I just was shaken by hearing this piece at a Christmas concert in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria/Spain 2 hours ago. I could not avoid it, it touched me so deeply that tears flooded my eyes. I'm German and it is four us like a secret anthem regardless if one is protestant or roman catholic. Merry Christmas to everyone out there. 50 years ago my high school choir toured Europe. We spent a week in Freiburg, Germany as part of an international choirfest. The group that we were part of consisted of German people, Swiss people, French people, and us, the kids from the United States. Our director was from Paris, France. He spoke French, a little German, and very little English. This piece was our Wednesday morning warm-up/sight read exercise. Being an atheist should not have nothing to do with the capacity of appreciate the Beauty. As a catholic I love art in all forms regardless the religious convictions of the artists. Berlioz, Verdi, Brahms, just to mention 3 composers, were agnostics.
