Great video. Just one thing though, in my country, most people have Indo hermit crabs. However, they are exactly the opposite to what you say in the 'Other' section. Here, people say Indos are the most shy, inactive species that rarely come out to do anything. And I also agree with this as I have Indos myself. (They are rarely seen) So I wonder... If hermit crabs have different personalities when placed in different countries!

Fun Fact: Sometimes Indos are mistaken with their larger cousin/species of all the land hermit crabs, the Coconut Crab. Specifically the juveniles as they look identically similar to Indos.
I recently got some hermit crabs from someone on Craigslist(didn’t like how small the cage was so I got them plan on upgrading to a 40 gallon breeder next week) but I definitely have some purple pinchers and definitely a few Ecuadorian hermit crabs are they able to stay together or should I separate them when I’m able to?

Looking to get a couple of crabs.... i had one as a kid and did not realize they were social creatures. Obviously fresh food is ideal but sometimes i travel for work and may be away for a week or two- any tips? Would this be a deal breaker? I have not gotten any other pet because dogs/cats/snakes need the attention, could the food pellets with a timed dispenser suffice for work trips? Thanks for including activity levels, didn’t think about how my crab as a kid was mostly nocturnal! I feel so bad now knowing the painted shell from the pet store could have been bad. Luckily it didn’t live in that shell forever.
I have a 36-in tank with three purple pinchers in it currently, I'm just going to guess that if I find hermit crabs at the beach I can't take them home and put them in there right? I currently have salt water and freshwater they can dip themselves in and I plan on getting bigger bowls soon so the water source wouldn't be an issue but I'm guessing the hermit crabs I find at the beach don't really coexist with purple pinchers right? If anyone can answer I would deeply appreciate it

No, we’ve never seen crabs mate with other species. He is most likely a PP and just not eating enough foods to give him the darker colours. If he’s got a purple claw, he’s a PP.

He was super fragile and tiny and SO pale. I've had him for close to 2 years now, he has molted a couple of times, they all eat better than I do, and the tank conditions are PERFECT but this poor baby is still SO pale! I thought he was sickly but he molts and he's very active in the tank. Do you have any idea why this would happen?

They're banned from export and are considered national treasures in Japan, such as how bald eagles are considered a national treasure in the US. Any overseas seller that claims to be selling blueberries are actually lilas, which are very similar to blueberries, but have differences.

I can agree. They can be a lot of fun to take care of, but still you need to keep that humidity good, watch that substrate and then the mite problem is the WORST. Like I wish I had kept my crab colony down to like 5 or 6 crabs, but I just loved buying more, but it was more to keep track of and care for.
Nvm I had a strawberry hermit crab and all the other crafts were purple pictures so they did not like the strawberry crab because they were not that kind of crap so they killed it .it was sad

I have two questions first what brand of play sand is the best and second can I make my own food bowls out of clay or is it toxic?
I did a lot of digging on the Playsand... Quickrete is a commonly agreed upon brand. I found mine at a Mendards, personally.
I normally use Quickrete. Not sure about the clay though.

Possibly, wait a few days and see if it starts to smell bad. Dropping limbs is a sign of serious stress.
I’ve been looking for Ecuadorian hermit crabs for years and have yet to find any for sale.
Us Chain Pet land usually carries like 20+ and on a flat sand box and i always end up finding one or two there. Once I even found an Indo !

It’s a different species than the others. Maybe it’s an Aussie, they aren’t as big as other species of land hermit crabs and they are light in color.

A new owner should quarantine it before introducing to their colony.

I don’t there is much you can do to help. Many crabs have survived after losing their big claw, it usually grows back after a couple of months.

Legs dont broak when they are going to molt
Losing a leg means that they are stressed. You should working on getting all of your care requirements correct.
Its possible he could have climbed up high and fallen. Thats just one possibility
