If you know the backstory on soul train when it began everyone sang live and into the late 80s they stopped the live singing bx it was so costly so by the time Mariah came they were only lip singing and bc she was still new she requested to sing live

Lawd this is THE hardest song to sing in her catalogue! This era she really showcased her whistle register and I remember radio jocks really hating on it and back in the day folks thinking it was all studio tricks, but she proved them allllll wrong! Amazing to see LIVE singing on Soul Train!

And I love how Don brought up "did you always write your songs?" So she's always been eager to maintain that recognition! Some haters say she recently started saying "I write" and "I'm a songwriter" for clout or for show... well no. She wrote Vision of Love at like age 14 right? She's only now being recognized officially, such as the songwriters hall of fame induction.

Background vocals on point all the way through and same for the dancers who weren’t doing too much or too little. This was during a time when you had to practice and perfect your craft then show up with certain standards of excellence. The entire stage production and show had to be cohesive. Now, artists can literally stand on the stage and mumble half their verses with entitlement and disrespecting their fans who pay for their lifestyles.

This was interesting. I was in Europe at the time all this stuff was aired. Mariah had the previous year broke through. I was in America when Vision Of Love broke through. I'm happy that she didn't let the politics of colorism get to her mentally to continue her marvelous journey. She came out in a time when they were looking for another Diva in music. Whitney and Mariah as probably the last of them all. But, that maybe challenged. We have so many . Mary J. Blige , Beyonce of course, Jennifer Hudson. What constitutes a Diva. Breaking down barriers constitues that title. We have the living Legend Diana Ross still with us and Gladys Knight.
