bass player is black, you don't have to justify listening to this, and music is universal so even if it were all white or Hispanic you shouldn't have to justify what you like.
I thank my Daddy every day for giving me Steely Dan. He passed away after my 24th birthday. Just turned 42 on Monday have been dedicated my birthday to my father since his death
RIP WALTER BECKER. GOD BLESS YOU & DONALD FAGEN FOR GIVING US SOME OF THE GREATEST MUSIC THE WORLD WILL EVER KNOW. I grew up on Steely Dan and will never EVER forget hearing "AJA" the first time on FM radio, at night in my hometown of Winston-Salem, NC back in 1978. I already knew who they were from "Reelin in the Years" and "Ricky Don't Lose That Number", but when "Aja" came out, it was something that would change me for the rest of my life. From there my love affair with Steely Dan has lasted, and it still does. Their music helped me get through US Navy basic training (1980)and during my first early years in the Navy (1980-1982) I would not have made it without Steely Dan...Quincy Jones (The Dude)...MJ (OFF THE WALL)...Toto (TOTO)...Lakeside (FANTASTIC VOYAGE), Doobie Brothers (REAL LOVE)...ELO (yes! ELO) and so many, many other groups that the US Armed Forces Radio would play every day on their radio stations. This music is timeless! 20...30 years from now, if we're still here, this music will STILL..STILL..be remembered. 💯👊🏾
I regret that Walter Becker and the former keyboardist of Steely Dan have died, even though I never met these musicasters before. DJDiscoCat raised this song to a grand masterpiece.
The disco perfection version series are INCREDIBLE and this one from Steely dan's "Peg" is no exception!!! It's even funkier than the original version. Peg was always one of Steely dan's grooviest and soulful hits and this version makes it even more so. It brings out more of the R&B flavor that it already had!
And there's the difference with awards and such mainstream acceptance, of course not to disparage the Mac. Sometimes the lack of those things says alot.
@@susanlongb4 come on, though... Rumours was/is hard to beat. Nowadays with these lame hip-hoppers and divas, I can see Aja blowing them out of the water.
Steely Dan intentionally created songs you loved to hear over and over again. I wish I knew exactly how many times Ive gone back to listen to Peg. Gotta be close to a million lol
Ha... My dad had a clean AF 914 Porsche.....yep, a " starter porsche".. Weekends were spent cruising the highways and canyons north of LA ...with a box of 8 tracks at my feet always.... Shit format.... Good times!!

That solo in 2:38 or so was exceptional because they went through many iterations of guitar solos from different folks and couldn't find the right one until they finally did.
Dude, you just keep doin, what you're doin. This takes me back to the days, during the summer, when so had the radio on, and they would play the extended version of songs, and we danced like nobody was watchin... Thank you.. :)

I bought the Aja album for $5 at a second hand record store downtown San Diego at the age of 19 , because my friend kept playing "Eye Know "by De LA Soul. I effectively proved that the saxophone riff was sampled from Peg. Fast forward to 2021, Fillmore district in San Francisco I'm with my daughter in "Restored Vinyl Record store" paying $30 for the same album I never saw again after loaning it to my friend. I’ll never forget taking a break from the night on the W. Bank of Minneapolis listening to 90.3 memorialize Walter Becker - followed the chart success of this song as well as Deacon Blues - I think I heard the intro of this song at least 10 times that night. Musical perfection. Michael McDonald? Yes!
That awesome background vocal by Michael McDonald!!!! those vocal parts/chords. Steely Dan was..lol...many band members, assorted session musicians...Becker/Fagen, work magic.

Hi there - here with a bit of added insight again. As you say, the Dan became a perfectionist studio band although they didn't start off like that and were pretty raw and funky in the early days when they played live - Don actually played sax as well as piano ( Steely Dan - Live 4/30/74 ). This is where Mike McDonald originally joined them with his good friend Jeff Porcaro RIP (later Toto) to support them on tour - Mike can be heard at 39.43 particularly (singing a break on his own) although he is also featured on All too mobile home and others here. By the time Dan did Peg Mike had actually left with Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter to join the Doobie Brothers although Don and Walt new a good thing when they heard it and would invite Mike back to help them with the 'pop' songs - every album (even a jazz one) needs a chart hit :). *Mike also quietly guest sang on Toto songs for a period and remains good friends with Steve Lukather. On Peg, the documentary you mention (Classic Albums) only half covers the approach - it actually came from Mike who borrowed it from his idol Marvin Gaye - you could say it was a homage. Marvin could sing in 4 octaves and was one of the first to harmonise with himself in the studio - this might have started as a quick demo thing but caught on - you can here it on songs like When Did You Stop Loving Me and Distant Lover. So on Peg Mike attempted to do the same and I think the boys liked it because it was different, well it was for 3 white boys :) - I think Mike did a stirling job and it remains one of my favourite Dan tracks. Thanks for the good work again P
This is an incredible masterpiece of music. There is a documentary that speaks about the production and how the song was broken down to almost individual notes. Michael McDonald is interviewed and he talks about how he had to sing certain notes in key with certain instruments.
My late Sister introduced me to Steely Dan when I was in grammar school. This song reminds me so much of her. The vocals, lyrics, guitars, drums, and all involved rock! To top it all off Michael McDonald’s voice makes this one of the best collaborations I’ve heard. Extraordinary!
