@@Anaxiphile A great deal of her vindictiveness was in response to Mary's constant put downs. She didn't react well to that, but she didn't have the tools, so to speak, to deal with Mary. Mary herself was not at all happy until she married Matthew and when he died she went back to misery. Tom got her out of herself by giving her the chance to work at running the estate with him, then leaving her to do it all herself. I think without Tom both Mary and Edith wouldn't have managed to be happy. Matthew encouraged Edith in the beginning of her writing career, but in the end it was Tom who helped both Mary and Edith the most. The family was lucky to have him.

So by default, that makes him as guilty as anyone else of putting Edith down as useless, all her life. One of the best things in Downton is that the characters are not ‘good’ or ‘bad’. They’re both because they’re human. Edith has her spiteful side that mellows with maturity and increased self worth as she carved out her own life. Mary’s arrogance is tested and reduced with her life experiences. Sybil is the angel but actually, she shows a hot headed, stubbornness that meant she wasn’t a push-over. The same is true of all the characters. Thomas, for example, is both villain and victim, traitor and hero. Few shows are able to pull this off smoothly and write such rounded characters.

Also, the exchange she had with her dad is the sweetest .. I love Robert and his relationship with his daughters .. he doesn't show it much but in that moment .. it was the sweetest .. to tell his daughter that he is proud of the woman she has become .. he is proud of her choices and he find the man she chose is suitable .. he was proud to walk her down the isle :) .. that is perfect ... what every daughter really ask of her dad .. support and love.

I have no doubt that I'll get shot oen for being a bit blunt.
      No-one deserved her lovely wedding
MORE than lady Edith, who has been cruelly treated all her life, but in a way, I admire her MOST for being so forgiving.
Her father's remarks that he was proud of her, and later that he had a sense of achievement, her mothers saccharine sweetness at the reeption. The snarky comments by Lady mary about sisters have secretsand I didn't see her kiss her sister goodbye at her send of on her honeymoon.
I just get the impression, that all the goodwill they showed on Lady Ediths big day was all superficial snd that underneath it all they were glad to get her off their hands.
Yet Lady Edith showed nothing but kindness and love as she moved along the throng of people at the reception and travel send off.
For ME! The highlight of the day, was Dr Clarkson blothely coming up in the church, to tell Isabel and her husband that he had ordinary iron deficient anaemia and not the killer
Pernicious type. He rather chose his moment, but that really cheered me up no end.
I'm delighted that Lady Edith is finally and happily married to a good, loving and supportive husband. But apart from the principles of the whole affaire. I would have been less than friendly to the very people who had scorned and belittled her right through her life.
I HATE hypocrisy and im those days it ran from the bottom to the top.
It comes home to me all the more, as Im many respects, this is how I was treated, but then on birthdays Christmas and at festive family gatherings I was expected to be all lovey dovey under a barrage of
" oh dear darling Elizabeth." Most of that lot have since died, so I'm no longer plagued by it or them, but to THIS day, anything that even vaguely reeks of that, makes me want to throw up.

After a long time we watched one wonderful series. Downtown Abby. The incredible story of our lives, each and every one of us. Kindness, selfish, jealousy, pride, snob, mean, merciful, etc… each character showing us different kind of feelings in different stages of life. We all learn how to behave during the ups and downs of life, some learn from their mistakes and climb the higher step, some don’t and fall down. We love some and hate others, but we forget that usually life gives us a second chance we should smart and alert to see and use it. Looking forward to the next sessions.

Edith I agree with you is a wonderful character and I am happy it turned out so well for her, she deserved it, love her self-confidence by the time she meets her husband-to-be -- a gradual development that viewers can observe as she confronts various trials, one after another.

These two things are usually mutually exclusive to female characters but i’m so happy that she got both and it’s way overdue. Just like what robert said: nobody can plan on a brilliant match.
Also i feel like among the three daughters, robert had the closest relationship with edith. Cora’s favorite is obviously mary, and sybil got attention from both parent. But edith and robert shared some tender memories that i really like to watch over and over again. Also i think mary and sybil got cora’s look, while edith got robert’s.

She didn't have to instigate as much as she did same with Mary... but Edith really shouldn't have ever been ashamed to be as outspoken as she was. At the end I always conclusively liked Edith! All of the characters had flaws.. loved em all

I totally agree with you and with good reason. Mary was a cruel vindictive, cold snobby and heartless creatute, who only ever loved herself, and no one else.
