced.

      Good to Know..
      When I said “loud” I mean the type of music you use..
      For this video you need calming or soft music not street music kids hear in the park..
