The number of times Rocko saves that pebble dork is just... it happens a lot, is what I'm saying. Like they went from semi-allies-ish straight into "I will dive into the path of a bullet for you" and it's heartwarming.

Ohhhhhh, that explains why it looks so Sharp Tooth-like, lol! The part where the whale falls by the cliff totally reminds me of the Sharp Tooth getting hit by the rock!
Underrated movie. And this scene is one of the best examples of how truly good this movie was. Loved it as a kid. Probably won't like it as much now as an adult. But still. I don't understand the hate for this movie.
This was my favorite movie when I was like 3-4 years old back in the early 1990's. At the time though, my parents could never figure out why I was a crying, screaming traumatized mess -- literally paralyzed by sheer terror -- both of the times they tried to take me to sea world to see a live performance by the killer whales there. The way they make the skies turn red in the movie, yellow eyes, giant sharp teeth, seemingly destroying everything in their path and trying to kill and eat the cute little penguins, they looked like they were bringers of Armageddon itself... I remember thinking I was gonna die just by seeing the things in the first place, and that the world was going to end.
I don't like how they recycle some of their scenes for this part of the film. That said, this is overall a good moment in the movie. The killer whales are portrayed very accurately and are as terrifying here as they are in real life (to the penguins). I found the killer whales scarier than Drake. At least Hubie beat the crap out of Drake at the end. Even Rocko, who's alright around leopard seals, is terrified of these things, and the orcas only "lose" because they don't kill the main character.
Scene recycle is Normal for these kinds of movies. Remember this is back when they were HAND DRAWN on paper, with several background and Character layers just for one single frame. When you consider how much more time that takes than digitally drawn by itself, that's when your start to realize why similar scenes are just reused lol
Mark Watters' music score for this scene was absolutely PERFECT. This is one of those films from my childhood that, even though I don't think about it often, whenever I DO end up seeing it, I'm always entertained.
Me as a kid: Jesus Christ! Killer whales terrify me! Me as an adult: Jesus Christ! Killer whales terrify me! Yeah, I know it's weird and random, but everyone has at least one irrational fear
I watched this movie over a dozen times when i was a kid and still cldn't believe that roco did something so selfless fr hubbie even though he annoyed him and even still was willing to find his pebble fr him
An average penguin (depending on the species) can reach approximated swimming speeds from as slow as 2.5 kph (1.6 mph) to as fast as 14.4 kph (8.9 mph). By comparison, an average leopard seal can reach speeds of 37.0 kph (23.0 mph), while an average orca can reach 56.3 kph (35.0 mph).
I never thought I would say this in a long time, but I will. I can’t believe Hubie & Rocko are being attacked by Huge Dolphins. Friendly reminder to everyone. At 1st Killer Whales AKA Orcas May look like Whales, but despite their size, they’re actually Dolphins. Not to mention one of the Largest members of the Dolphin Family. Their cousins the Pygmy & False Killer Whales are Dolphins too. Including the Melon headed Whales & both the Long Finned & short finned Pilot Whales. 1:30 They’re all one of the 36 species of Dolphins that live in the Sea. While 4, 5 or 6 species live in the Rivers.
I really like the traumatic music spike at 3:29 when Hubie just barely misses being eaten by the killer whale. I remember my younger sister telling me many years ago when we last watched this movie (although I can’t 100% guarantee this as being actually true or not) that the killer whale ended up killing itself (unintentionally) upon smashing through the ice ledge. I can somewhat see this especially with the whale’s eyes closing at 3:40, along with the accompanying slight whale noise at 3:38.
I always liked the character development of Hubbie in this movie going from a sweet innocent humble but passive guy to a trained courageous fighter at the end. I like how the movie shows that the reason he had to learn more aggressive traits wasn't to win the affections of the girl (since she always loved him for his kindness), it's so he can protect her.
This was always the most interesting part of the movie for me as a kid, and it looks like I’m not alone there. Honestly, the killer whales are a bigger threat than Drake; Hell, their scene is even longer. Like, most all Drake does is act like a high school bully. The killer whales? They do exactly what they do in real life, which is be gigantic aquatic wolves. Way more threatening. And what makes it even more engaging is the sky lighting gradually turning red and black. It’s most probably just forced mood lighting, but you could easily take it as just the sky naturally getting darker as the sun goes down. Which works, as it’s nighttime the next scene. It sets the dire tone and makes the killer whales look that much scarier. Especially the one that swings around and shrieks at Hubie right after Rocko vanishes. Their hunt scene only goes on a few minutes and they make themselves a bigger threat than Drake does across every scene he has in the movie. Hubie beats Drake, who then beats himself; he only escapes the whales.
As a wow fact: Killer Whales are actually the world’s largest species of Dolphin. So, they aren’t really whales. ‘Wolves of the seas,’ as they are also called.
I I don't know what is more intense the Sonic Video game where he run from a Killer Whale at the beach or this scene from my childhood movie Pebble and The Penguin.
Notice how Hubie never once tries to get his pebble back after this scene when he previously risked his life to get it back from the Leopard Seal. Not even Drake managed to terrify him as much as the Killer Whales did and for good reason.
My family got this on VHS back in the day when we were in Wal-Mart and a TV in the electronics department had this movie playing and it was on this scene and my younger brother who couldn't have been older than three at the time kept exclaiming about "sharp tooth!" when it showed the whale so we had to get it.

What they forgot here is the wave sneak attack method in icy parts real killer whales hunt seals useing it as it’s too dangerous to be on it as icebergs are very cold and they will likely if they mess up freeze to death so 4 members go side by side swim at full speed this speed builds a wave then they swim under the iceberg as the wave washes over it and cause of the waves speed it goes fast to the prey before they can react washing them off the iceberg for a easy target in this movie they don’t do that for some reason they just slide on icebergs likely getting risk of a serious injuried Like they jump on a iceberg on a sharp edge and get cut badly.

The same animators whi worked on Pinocchio worked on this scene, so they obviously reference their old work...
I love killer whales they're so big and strong
