And he introduced her as ‘Dr’ Faye, as if to reinforce there was something ‘wrong’ with Sally. Sally had worked herself up to boiling point, and anyone trying to intervene at that exact moment was likely to fail. When Sally fell, it was a release of all that internalised fury and childhood confusion. Had she fallen in to the arms of Miss Blankenship she would have hugged her with just the same sense of having landed into a momentary place of safety.
Faye makes the same mistake though. Her response is to call on her 'child psychology' experience, rather than just appealing with kindness to Sally. Both of them are pretty rubbish with kids, because they're so wrapped up in their professions (and we learn more about this elsewhere as Faye feels defiant about not having children and focusing on her career)
also the walls are pretty thin..and sally is a smart kid who..besides being correct..her mother is terrible..don referred to her as a problem and the doctor said she wasnt qualified. meghan ..in the beginning at least..had a natural sweetness. she was also the second youngest person in the room and had a lunatic mother.
I always felt like Joan should’ve said something when she was at the doorway. Something like “C’mon girls nothing to see here, absolutely nothing to see here”
So sad and well done. You can see how all the women look at Sally lying on the floor. They remember being a little girl, times when they felt hopeless and powerless.
I found the blocking in the scene especially interesting because when Sally falls, all of the women circle around her & Don sort of steps back, like he doesn't even know what to do. I just think it's so interesting.
ehh she only did that because Don neglected her. But Betty wasn't faultless either. I liked and understood both characters. Betty was just being a woman,projecting her needs and anxieties onto Don. He never truly felt the relationship was a safe place for him because of Betty's expectations. But what Betty did in the end was just self preservation. Women didn't have many options for self sufficiency. Relationships are more complex than good/bad.
This reminds me of how my father changed 5 wifes, just because the previous 4 didn't give a shit about me...i never knew what to tell him, but he always asked how they treat me...i guess he could read between the lines
