He would always rave about the people there and how nice everyone was and the food that he got compared to anywhere else. I grew up in Dekalb Co. in the 60s and 70s. Atlanta was 1/4 the size it is now. Dude, you would have to drive for days to see the whole Metro area. The 13 county Metro area is now about 100 miles in diameter. Traffic sucks everywhere. 6.5 million people and cars everywhere. I think a lot of the people you talked too aren't really familiar with the history. The Ponce City Market you went to on Ponce was originally the Sears Roebuck bldg. The perimeter you rode on really was in the late 60s but is an inner city racetrack now. My uncle (God rest his soul) was an Air Force fighter pilot and he refused to drive through ATL. What does that tell you lol.

      @@Jrhynie I think you really have to live in both places, Atlanta and Athens, to get the feel of how they are so different. I love Atlanta but Athens is a special place. Once you get immersed in the music and restaurant scenes of Athens it’s magnificent. I lived there as a student and so it was a unique time in my life, a magical time. You could go to a big concert in Atlanta a pay a ton of money or go see the same performer in Athens the next night and might even get to meet them! And everything is 75% less expensive in Athens. I’m not sure either city is a fantastic tourist destination but both are home to me. I’ve only ever driven through Pennsylvania on my way to New York, never stopped to check it out. Maybe one day.

    Moved from ATL & GA after 15 years, great place to live, its getting better & there's a lot of hope, but also easy to get burned out, its becoming unaffordable unless you are bringing in good money, its becoming more toxic it feels like at times everyone is trying to become better than the other with the new money coming in.

    Besides the City of Atlanta the Suburbs are huge in ATL, All the way up North Metro to East, West & South Metro ATL. Kennesaw, Roswell, Alpharetta, Marietta, Acworth, Smyrna, Sandy Springs, Norcross, Duluth, Liburn, Tucker, Stone Mountain, Decatur, Lithonia, Ellenwood, Doraville etc.. I lived in ATL from 2004-2007 and most of my family lives all around ATL, it is a wonderful city but it fell all the way off now. Not the same as it used to be in the 90's and early 2000's.

      @Kathy I lived in Doraville in the 80s. It was country then. My friend used to ride up to the house on horseback up Winters Chapel Rd

      @Kathy no it's crazy now. I lived right by the winn dixie around 1982 and went to Kingsley elementary school. I drive by there every once in a while. It is definitely different. They tore my old house down.

      You mean before the influx of Katrina displaced folks? What could you be saying... 🤔

    • @Drunkensailorgaming
      @Drunkensailorgaming 2 года назад +1

      @@joshm9163 I know what Ben is saying. They did a lot of gentrification throughout Atlanta so a lot of spots that were bad were rebuilt and Atlanta added a lot of new things like the Beltline and Ponce Market. A lot of new construction brought in higher end homes and tore down a lot of the historic areas. With all that being said there isn't to many Atlanta natives in Atlanta. A lot of big business has moved in as well as the film industry so the people are different now. Most of this was before Covid. I live 50 miles north of Atlanta now and I haven't been through there since Covid except on the interstate. It's a great city and I love what Atlanta has become but it's nothing like what it was in the late 90s and early 2000.

    You need to come to the suburbs right outside Atlanta (but still technically part of Atlanta). Dunwoody, Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Duluth. It's more expensive but thats where a lot of people live as well, and you won't get the full picture without visiting there as well 👍

Always go into ATL for food etc. Next time you're in ATL and you want some good Cuban food, look up Papi's Cuban & Caribbean Grill on Ponce De Leon Ave. Great food. Only thing I hate about Atlanta is the traffic. Don't get stuck in rush hour going to the airport! (Shoulda ended that video right there @22:56, the beginning scene from Walking Dead).
