- This footage is one of the earliest known recordings of the bigfin squid, taken the very same year the family was described.
Footage by JAMSTEC, and special thanks to Jeff Day for helping source this material.
Date: 1 November 1998
Location: Southwest Indian Ridge
Depth: 2340m
This channel only has videos of this squid and I fucking love it keep up the good work
Can you imagine the people who discovered this species, controlling their ROV and randomly seeing this "slender-man of squids" just peacefully swimming with his gian fin?
Very good camera quality for 98 but that thing is scary
I haven't seen this footage in a long time and it still really creeps me out. Those tentacles bent at that 90 degree angle just look so unnatural and scary to me. They are also at a crazy depth of 2400m or around 7800 feet.
Just imagine being out in the ocean and seeing this floating towards you
Really appreciate your time and attention and I hope to see more soon and hope you have been doing good guy and luna and I have a great time in the family room and luna and luna have to
I have some more information on this footage: the squid was estimated to be 3’ 6”, the mantle and fins compared to the basket was estimated to be 15 cm and the arm crown and filament were estimated to be 1 m
Apparently, this was the third sighting ever recorded
Yep I believe that’s true
Damn 2 new bigfin squid videos in 1 magnapinna monday
truly mesmerizing
Just noticed how the arms seem almost transparent
The camera footage is a lot better than the 2000 Gulf of Mexico ones. Weird.
Where did you find this footage from. I know from the description that the source is Jamstec but want to know where did you get it from.
dam thats one big finned squid
Yessir
I would imagine this one is definitely dead by now but does anybody know if we have any rough estimates on their lifespans. I wouldn't doubt that we haven't been able to tag one due to their depths and uncommon sightings but maybe there are some guesses made with the few larva and juvenile samples we have and knowledge of squids that are a similar size. Its hard to specific info about them due to the limited research of the big ones
it is not dead, you can see its mantle moving as it swims and it is holding its tentacles up
@@prismaticerror6911 I should have specified, it is definitely dead now 25 years later
@@Zwaynegus OHHHH that makes sense lmao. although we don't have any concrete data on their lifespans yet so we can be optimistic and keep our fingers crossed!
The first bigfin Squid footage was in filmed in 07 so i don't think that this is from 98. Still cool tho.
No actually this (from what I know) the third Bigfin squid ever recorded. The first ever was in 1988.
Where do you find this
All videos on the channel are found through various methods. A lot of google, reading research papers, speaking to researchers or diving companies directly, and we also have a great community on Twitter that sends me any videos they find scattered around the web :)
@@MagnapinnaArchive "Hi, have you seen this long ass, creepy squid around?" 😂
Omg how cool is that squid this is going viral
