  • 10 inch Trophy Abalone Diving at Mendocino
Before the abalone closure from 2018, this is the last abalone diving trip to Mendocino with two buddies: Freediver JP and Dive Master Jaewook.
Ocean was really calm. We all were looking for 10+ inch trophy abalone using 9-in abalone gauge (while carrying 7-in gauge). Almost all abalone were 8+ inch. But, it was tough to find a fat & big 10+ inch abalone. Luckily, I found the last trophy abalone.
Enjoy the last 10+ abalone hunting video.

Wow, never seen so many tiny abs. Back in the 80's, I scored three legal abs on one breath.

Because it was the last abalone dive, I tried to post almost all diving footages. In the video, all abalones are 7+ inch and most of them are 8+ inch. But, they look small or tiny because I measured them with 9 inch gauge even though I carry 7 inch gauge. One of diving buddy Jaewook who introduced the spot has 10 inch gauge. There was a short talk regarding 10 inch gauge. You can find me in his video. He turned on Gopro. :)

In NZ we have a location at bottom of the South Island called Stewart Island. I have had several dive trips down to this area, one location in particular was covered with huge Paua / also known as abalone. Almost all were 10 inches or larger in 3 meters of water, also caught 3 very large Crayfish / spiney rock lobster, each was 14 pounds/ 6.3 kilos, sadly I donated them to a local charity wish I had kept one of the crays to be mounted. Such is life.

huge I live on Vancouver Island are abalone are 1\3rd that size. Haven't been alowed to keep them here for over 20yrs now so good to eat. Do your abalone have the different colors on the inside of the shell like ours. They used to use for fishing lures jewelry etc. What do you do with the shells if just chucking them would you sell a couple not the meat just shells

Inside is shiny and outside is red (after cleaning). Shells are somewhere in the backyard for future decoration. Shell is not for sales. :)
