At the beginning of the series I actually thought Deku, Ochako and Tenya would be a golden trio and explore this world of adventures. Boy was I wrong. The way she was sidelined doesn't even allow toxic shipping. She should have faced Stain and All for one also. She was only good for toga's side plot

This was my exact thought too, especially since Deku, Iida, and her had the three staple superpowers: super strength, super speed, and flight. I know her power "flight" but it's honestly way cooler and the implications of it aren't even explored very well.

I'm not suprised people missed the point of her character. I think the biggest detriment to her was Hori's lack of time management with his cast. Early on, nearly everytime she was on screen she was crushing on Deku so people likely thought her original goal was getting sidelined for the same old trope. Then the Overhaul arc greatly misused her time and her development became relegated to moments instead of being a constant. That's why people had trouble making that link between her making money for her family and supressing her feelings for Deku. Whenever your character is on screen, your audience is waiting for reasons to get invested in them. So you you have to make use of that time and develop them in some noticeable way or else they may fall off for most people. Shigaraki is an example of this done right as you can point to any scene he is in (or sometimes NOT in) as development for his character, Hori made that time matter. That's just what I think tho.

4:05 I think the major difference between Bakugo and Shoto's development being largely centered or contributed by Deku vs how Ochaco is done has to do with one word: Consistency. Though the two guys developments are flawed in many many MANY ways, they nonetheless get utilized in more consistently interesting ways that adds to the characters and fundamental themes of the story. Whereas with Ochaco, it happens only a fraction of that time (which paired with her considerably smaller screen time and story relevance can make things much more aggravating). This is on top of the fact that some very important aspects of her character don't get fleshed out very much or are given opportunities to be affected by the main plot until near the end of the story currently. A good example is her whole "Who helps the heroes?" stuff she went on about that only became relevant in like... season 6. Over 2 seasons after making her proclamations. I do agree that there is a double standard and that the conflict between Toga and Ochaco are much more far reaching then simply wanting to ride the Deku Tree. But on Ochaco's end, I can imagine it feeling far less earned in the eyes of many who watch the series.

But Bakugo's development isn't just about Deku, its been consistently about being a much more mindful hero and person. He makes mistakes, interacts with other characters in ways that add to his development and contributes to the main story consistently. And even IF we argue that Bakugou's whole character does completely revolve around Deku, I think most would agree that Bakugou's development in that area was told and done in a much more narratively compelling fashion. Which is a little unfair given his status as a rival but thems the breaks lol

I mean, it's a bit of a tradition that MHA characters lose the fight but win the psychological aspect of it
Like Deku losing against Shoto on the sports festival but managing to make him use his fire or Shigaraki being constantly foiled but still winning because the public opinion on heroes wavers slowly, like in season 3 on the camp attack where Shigaraki explicitly says that it doesnt matter if they lose because the fact that it happened is still a loss for the heroes

  • @natalimoina
    @natalimoina 10 месяцев назад +104

A lot of it comes from how MHA kinda makes it's characters out to be WAY more important than they actually are. This applies to many characters, but gets more noticeable for people with Ochako because the series sorta tried to have her be the female lead of the story, much like Sakura in Naruto (although not quite to the same extent). Ida was also set up as a more important character like her, but was important for longer, so that lead people to have an even more unfavorable opinion of her in comparison. Of course part of it is just the fact that, unfortunately, like most shonen, MHA treats it's female cast with less respect, and much of the criticism toward the general female cast treatment will inevitably fall on Ochaco, whether warranted or not, as she is the most prominent female character in the series.

The issue seems to come from a lack of planning on hori’s part. Nothing about him points to him believing mha was gonna go as long as it did.
I feel like generally it makes sense to structure the main cast based around the world and ideas for them to represent that speak to the series core themes
Rwby while not good, does this in possibly the best way possible. All 4 heroines represent the 4 pillars of their societies entire world and act as a guide to introduce us to them
Ruby- the huntsmen that hunt the monsters of their world
weiss, the dust industry that makes magic
Blake- the race of fauna’s (animal people) in their world
And Yang and her background in the darker crime ridden underbelly of the world they live in
Avatar did this with its main team etc
Ideally hori with hindsight would’ve just kept the focus ping ponging solely between deku, shiggy, uraraka and todoroki.
They pretty much cover all the main aspects of hero society that bleed into each other well.
I only leave out bakugo because he just ties into deku and doesn’t really do much on his own to contribute to representing some big pillar of mha’s world or themes.
But the series moreso goes through weird inconsister cycles where someone can be the main character for an arc or even quite a few in a row and then disappear unceremoniously like deku and shigaraki do

I love nobara but I think from a objective standpoint she is far less interesting and is given FAR less to do in the plot. Even compared to Ochako (which you already stated Ochako can get shafted HARD).
I feel nobara is held to this different standard of “of course she’s better written” just bc her arc (it’s hard to really think of much of a overarching arc she has had so for) doesn’t include a dude. Which is fine and I’d like more female characters to be able to do that but I feels like that’s the only thing carrying her for people in their minds.

The problem of ochaco not being relevant is a problem with MHA as a whole. There are too many characters to be able to develop them all at the same time. The sports festival was ochaco and todoroki’s time to shine, in the same way that overhaul was kirishima and mirio’s time to shine. Ochaco hasn’t gotten another chance to shine, but neither has kirishima. Arguing that ochaco’s character is ruined because she doesn’t do anything means that kirishima’s character is also ruined, yet he gets a pass because he’s not the girl with a crush on deku.

  • @Mayeoli22
    @Mayeoli22 6 месяцев назад +12

I absolutely love Ochako. She's one of my favorite characters and I think she's great. She has so much potential and could do so many amazing things. My issue with her, or rather the way Horikoshi writes her, is that Horikoshi does not know how to utilize her character when it matters to selling his main ship. He writes the friendships between the boys, for example between Izuku and Shouto, in a way that gives them both interaction and intimate moments where their lives are CHANGED. Shouto thinks about Izuku changing his world view constantly. He lives in his brain rent free. And we get to see the development and interaction between them and it is so organic. If Horikoshi wants for his audience to root for Ochako as the love interest, I think he should have written her in a similar way to how he wrote the friendships the boys have to Izuku. Instead, in my opinion, it felt like she kind of stayed away from him, she was sidelined, she was placed in situations that didn't allow her to shine. She could have done a lot during the Overhaul fight to save Eri, but Horikoshi had her, Tsu, and Nejire get their vitality drained by one of the Hasaikai members. She helped towards the end, which was good, but imagine if she could have had the chance to go fight alongside Izuku? Or even more simply, give the moment between Shouto and Izuku where he tells Izuku it's okay for heroes to cry sometimes, when Izuku is so stressed out about the raid that he can't contain himself and cries during lunch. He couldn't talk about it because it was top secret, but you can't tell me he couldn't at least rely on his teammates (Tsu, Ochako, Kirishima, the big 3) to lend him a shoulder to cry on. This could have been a very intimate and sweet moment for Izuku and Ochako if he had shown vulnerability in front of her, rather than crying with Iida and Shouto. And he isn't afraid to cry in front of her, he's done it before. Horikoshi could have had Ochako think about Izuku saving her during their entrance exam. That's OKAY. Shouto thinks about Izuku telling him it's his quirk, not his dad's, ALL THE TIME, literally there are like 3 or 4 times during the manga where he thinks about it. Shouto THINKS about Izuku making an IMPACT on him. That's so POWERFUL. Izuku is Shouto's HERO. That's HUGE. Izuku could have been Ochako's hero, too!!!! I am begging Horikoshi to connect the dots. I am asking for good writing of a main couple we as an audience are supposed to want. I love Izuku and Ochako, I love their friendship, they work amazing as best friends and have awesome teammwork. Horikoshi needed to keep that going with her to make the love interest aspect more convincing and enjoyable. Instead, after giving this incredibly moving speech to the people staying at UA and begging them to allow Izuku to stay because it was his hero academia, she went to sleep. LITERALLY WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT? EVERYONE was tired!!! Not just her!!! Instead of her wrapping a blanket around Izuku, who did it? Shouto Todoroki. Another small, intimate moment that could have been Izuku's and Ochako's was not given to them. It was given to Shouto. It was like a little detail. Wrap a blanket around the tired boy who just came home and bathed and he is falling asleep. Shouto is out here concerned for him, too. He's tired, he's hanging on. He got a blanket just for Izuku and placed it on him to keep him warm. Why can't Ochako have these scenes? They make such a BIG difference. I just want a well written main couple that convinces me that they are good end game. Instead, we get half baked ship where they haven't interacted much, Ochako gets sidelined all the time, she has called Toga the cutest girl in the world, and she doesn't get the opportunities to have quiet sweet moments with her love interest. It SUCKS. I wish the ship was better written. I truly want for Ochako to have good moments, which she does have, but she doesn't have them when it comes to the love interest department. I still SMH at her going to sleep instead of being with Izuku like the rest of the class. What was Horikoshi thinking? I just want good writing, it's not much to ask but it is a lot to ask for. I think Ochako deserves better, she deserves her own origin storyline the way Shouto, Bakugou, and Shigaraki got theirs. She just deserves so so much better.

Uraraka’s development was shown from her initial well intended but kinda selfish goal as a hero, to being inspired by Deku in changing her perspective on what it means to be a true hero, while naturally developing feelings for him, just as he was kinda nervous around her as well at first, as there’s nothing inhuman about naturally developing feelings for the opposite sex as it’s human nature. It came to a point where she decided that she would put her feelings for Deku aside to focus on her goals during the provisional licensing exam arc, as we then saw her resolve as a hero being put to the test in rescuing people during the shie hassaikai and liberation war arc, to then becoming Deku’s hero when convincing the citizens to allow for Deku to recover at U.A., and now to where the manga is currently at with her saving Toga and finally coming to terms with her feelings for Deku by confessing her love for him to herself. If that’s not stunning character development, then I don’t know what is.

That is not character development, that is development as a love interest lmao notice how even when the character puts aside her feelings it still has be shown her doing it instead of her doing what needs to be done as a hero and once and a while remembering her crush, while Deku only remembers his liking of Uraraka once or twice every couple arcs.

    • @johnnyd3158
      @johnnyd3158 9 месяцев назад +7

@@sapphicwriter So what you’re saying is that it’s inhuman for humans, especially females, to actually be human, in having crushes and experiencing love, as though that’s such a bad thing. Since that’s a very toxic way of thinking. As for all I know, you’re probably a yaoi/yuri shipper.
If you actually watch the series, Uraraka said that she would put aside her feelings for Deku, not that she would get rid of them entirely. So of course she’s still going to react blushing and flustered when someone like Mina brings up Deku in relation to Uraraka’s feelings for him, as that’s how any girl in real life would react in Uraraka’s position. As between the shie hassaikai and liberation war arcs, Uraraka was fully driven in her role as a hero, as well as being Deku’s hero in the final war arc in saving him from the hatred of the people.
As for Deku, he was initially depicted as to being nervous around all girls, not just Uraraka, since he was pretty much a social friendless outcast since he was five years old in which he likely had never been around a girl until he attended UA. As the more time he spent with Uraraka, the other girls in his class, and Hatsume’s breasts, the less nervous he was around them, especially Uraraka. But with everything that he has been through in the series, I’m pretty sure that girls are the last thing that were on his mind as he was fighting Shigaraki in the liberation war arc aside from being driven to protecting them along with other friends and loved ones.

In my opinion I've always thought that MHA's Ochaco Uraraka is better written than KNY's Kanao Tsuyuri.
Ochaco gets better treatment from Hori and we at least get to see her improve and gets more focus in last seasons and while Kanao gets none of that, she just gets shafted so hard until the end of the story.
Also, Ochaco's development doesn't feel like it's rushed, it felt like she's matured unlike Kanao's development, which could've been handled much more better, tbh

I relegated her to just being the classic female lead that gets left behind with her only having her 2 big moments of sports festival and speech during villain hunt even if this argument does still kinda stand because as far the the anime goes those have only really been her to moments for a character who was initially part of the main trio its cool that this was another part of her character that exists

Hey how about a quick mha theory: back in the stain arc stain might have had a quirk awakening. We know that to awen a quirk you need intense emotion and/or a life threatening battle. He just had a great battle with shoto, iida and deku (his rib was pearcing his lung) and then he did something new to his code (save a hero he found worthy, namely deku) and came face to face with the hero he possibly hates most - endeavor. He also tasted blood from a nomu which has a ton of different quirks inside it. He then yelled and induced parlisis in a buch of people (just like urarakas awakening, extending the quirk). The series says its him being scary, but endeavor should not be scared and deku iida todoroki just beat his ass. I find this a nice explanation.

ohhhhb excellent video!!!!!!!!!!! tbh she's one of my favorites and it hurts my heart every time a video uses her as a symbol for badly written female characters in manga. I do accept their points, since ever since the sports festival every single big character moment she had was related to Midoriya in one way or another but as you states, it's true for 90% of the other characters too. Her crush is adorable and healthy and she deserves to be explored and appreciated more by the fandom. I guess that the problem is that it she pays so much of her time and energy to someone who...doesn't seem to return the favor. Sure, he's the protagonist so obviously he would have a lot more going on than a supporting character but you see him so invested in someone like Bakugou who spent most of his life tormenting him. You see him 'moving on' from his initial trio of himself. Uraraka and Iida to Todoroki and Bakugou. I know that he still appreciates and loves them but compare the time he spends with each. When a character only gets explorred through their relationship with the protagonist, even if it's utilized so creatively like with the case of Uraraka, it makes their development also dependent on them, and since Midoriya prioritizes other characters, the story prioritizes other characters too.
Uraraka's small moments are powerful but they're only meaningful to those who pay attention. To those who are deliberately invested in her as a character and in her arc. A lot of the small relazations you mentioned that led to her bigger moments were like hints of moments that those who don't care would simply forget about.
So I guess that I agree with you a lot, while Horikoshi could have done a better job with giving her more attention, the things that were done about her were actually pretty good if you stop and think about them, but a lot of the fans just don't in a way that can be considered sexist like what they claim to criticize.
But also, a lot of her biggest moments are fairly recent, while some of the videos tearing into her are quite old. It was like, sports festival>crush>small moments here and there that were mostly about said crush for like four seasons>big meaningful moments that are also related to said crush but are a payoff of all the small moments and develop her character really well.
Regardless, I really appreciate your video since as I said, she's one of my favorites and every time something good happens to her or is said about her I'm happy ^^
a lot of the videos who talk about her just go "she could have been great but they reduced her to a love interest after season two" so to hear someone saying something different is great!
Take a note, people, this is how you write a good take!

Well here is the issue with all that. This is a classic case of people getting exactly what they asked for and then complaining about it (Not you but people in general) see the fandom had this bad habit of complaining when Hori would do wind-down arcs, you know those arcs where they'd just do normal kid stuff more or less so Hori stopped doing them after the culture festival and it was said he did this directly in response to the fans constantly complaining whenever he did these arcs now that kind of stuff is relegated to his side mangas like Team Up and School Briefs. There was also the issue that his original editor essentially made him rush through the story as Hori expressed that originally he wanted to go through all three of their years of high school with things only hitting the fan towards the end of their third year, but we see how that turned out and even though he has a much better editor who lets him do what he wants now the damage had already been done, the final arc had started and the best he could do was extend it. Hori also said he wanted to do a Naruto-style time skip to when they were all adults and pro-heroes to tackle the darker side of hero society but we'll see how that goes.
In the end, this is in large part other than his old editor the fault of people who complained, got what they asked for, and are now upset they aren't getting what the author originally intended now that they realize it is what they wanted and they snubbed it but will not acknowledge that what they are getting now is exactly what they asked for.

I read team-up and school briefs and think "This could have been in the show" but I know why it's not. All I can hope for is that MHA gets the Demon Slayer or AOT treatment where they get a side show that features School Briefs and Team Up material. Heck I wouldn't mind MHA getting another show FMAB style that follows Hori's original vision but only time will tell.

As everyone has their own personal strengths, in which Orihime had her own strengths of a character, since she was the perfect foil for Ichigo in reaching out past his hardened exterior through her pure kind soul, as it made it all the more fitting for them to be endgame by the end of the series.

I see your points and agree that people miss important elements of her character that push her forward but I don't think she was underutilized that much because I could argue that Iida and other characters didn't contribute much in certain arcs but that mostly comes down to what the arcs focus is on such as the Stain arc being about Iida wanting revenge or the Overhaul arc where the focus was mainly on Deku and Lemillion which all comes down to storytelling which leaves certain characters on the sideline to focus on the main characters that drive the story.
I will admit there are times where anime can misuse women for the sake of gratuitous fanservice but I would argue that more often than not female characters are able to stand on their own and contribute much to the story both power wise and story wise such as Dragon Ball, Bleach, My Hero Academia, Fairy Tail, Hunter X Hunter, etc.

TLDR: swapping Uraraka’s backstory, place in the narrative, and importance with Tsuyu improves the narrative almost instantly.
Uraraka really damaged the story by just existing, first her quirk is inconsistent, weak, and lame so the entire story has to bend so she can do anything, the reason why toga has to use knives and acrobat magic when most of the league (not spinner) can make armies, destroy cities, nuke the countryside, and put you in a pocket dimension forever with a touch is because she has to lose to a girl with 2 months worth of self-defense training (something that probably should be part of the curriculum of a SUPERHERO HIGH-SCHOOL, but was removed to be added to Uraraka as DLC) meanwhile Tsuyu has a quirk closer in power level to the boys (when 1-A girl quirks are concerned) with many novel abilities from the myriad of frogs in the world as opposed to how will Uraraka hit them with a heavy object or drop them from high up this time, maybe toga will be able to use a gear-2esk amp by ingesting her own blood if she is not shackled to street tier.
Secondly You know who would have been way better to be Toga’s foil, Tsuyu, which quirk would be most likely to suffer societal rejection small pads on your fingers that can make objects float or being a girl who is part frog (one of the stereotypical “gross” animals), you could even have had Tsuyu show natural frog instincts or reactions and how she worked to control some of the urges of her quirk that were socially bad (such as doing loud ribbits in class and some that she learned to accept (the unusual way she sits) to show toga a path to rehabilitation later learning that Tsuyu only was able because she had loving parents with the same quirk, reinforcing that how you grow up really molds you.
Third, just give Tsuyu Uraraka’s backstory because if Tsuyu is the poor one then you can link it to the mutant discrimination subplot, and now if she dekus love interest she has an arc not related to Deku.

I completely agree. I do still wish her character and the whole female cast was written better or more likely utilized since when they are characterized it’s almost always good. And it’s also true with the male cast. I think why MHA feels so bad for female characters it’s that the story focuses more on men and the female counter parts like Kendo from the big 3 feel under utilized. If it was more even it would be better I think.

I totally agree with you but let's appreciate one thing mha female cast though I agree they should have better written but they are at least better than Demon Slayer female cast since they have less agency.
Ochaco just stands out so much for me as a character than Kanao.
And I do agree her potential could have been better handled but I'm fine with her overall. The way she had so much focus in the last seasons (s5 and s6 and earlier in the series) I'm glad she started to suppress her feelings to focus on getting more stronger. The way Ochaco started to improve on herself and focus on her hero work was just decent development for me, it shows how mature she's grown too. (I hope she gets good moments in the new movie!)
While Kanao, she's a good side character....I feel that she's still underdeveloped because the problem with her character growth is that its so spaced out in the story and she needed more than just small moments of her breaking out of her shell. Even in her fight against Douma, Kanao's defining moment is her cold venomous condemnation of Dōma but there was not enough exposure to her character leading up to this moment. It's all crammed into just a few chapters and that's just it for her.
I really feel like she was also done dirty during the Muzan fight too.
Ochaco and Toga's parallels of suppressed feelings feel much more better written than Kanao and Douma’s parallels about being emotionless.
Ochaco actually grows as a character and is more mature and independent.
While Kanao's character growth just feels too dependent on Tanjiro, that's what bothers me the most about her. It just feels like she's was just there to be the MC's love interest and that's all for her. I'm just hoping for anime original content for Kanao so we could see more of her or....not.

@@genesismunoz6008 I agree with you. I would recommend watching avatar the last air bender, Chainsaw Man, Digimon Tamers for examples of what I want of modern stories where it comes to female characters as a base line at least when it comes to battle Shonen. Tbf all media not just anime or shonen has done female characters below my preference for a long time. Still I hope my examples are varied enough to be understood.

Some of the criticism against her feels like double standards for anime women in general. A male character isn't perfect and people don't bat an eye, a female character has flaws and it becomes a rant on aNiMe fEmaLes. Same with fanservice, male fanservice is okay, but female fanservice is a problem, at that point (which hot, I could care less about as a complaint), why call it fanservice if the fans don't like it
The going from making money to helping people transition isn't as jarring as people making out to be, considering all she's witnessed first hand and been through, after Nighteye's death and the War. I'd think money would be the last thing on your mind

Men and women are made different as to complement each others weaknesses not compete

Ever since that one bath scene somewhere in the earlier seasons I lost respect for MHA. I knew it would all go downhill from there

But I'll still state it as universal opinion and disregard the series contributed
