1973 Cadillac Fleetwood Cold Start

  • Cold start of my 1973 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham on a 12 degree F morning. The car has the 472 cu in V8 (7.7L) and the original Quadrajet carburetor. I recently had true dual exhaust installed on the vehicle, but otherwise it is entirely stock. The car has 41K miles on it and is my current restoration project. I recently gave it a complete tune-up and had the carburetor rebuilt, so it is running pretty well. That said, it does have a valve tick...

In 1973, this is how everyone started and warmed up their cars. Carbureted engines would continue to be the standard for another 10+ years. I love adjusting and tuning carburetors.

Now it's time for a Cadillac story boys and girls. I have a 1972 Cadillac Calais Coupe double black. It's this car with just a different bumper and lighting system front and back. Other than that they're twins. Cadillac made one of the best Motors ever. This car and my car both have a 472. They said it was the quietest and smoothest motor of the 20th century believe it or not. My dad bought our car brand new at Hanley Dawson Cadillac on the corner of Rh and Ontario back in Chicago. It was garage kept for most of its life. We owned two cars and my dad was the only driver. My mom simply didn't want 2 drive. Well the Cadillac got caught and some bad weather and couldn't get into the garage it was called Chicago's blizzard of 1979. I was 11. The Caddy was buried in snow for 2 and 1/2 months. When we dug it out it started on the first try!!!!! Not even a jump-start was needed! Wonderful body great mechanical stuff but I'm ashamed to say it's a very generic late 1960s looking dashboard. Lincoln was doing so much more with their instrumentation. Fluid sliding speedometer gauges instead of idiot lights. But here's a fact about the 1973 that is really unknown. And this gentleman who posted the video of his awesome car should know that the super rare super expensive option was available only starting in 1973 which was a digital clock. Google it you'll find a couple online. And when did style go so out of style? Is everything a black white or gray SUV nowadays and the SUV sexy compared to the crossover. I'm tired of looking at Moon buggies I wish they would bring stuff like this back. green Interiors were really pretty we just stopped using Color. The world is Bland and boring and I think prior Generations were actually more fun and exciting. When this car was built the greatest generation of all time and they wete the ones buying theses. Not you man bun wearing Schmucks In a smart car. This is an awesome car and I'm glad you posted the video it was fun to see.

Beautiful car and the leather seats are sweet. Someone said they're not a fan of the color but there's nothing wrong with the color at all. It was one of many classy colors that Cadillac used then. Most cars now don't have many color choices, which makes this Caddy unique.

Beautiful car... Georgeous.. Ya know if you would have given the car 2 or 3 pumps of the gas pedal it probly would have started even better than it did.. Which was still awesome. But when you push the pedal down that not only sets the choke but the accelerator pump squirts gas into the intake so gas is right there and you don't have to crank the engine as long to suck gas out of the carburetor and into the cylinders to get the engine to fire. This helps on a really cold day..

Beautiful!. My favourite caddy is still the '72 Eldorado. I love American classics from the early '40s to late '70s. Pity was plastics became too common, (federal bumper laws) and emissions standards also ruined big cars to some extent as time went on. PS hi from New Zealand.

The colors of this one are, as follows: Viridian Green Firemist Metallic (order code=96), a $128.00 option, Dark Green cross-grain vinyl roof (order code=N), which was standard on the Fleetwood Brougham (for 1973, cross-grain vinyl was used on the standard Fleetwood Brougham while elk-grain vinyl was used on the new for '73 Brougham d'Elegance option and, for 1973 only, 2 sets of order codes were used; also, for those who don't know, the vinyl roof could also be deleted upon special order request) and Antique Dark Jade leather upholstery (order code=071), a $169.00 option.

I recently picked up a 1973 Calais Coupe which I didn't realize is pretty rare. A little old lady won it at a church raffle, eventually gave it to her grandson who did a lot of work and I recently took it in with only 31,000 miles. Wish I could say my paint is in as great a shape but overall the Harvest Yellow is a little faded but I may just keep it as is. I love the feeling of driving it down the block...I would repair any rust but otherwise leave it alone.

The car is really cool. The camera that shot the video... not so much so, unfortunately. Were you using an early 2010's era Android phone? I had one at that time, and it was horrible. Went and got my first iPhone 5c in Sept. 2013, and the improvement in my videos was such, that I never looked back. If you still own the car after all these years, maybe you can do a new video, if you've since upgraded your video recording equipment any. I'd love to see crystal clear video of the car.

I used to own a 73 fleetwood brougham d’elegance. These cars do not run dual exhaust. They have a muffler and a resonator. These cars also have no roof mounted dome lights. They are mounted in the front door panels C pillars and down by your feet, under the dash. Mine was dark brown with a beige padded top, with brown crush velour interior. The car weighs in at 3&1/4 tons. If I remember correctly. I used to laugh about only fearing another Cadillac or a freight train. People would ask me why I wanted to drive a car like this and I would tell them that I can put the money in the gas tank and have fun, or give money to the bank and be like everyone else. 😉I used to own a 72 coupe. Got hit in the rear end by an rx7. Did nothing to my car, but my trailer hitch split the front end of her car. I drove away. Wrecker took hers away. Massive car wins again. 😜

My parents bought this same model used in 1977 and it was the biggest piece of junk they ever owned. The engine would still sputter after the ignition was turned off. Those leather strap door handles kept coming off. The Metallic Silver paint of the car was already chipping off after 4 years. It did ride nice and it had a built in 8 track tape deck but mechanically it was a total lemon.

willmill77642 The factory pumps seem to wear quickly/poorly. If there is a stuck lifter a fresh pump sometimes sorts it out. A blueprinted one from MTS or Cad Company has nice even pressure output. I'm not saying it's a guarantee, but it's a cheap and easy place to start. No harm in a bulletproof oil pump either.
