Just bought your book and honestly, I'm getting so much to learn about misconceptions and biases in basketball analysis. Your takes are always spot on and fact-backed.
No matter how the game changes, the bread and butter of dunks and lay-ups are the heart of basketball. Bucks' defense knows that. Plus, the efficient shooting crew and kick outs from Giannis essentially nullifies any extra threes they might give up. I for one, am interested to see how this works in a playoffs. Will hot shooting teams catch fire, or will the inability to get a secure rim attempt throw teams off???
i know they've refined the system since then but last playoffs we got an idea of what might happen against an elite team with the personnel to 1) build a wall to defend Giannis 2) make a ton of those threes offered up by the system + possibly 3*) make the midrange shots left open from drop coverage very few teams have the personnel to do both (maybe only the Clippers and Raptors though the Raptors may not have enough star power this time, possibly the Celtics, a full-strength Warriors) unless they either have a crazy shooting night like the Sixers on Christmas day, or are so dominant in the paint they can negate the Bucks advantage at the rim and not need a ton of threes, which the Lakers did in their regular season game and the Sixers *could* if they're playing at their best
One of the few channels I always give a watch to when I see an upload. This, Historia Civilis, PBS Eons, Journey to the Microcosmos, and Mouthy Buddha.
These fantastic videos serve to look at the great work that coaches and their assistants do to continually adjust their defensive systems, which go unnoticed by most. Details that are hard to see during the games.
I saw from the NBA report that in 2019 there wasn't a single correct defensive 3 seconds call in the last 2 minutes of games, I think it's time to get rid of it and give the defenders an edge for once
Big Milwaukee fan, so I’m biased, but Giannis’ defensive effort is just so infectious. Bledsoe, Wes, and Donte are all fantastic man wing defenders, pat and Khris put in a ton of effort, even if they aren’t as talented on D, and they have a lot of freedom to chase above screens because Giannis and the bros Lopez are going to clean up any sloppiness.
Great perspective as always. But to key in one point of the video, the scheme takes advantage of certain players strengths while covering up their weaknesses. And that has always been the over arching concept the history of great NBA defenses. Giannis' playing stellar help defense lets Brook/Robin do their drop back role and protect the rim. If the person driving tries to slip around Giannis is around and most likely will find a way to help out. To a point where he is present in multiple sequences even to the point where he's also challenging the shot at the rim. This also impacts the Bucks perimeter on-ball defenders like Bledsoe and DiVicenzo. Bledsoe whose really good at snaking around screens so he can bulldog his target and plays into the overall defensive scheme. So all the players are on-point with their roles which allows them to get the most out defending every given situation outside of certain teams and what matchups they can bring.

It wasn't some random coincidence even if Hardwood Paroxysm and Bucks Twitter insist it was a fluke. You are right and wrong at the same time. 1.The raps use the same paint first perimeter second defense although the coverage mechanics are different hence why they are top 2 defenses. 2. The only standout difference is that the bucks reaction/closeout time is quite slower on shooters compared to the raps who close out hard pretty consistently. The bucks closeout time issue from last playoffs could be due to lack to experience in an elite system(kidd to bud) and most likely will be much better this playoffs. 3. dope vid ! i don’t know if this has been done but an analysis on who would be the best player in the NBA if there were no teams, defenses, offenses, systems, etc. built around them to make them successful. For example: giannis’ bucks building their defense for him or Curry’s warriors being the perfect system for him to either shoot the ball lights or make perfect passing plays. Who would be the Best player in a scenario like that, given their pure basketball talent if they were to be put on a random team
Love this idea. When people talk about "better" players they usually talk about it as "who would win one-on-one" which ignores everything like passing, vision, playmaking, off-ball movement, basketball IQ, team defense etc
This question is intriguing but difficult to me. While true The warriors and Bucks deploy systems that adhere to their star players, it’s also true that the systems don’t function nearly as well without them. Steph and Giannis are the systems. The warriors, even with KD , were less efficient and effective offensively without Steph. Whereas with no KD, the warriors were still top 5 in net rating and very efficient with curry on the court. Same with Giannis. This Bucks team is littered with insane defensive talent yet, they are so much worse defensively with Giannis off the court. To answer though I think it’s KD. He fits in any system and will always be a tier 1 bucket generator with his ability to space the floor
Shawn Tillis I agree. It’s so difficult and i don’t even know if i managed to put in words with what i was tryna ask but i guess it was clear enough! You’re right. Warriors and Bucks system is what makes their teams and superstars flourish. I would put KD, lebron, and kawhi because i feel like in order to truly dominate without your system built around you, then a forward would be the one position to do it. Those 3 have the talent to score, defend, and attract all defenses towards them to create plays. I would just love to see an analysis on who would truly dominate the most, given these circumstances
Zayaan Ali this question has been on my mind for a while lol. I’d honestly say KD, Lebron, and Kawhi could be put on any team or system and just dominate but i need a break down analysis to prove me wrong or at least educate on who would be the absolutely most dominant in any circumstance, given the type of player they are and the talent they possess!
@@gilly2026 Yeah I think they would dominate on any team too. But I guess its also a question of how we judge "better" because if a Steph or a Giannis provides the opportunity for a smart team to build a system that raises their ceiling so much, there's an argument to be made that isn't that in itself valuable? I can understand the argument that this approach preferences floor-raisers over ceiling-raisers. Steph on a rubbish team where he has responsibilities that aren't his greatest strengths may not do as well as a more versatile player, but the more versatile player may not be the key to a GOAT-level championship team the way that Steph's unique talents allow the Warriors to be. The same way Steph wouldn't contribute as much in a "generic" system as some other stars, almost nobody else could make this extremely effective system work if they replaced Steph. Arguably the ability to allow a coach to create a flawless system is in itself part of what makes a player great. Which is why these questions are so hard to answer I think.
I would either back up and get brook on an island after turning the corner, try a stop and go, or pause in the lane for a moment wit my defender on my hip and wait for the big to move brook so I can do a floater. Food for thought when attacking a deep drop
This is why kawhi is the ultimate stopper for the bucks and giannis. Mid range sniper who can kill them from mid range and can lock up giannis as the best defender in the nba against him
Kawhi was not even the primary defender on Giannis in the ECF last season. You all are giving him way too much credit for stoping Giannis, while Giannis was triple teamed in every offensive possession
Jon Juko Goat status ? 🌝Lol, imagine taking a 6’11 guy that can’t shoot over two 6’11 guys like AD and KD that can do everything Giannis can do but are much more skilled outside of 6 feet. Giannis can play don’t get me wrong but he’s a very poor man’s Shaq. Harden, AD, KD, Kawhi, curry, jokic, Joel Embiid, all better than Giannis.
I would love to see you take a peak into the most recent draft class best players to see how they have improved since your first looked them over. Players like Fox Ball BI Ben etc
just watching the first like 2 minutes I'm guessing this defense would be in trouble if a faced a fully healthy warriors or rockets team in the playoffs since they prioritize the paint of 3pt shooters
its what happened to them in the Toronto series last season (everyone in the Raptors rotation is a good shooter + VanVleet and co were on fire with so many more open threes available) and why they got blown out by Philadelphia on Christmas Day when Philly made a very out-of-character 50% of their 3s (partly a great shooting night, partly those 3s being easier to make when they're both more open especially for usually poor shooters) I can see drop coverage making them more susceptible to a great midrange shooter too, but there aren't a ton of midrange gods on the tier of KD and Kawhi and CP3
Coach Daniel uploaded about how good Donte D'Vincenzo is on defense. The problem with the Bucks is offense because once Giannis sits, their offense suffers.
It's so hard to judge because Giannis plays with so many great defenders. Lopez, Middleton, and Bledsoe are all elite at their position and they have such a brilliant coach. Giannis may be the best defender but it's harder to tell then it is with a player on a worse team
Can you make a similar video, but on Pascal Siakam? Since Giannis is the best defender on the team that’s ranked #1 in def. rtg, it would be interesting to see an analysis on Pascal since he’s the best defender on the league’s 2nd best defensive team the Raptors.
Not completely relevant but Giannis has been DPOY for four years straight in MyGM, which has boggled my mind. Thanks for making it make sense to me, haha

I have been watching your videos for a while now. FANTASTIC JOB really. A question arises every time, where do you get all these stats?
dope vid ! i don’t know if this has been done but an analysis on who would be the best player in the NBA if there were no teams, defenses, offenses, systems, etc. built around them to make them successful.
2:28 Giannis 7ft ass just watching Brook fight for his life down there 😂
Man your content is sm better than espn
Finally someone who can explain
With jrue holiday this season they gonna be scary defensive team in the playoffs
Great video!
Need Giannis back to this level of defense in the 2023/2024 playoffs.
This is why kawhi is the ultimate stopper for the bucks and giannis. Mid range sniper who can kill them from mid range and can lock up giannis as the best defender in the nba against him
Not just Kawhi. PG and Lou will all
Good from mid range not to mention Harrell would
Actually attack the Lopez bros
Kawhi was not even the primary defender on Giannis in the ECF last season. You all are giving him way too much credit for stoping Giannis, while Giannis was triple teamed in every offensive possession
This is why Giannis has a legitimate shot at GOAT status
Jon Juko he already is the🐐🐐
Luuk Watzke personality wise maybe 👀
Jon Juko Goat status ? 🌝Lol, imagine taking a 6’11 guy that can’t shoot over two 6’11 guys like AD and KD that can do everything Giannis can do but are much more skilled outside of 6 feet. Giannis can play don’t get me wrong but he’s a very poor man’s Shaq. Harden, AD, KD, Kawhi, curry, jokic, Joel Embiid, all better than Giannis.
@@ThanosDidTheRightThing other than lebron, kd , and curry those people u mentioned ain't better than giannis haha kawhi and him neck and neck though.
joel embiid kinda bummy though he can still turn things around. he needs to play like a center and stop taking 3s like a fool.
I would love to see you take a peak into the most recent draft class best players to see how they have improved since your first looked them over. Players like Fox Ball BI Ben etc
Gorgeous video
just watching the first like 2 minutes I'm guessing this defense would be in trouble if a faced a fully healthy warriors or rockets team in the playoffs since they prioritize the paint of 3pt shooters
Both of these teams dont have the defense to stop Giannis tho.
its what happened to them in the Toronto series last season (everyone in the Raptors rotation is a good shooter + VanVleet and co were on fire with so many more open threes available) and why they got blown out by Philadelphia on Christmas Day when Philly made a very out-of-character 50% of their 3s (partly a great shooting night, partly those 3s being easier to make when they're both more open especially for usually poor shooters)
I can see drop coverage making them more susceptible to a great midrange shooter too, but there aren't a ton of midrange gods on the tier of KD and Kawhi and CP3
i think they would be fucked against the Miami heat with this scheme
@@fst5349 but if you're taking 2s and dishing 3s, you win
A fully healthy Warriors team doesn't even take that many threes. It's a commonly perpetuated myth by people who don't watch the Warriors.
Coach Daniel uploaded about how good Donte D'Vincenzo is on defense. The problem with the Bucks is offense because once Giannis sits, their offense suffers.
Use the Gortat-style roll guy slamming into Lopez as a screen for the slasher.
It's so hard to judge because Giannis plays with so many great defenders. Lopez, Middleton, and Bledsoe are all elite at their position and they have such a brilliant coach. Giannis may be the best defender but it's harder to tell then it is with a player on a worse team
76ers will expose them in the playoffs
Diego Velazquez no they won’t lmao
Coach Mike Budenholzer really turned the Bucks to an elite level team just like what he did to the Hawks prior.
This video basically describes how they bout to win the finals
Can you make a similar video, but on Pascal Siakam? Since Giannis is the best defender on the team that’s ranked #1 in def. rtg, it would be interesting to see an analysis on Pascal since he’s the best defender on the league’s 2nd best defensive team the Raptors.
I think OG Anunoby might be their best defender
Great video. Do you think the Magic could duplicate this with Isaac and Bamba in a few years if they continue to improve?
Not completely relevant but Giannis has been DPOY for four years straight in MyGM, which has boggled my mind. Thanks for making it make sense to me, haha
After watching this I so much want to see your side to side comparison of the Lopez brothers and what makes Brook so much more effective than Robin.
Like always this was some great insight. Could you do AD next and see where his defense stacks? In my mind AD was the favorite for DPOY this year but I want to see where you stand on that. Thanks :]
he did one on AD already
Can you please do breakdowns on teams similar to your player breakdowns?
Do an old school PIP D video analysis!!!
"midrange 2s are less efficient for most players"
shows devin booker
Cp3 kawhi demar
Yeah most players
That wasn't the point of the clip
not many people in nba history as versatile as giannis
Not to mention also Bledsoe and Khris Middleton being very good perimeter defenders as well
Don't disrespect Bledsoe!
Great video as always
great vid
can we please talk about that play at 1:45? that was very prime nash-esque execution by mcconnell
Yeah bc giannis a god. Great vid btw
What’s the name of the background music?
Giannis 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
7:45 kemba has insane quickness
How he look fast in slo mo😂
Can we get a Marcus Smart defensive video? I feel like he’s still under appreciated
If they don’t give him the DPOY this year...again...boy
Yes! Marcus Smart next please!
