I’ve been using this method since I bought my Zerowater - it works! I only swap/change filters ~every 1-1.5 years (I’m in Atlanta, GA - starting reading is ~56 out of the tap). Plus, you can get a 4-pack of ZW filters @ BBB for $32 (using 20% off coupon), bringing the price to $8 each or $29.99 (using $10 off $30 coupon), bringing price to $7.50 each. This will help a little, but if you watch the particulate level of the old filter, it will go from 6 to 25 to 150 very quickly, and at that point, you might as well just put tap water in. Further, as exnokiafanboy points out, bacteria can build up in the old one, and then get into the new one. Might save you a small fraction on filters, but not enough to justify the risk.

I agree... his advice is junk. I followed it, it really doesn't extend the amount of times you can use a filter. Mine failed at about 40, then a few uses later the second filter would catch up. Nice idea, but 👎. Plus the fishy smell would occur quite quickly when I swapped over the filters due to bacterial contamination as you pointed out. I wouldn't bother following this advice.

i think what he's trying to say is ... the 006 filter is still capable of filtering water and so lightens the load on the fresh, new filter ... therefore making the new filter last much longer. that the new filter gets stretched longer thanks to the water being filtered twice - first by the used, 006 filter. to me, that 006 filter is not going to filter much water before the stink is on big time!

Great idea in theory, but the filters really only are designed to work properly up to about 006-010 TDS. After that, they quickly reach critical failure and will not work. They will actually start releasing all the junk they filtered out, back into your water. So in reality, you won't get that many more fills out of your rotation system, because the rotated filter will reach capacity very quickly and you'll just be pouring bad water back into the new filter. If you want to do this 2 filter system and really get results, I'd recommend a filter at the tap first, and then into your zero pitcher. You can get a decent tap filter relatively cheaply and it will last longer than a used zero filter. Nonetheless, good video and way to think out of the box! Lol

    • @alucard2010
      @alucard2010 8 лет назад +14

not true. As we speak I just filled my small pitcher with my tap and it was filtered down to 92, I then poured that into my new pitcher and it reads zero. Compared to filtering 450 water which brings more life to the filter. once the old filter degrades then there is more Tds then the tap, its a simple test to avoid that situation

@Stein Mauer Typical cations may include calcium ion, sodium ion, potassium ion, magnesium ion, and typical anions may include sulfate ion, chloride ion, carbonate ion, and so on. The ZeroWater filter contains an ion exchange layer that replaces the cations with hydrogen ion, and replaces the anions with hydroxyl ion, which forms pure water H2O eventually.
The filter will work perfectly to deliver you pure water until it runs out either H+ or OH-. If the OH- is fully consumed first, then the anions remain in the water after filtering, and the cations are still replaced by the hydrogen ion (acid ion), finally resulting in acids, such as sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and carbonic acid. That's why the water tastes sour or acidic at the end.

I have a large zerowater dispenser. Our tap water in the Seattle area is 30-35, which is much better than average. My zerowater dispenser does indeed purify it down to zero, as advertised. I was able to fill the dispenser 63 (sixty-three) times before I had to replace the filter, which is better than advertised! But it was never because the TDS tester read 006. No, the tester would always read 000. The problem was the filter would plug up to the point where it would not fill with water anymore. So then I finally replaced the filter. I can’t complain too much as I did not expect to fill the dispenser 63 times (I recorded it on a taped piece of paper on top of the dispenser). The only other things I don’t like about the zerowater dispenser is that you have to push so hard on the button to fill a cup of water out of the zerowater tap, and that it is so slow to fill the cup.
Therefore I simply just rapidly fill up my cup with 30-35 grade city tap water. If I were more patient, or from an area with more impure water than the Seattle area, especially Arizona, Nevada, or North Dakota, then I would use the zerowater for sure. It’s that TDS tester that makes the zerowater worth the “price of admission”.

Zero filters are little disposable water softeners. You can recharge them with brine, just like recharging the resin bed in a softener. It's a pain and in my opinion it isn't worth it to save $10 because it takes some time to purge out the brine but it does work and I guess if you want to put in the effort it'll save money. They should make them where you could simply dump out the old contents and refill with fresh charcoal and resin but they are glued together. I've recharged my old filter and use it as a prefilter as in the hack in this video. The bacteria problem talked about by some people here isn't a concern. Here in my part of New Mexico the tap water runs about 425 so the filters don't last long, maybe a couple of weeks using it only for coffee water. Using the video's hack it doubles the life and using my brine hack and the double filter I get about 6 weeks per filter.

Tap water in north Texas exceeds 300ppm. So, not only does the filtered water quickly rise to 6ppm, the filters literally stop passing water through them. How we extend useful life: we draw water through our reefer’s filter, which takes the 300+ ppm water down to 150 - 180 ppm. Then that supplies our two pitchers, one of which is a 2-filter tank that supplies our coffee maker and cooking requirements.

We dual-stage filter using a Waterdrop filter (filters last several months) that cuts TDS in half, then fill the ZeroWater. Same difference, less fish smell. Also, we're studying the whole TDS thing. Most dissolved solids aren't bad for you, so the zero thing is usually overkill. And - ZeroWater filters use plastic, so there's the potential of BPS leaching. What we need is a targeted PFAS, BPS, lead, and TTHM filter.

After reading about smells,,,, I considered this. Yes growth of bacteria will sSstank, yet each time the water is done filtering, if in a fridge, might fridge air be getting to the top of the filter and absorbing odors like the Arm&Hammer? 2 months +, no hint of odor, not in fridge. Flow is still great since like you I thought to use pre filtered, like a fridge dispenser filter could also. Have to re plumb my place, so some zero wtr from hose bib then started with the drinking supply line. Using four 10" filters here to filter down to less than 1 micron. Zero Water for soups & coffee. lol

Also, couldn't the method promote a bacteria problem in the water, as I don't believe the TDS meter measures for or picks up bacteria?

@@mrsaye499 so this filter has 2 materials, first is activated charcoal, 2ed is those resin pebbles, they do the water softening to get the ppm to zero, now to recharge resin you need to make brine bath, boil about 3-4 cups of salt in a liter of water, wait for it to cool down a little bit, and put the filter in those water overnight, I did it many times, the only problem is that it only recharge the resin, not the activated charcoal, so eventually you'll have to replace the filter, what I ended up doing is I took off the top of the filter off, I threw out the resin and the charcoal, and got a bag of water softener resin for $10, filled it up with the new resin and squeeze the top back on, so now the water is back to zero, and every time it goes to 3-4 I give it a brine bath and it goes back to 0

My approach is a bit convoluted but basically I have a large jug of water out of the tap just standing for a good few hours to allow the chlorine to vapourise out then I filter that once through two separate Brita filter jugs and then finally run that water though the ZeroWater. It seems to be the right way to go to ensure water and filters actually last. As well all the filter jugs are kept full so bacteria can never get into the actual filters to replicate as no air. As a side-effect I find I drink a lot of water as I feel that I need to keep the train of water jugs moving.
In a very serious water shortage situation - since I am very big into prepping - it would seem conceivable to run my own (sterile out of the tubesteak) urine through an additional prior Brita filter before putting it through the other three filters. I have never tried that but the way things are going then all things are conceivable.
In any case the original from tap to Static water followed by two Brita filtering's then the final ZeroWater filtering works very very well and results in tasty tasty water. I'd like to put the ZeroWater inside the fridge but it is too big.

Shawn M no i haven't but I can't imagine their water quality. I'm simply pointing out how in my area these filters are not worth it. I have about 420ppm in my water which filters less than 8 gal. In USA the average water quality is around 200ppm which will last 25-40gal i think. In Canada the filters cost 17$ each so with the amount of water i drink it would cost almost 34$ a month to use this product to its potential. I can just buy good quality reverse osmosis water for cheaper, or invest in an actual reverse osmosis system. This defeats the purpose of these "cost effective" filters.

Ok I did this and yes will work for a short period of time. But at some point you will see with the old filter it will even get worse than tap water and then your good filter is going to even last a shorter time ! So your original filter won’t last very long after you replace it, and you’ll have to monitor it otherwise it defeats the purpose.

The filter fits just perfect and there is a nice seal. Because the jug shape for the water to be higher it makes the water spout work better. I was using the top half of the 7 gallon Zero water on top of the jug but had to fill it too many times; which was a pain. Probably will go to 3 gallon jug and spigot and buy an even larger Zero water container then try this. I was gone for 6 months doing "fun" military stuff, with my zero water pitcher empty with the same filter in it that was over a year old. I bought another meter to test the water after filtering, even today, it still shows 000ppm. The water never tasted great with zero water because it pulls minerals, but I'm wondering if few to none of the chemicals/pharmaceuticals are getting filtered out at all. I know I need a nice reverse osmosis system, but I unfortunately can't pay for it. Was tempted to run it through a different brands filter and have the water tested to see all what's in it. Chemical-wise anyway.

Absolutely brilliant. I have 520 tds water. I stopped using zero and carrying in store bought water because it would literally go to crap between 10 to 12 gallons. May as well buy water at 80 cents a gallon at that point. I've been trying to make homemade filters to knock out a chunk of the tds to make the zero water last longer and be cost effective again. I never even thought of this trick. As far as all the people talking about fishy water and stuff, yes, it actually is a problem. I let my filter go to far and all the sudden it tasted like I sucked sweat out of fat guys but crack. But that only happened once for me. Maybe some filters are not made as well or have as much resin. There are a ton of complaints about that if you search for it. But bottom line, zero water is hands down the best filter I've ever used but it fails way to quick with water as terrible as mine or worse, making it way to expensive. I wonder if running cheap vodka through it would work. You'd think ethanol would be small enough to get through, but kill bacteria.

always boil the water first BUT let it cool first before filtering it, that way nothing is alive in the water when it gets filtered

      Buy distilled bottled water.
Then filter it for drinking only.
Filter lasts forever ( kinda... ) and at 88¢ a gal. at Target, Walmart etc... for distilled water, it's a steal!!
Or buy a distiller to use in conjunction with the ZeroWater
      filter.
Filter the water before distilling and after so the distiller is easy to clean, then toss the filters.
      N E V E R drink unfiltered or still/dead water, spring water, etc...
Only DRINK distilled water that's also been filtered as well.
Still waters, mineral waters, spring waters, purified waters, tap waters etc. are very dirty with chemicals and inorganic minerals that go into the blood and deposit EVERYWHERE
JOINTS, KIDNEYS, BLADDER, LIVER, BRAIN, BLOODSTREAM ( knowledge is king, thank the Creator for the Internet!!! ).
As years go by these dead waters clog up our systems and it can take years to cleanse the deposits out and there are side effects once we start cleaning ourselves from the inside out.
But they are worth the benefits.
I am 64 and have drank junk poisonous water all my life because of LIES and disinformation.
I feel better now but like I said there are side effects.
      Fair well.
      Also please check out
      Earther Academy on RUclips.
      You will be amazed!!!

you only need 2 filters ever. one in the pitcher, one in the brine water.
brine water pulls the contamination off the plastic pellet surface. ion exchange.
just like a whole house water softener. dunk the filter in pitcher water for 15 mins. to pull extra brine out of the filter then one complete tank to finish. pour out the brine.
repeat when the tank pitcher is slowing down or at .006ppm.
    be well

Zero water is a filter and water softener all in one. It has charcoal and resin beads in it. The reason it's disposable is you don't wash brine through it like a traditional water softener in your basement so once the resin beads in the ZW system have been used up the system loses its effectiveness. I'm actually very curious if you wash a ZW filter with salt or something to wash the beads that it'll rejuvenate it. But it still with my water it only costs 30 for 2 filters which will last three months a piece so overall 30 bucks worth last about 6 months. Still Not a bad deal in my opinion.

I will take my clean water from zero and put it in those newer s'well metal bottles (very cool and many kinds) so I will have a no yuky plastic water bottles! ty again!!

I've seen this. The problem with the ZeroWater is that it does remove all TDS. It does this well. But drinking demineralized water isn't good for us. Removing the lead is good, but the regular minerals isn't. I would use this for water in my iron or steamer.

    • @deezeemb
      @deezeemb 2 года назад +1

It's not really demineralized water like what would come out of distillation. I don't know how they achieve the 0 TDS but there are many complaints about the resulting water PH and the filter using "acids" to achieve the results.
Unfortunately I bought this and now I need to test it to find out what comes out of it. If the PH is really 3 like some have claimed, it will have been a waste of money. It has many bad reviews.
In one experiment another filter using reverse osmosis did not achieve 0 TDS, but I would much sooner trust that water. I did worry this was to good to be true, when I was buying it. If you use it for your iron or steamer, you might destroy them if the PH claims are true.

Tried doing this awhile back with two ZW pitchers. When one of them got upwards of 003 or so, I transferred that water to the other pitcher with a brand new filter. Even though the new water read 000, it had a funky taste to it so I stopped. ZW’s been great the last couple years I’ve had it, but I will soon be purchasing a water distiller.

  • @alucard2010
    @alucard2010 8 лет назад

Why would that small pitcher still have a 000 after you put in a used filter of 006. I understand the concept. But can you just use the small pitcher first and dump it in the big pitcher without a filter. Then when the small filter hits oo6 you put it in the big pitcher with a new filter. the new filter will hit 006 overtime. Then switch the big filter to the small one and replace the big filter. rinse and then repeat

ZeroWater makers makes me believe that they have a trick up there sleeve. After a month of use the water started tasting SOUR/Acidic, used the TDS Meter and the readings are crazy 400-470 ppm.
My city water (South Florida) averages 180-200 ppm. How can it go up to 470 ppm ? I have done this test over and over, and on different days. Would this be because of the Dissolved Solids accumulated in the filter and at some point (wink wink 1 month) it releases everything out ?
Wondering if overflowing the filter has also something to do with this.

I have a third party TDS meter and always check it against the included one. Always the same results on both the tap and the filtered.

    • @sickofbeingsick3358

It is only a filter and at some point it will become compromised. It seems to me that Zerowater have worked out the compromisation point is when the TDS show 006. After this point, the filter is unable to work efficiently and the impurities build up quickly, hence the taste and smell. It makes sense to me tbh. I do wish the filters where a little cheaper, but apart from this it's a good water filtration system.

It's not just minerals but also lead and other impurities. As for minerals, if you eat a balanced diet, the minerals you would get from water are infinitesimal.
