  • In this video from Jubilee Road I take a look at 2 BR blue Merchant Navys and give them a run round the layout. 35005 Canadian Pacific is visiting from CA850s youtube channel.

I really like the Hornby R2171 British Railways Modified Merchant Navy '35005', it looks amazing for a twenty year old loco, I hope Hornby bring it back into production as I would love one, it's beautiful!

A red merchant navy, now that would look nice.

I like both but think the rebuilt version has the edge. You are right, the BR Blue really does suit the rebuilt version.

The red Bulleid pacific was 34027 Taw Valley, a West Country class

Don't misunderstand me here. Although I love steam engines in general, I'm not a Southern Engine Fan. However, the charm and beauty of a Richard Maunsel engine, no. 777 Sir Lamiel, is beginning to melt my heart slightly. If HORNBY had created a model of Sir Lamiel, I would consider adding her to my collection.

Hi matt the red bullied was 34027 taw Valley in the early 2000's for the book launch of the very first book. The reason why they chose Olton Hall was that people would identify if more as a steam loco rather than 34027 I fired taw Valley when it was in red at the west Somerset.

I witnessed the last 10 years of steam on the SR and I never saw these Blue versions.

Great capture and running of those blue Southern locomotives Matthew however I think the name plate on the one near to the camera might be a little bit better than what you see. I and told us I also noticed there no jubliee road endings with a class 37 at Cardiff Central . My vote out 10 is a full 10 for Canadian Pacific tho the near to the camera the rebuilt locomotive downfall is the name plate which is far to small to read. JJ

I like the Unrebuilt version but would have to get an etched name plate to replace the Hornby one.
    Cheers Kev

I’m a fan of the original Merchant Navy Class. And by the way, a lot of people prefer the slightly older locomotive to the younger version. Although the new version is supposed to be more accurate, but that’s neither here nor there!!

The rebuilt loco for me as it has a proper pony truck. I found out after I bought mine that the livery was only carried in the preserved era so that took a bit of the shine off it. I like the look of the new 35024 but wont pay that sort of price for a poorer product

Yes 35005 is being overhauled at Eastleigh but soon to return on the Mid Hants Railway she did ran in BR Blue before on the main line when she was running with Vintage Trains under Tyesley then she ran in BR Green with Steam Dreams Cathedrals Express until Withdrawal in 2008 for Overhaul both engines I like as Bulleid fan myself and it was 34027 Taw Valley not a Merchant Navy

Mind you I was speaking to someone about the flying scotsman and I said did you know it comes in a black livery BR, they thought I was mad so I did a bit of research and woe and behold I found a video of her in a work shop in her black livery something to do with the ww2 yrs, correct me if I'm wrong. C/C....

Goes to show that firms like Horngy are going backwards yet charge us more, they need calling out on it

Merchant navys look better rebuilt in my opinion and the blue is better on the rebuilt version. The motors on the 2000's models are a lot better than motors that are fitted to Hornby locos today.

Matt, you make very good videos, but they always seem to be too short. I like the rebuilt version. I am not a fan of the Spam cans and I don't think Hornby has made a good job of this model. I agree the colour is wrong. Are the cab side windows right or wrong? either way, they do not look good. Martin. (Thailand)

2 very nice locomotives there Matt think I prefer the rebuilt version personally but I do like the unrebuilt version also
When it comes to the models the one from the 2000s is far superior to the unrebuilt version and the quality on the rebuilt one is something that hornby will never achieve again nor even surpass if they really tried to.
