  • Brook Lopez is a frontrunner for the Defensive Player of the Year, helping the Milwaukee Bucks achieve a top defense in the NBA and sitting with the best record in the league.
Lopez has changed his game throughout his entire career, from adding a three point shot, to now being in conversations for the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. With Brook Lopez playing like this, Milwaukee is gonna be tough to beat in the playoffs.

The crazy thing is how his game was so different when he was young. He was known as a post player who rebounded well but didn't defend and never shot the three. Then he became a 3 and D guy. He was never ever considered either of those things at one point. Its truly the best transformation I have seen a guy have (Also I think he still leads the Nets in all time points scored which just shows how different he used to be)

Look at the ROY race, where Jalen Williams is playing incredibly since all start weekend, but Banchero has it all but locked up because he's had the consistency over a full season.

Nice vid. I remember in 2020 people were hating of Brook Lopez and the Bucks defense as a whole, and now they are number one. I don't know what changed, but I remember that people used to say that his defense was trash, and when I see him play is like the opposite guard is making a floater every single time. I think his defense really defies the eye test, because when the floater fails you blame it on the shooter, but when it goes in, you blame Lopez for being slow.

BroLo is playing masterful drop defense. If you slow down the video, you can better see the things he considers, as he does a few steps to adjust his position:
    - lowering his stance to drop or exposing his chest to inviting the ball handler with his feet
    - "Cleansing" himself as he repositions his body to "mark" the ball handler
    - Not raising his hand to give both the illusion that the side angle of the rim is open and to make it super tough for a ref to whistle a foul. Then either get vertical for the deflection/block, or attack the ball and swat it out of play at the rim
Most importantly, it's remarkable to watch him defend purely with angles. It's like watching Luka, but on defense. His rhythm probably feels off because the angle that you are seeing appears very different from what it'll happen when you get close to him.

The defense is working because they have three really good perimeter defenders - Holiday, Giannis, and Carter - that let's the big sag because they are able to disrupt the dribble around the pick enough to ensure they don't get going down hill. When they don't do this, it puts brook in a difficult spot which has seen him get into foul trouble where the opposing team has great dribble drivers. It is also why his personal fouls are way up as well. For the most part this defense ensures you beat the teams you are supposed to beat and forces the great perimeter players to show up for the other team to beat you. Reminds me a lot of the toronto teams that were constantly first in the east but got booted from playoffs. It's a good regular season strat but they will need to change it come playoffs

This bucks team is elite defensively. They got depth on that side. On ball defeders in Jrue, JC. WMat, Kris, Jay Crowder are flexible defenders that can guard 1-4 almost. Giannis and Bobby are to bigs that can guard most guards. López and Giannis are two monsters in the paint. They will dominate the defensive side this year un the playoffs.

The Bucks have 240" of height allocated towards their defensive rotation. They have a +/- of 16 in 10 minutes of game time. How much height does the opponent have? Round to ten-thousandths place in centimeters squared.

Feels strange to say, but I genuinely feel like Giannis the Bucks' 3rd most important defender this season. The importance of guarding the three, and how well Jrue has been doing exactly that, combined with Brook's excellence gets him 3rd on my list.

I can't think of another Center that can be what Lopez does for the Bucks (unless they are paid like a top star)

I hope the league tries to force more players to take midrange shots, players should practice the shots they can take the most in theory and if players were forced to practice the midrange more because the opposing teams were forcing them to take these shots, it would make for a more compelling game and maybe a bit more physical instead of the half court shenanigans that destroyed our beloved dunk competitions.

Can't drop coverage be a liability against the warriors or any repeat of the kings game? I really like brook lopez but I still think he'll be punished for this. Do you think the rest of the team can pick up the gap on the outside defense?

    • @unclerico1106

More than likely, just get him off the court would hurt them. If he fouls out early sure. Best thing go at him. Basically the bucks are forcing you to take smart shots. Well the opposite teams needs to control the tempo take and make smart shots. Attack those bigs, get to the foul line and make them adjust.

Also Curry lit up the Celtics drop coverage last finals.
All you need is a good pull up shooter from 3 and drop coverage becomes nearly useless.

They have better screen navigators now which does a lot to mitigate the effectiveness of 3PT shooting against drop. There are also only a handful of guys in the NBA good enough at shooting off of screens against drop coverage for it to actually be effective.
