No freaking joke, yesterday my water softener broke, the day this video came out. I look up how to fix the thing, watched the video a bunch and was able to learn how to fix it. AND NOW, that video keeps coming up again and again all day today. Spot on Ryan, spot on.
This is so painfully relatable. I watched a video by this guy Ryan George a month ago, and before I knew what was happening, he became like 60% of all my recommendations.
Alright, what do we know about the Ryanverse? •Everyone is Ryan George •Bigger mustache means more authority •Objects don't sound like they do on earth. Hi there. Hello. Your….your doors don’t sound like that? My mind is blown! Is that a Southern Hemisphere thing for them not to sound like that? Are you in the Southern Hemisphere?
This video reminded why I still want the 5-star rating system to return. Not able to differentiate from what you like, really like, dislike or really dislike can be annoying to me. Ironically, despite youtube removing that system from videos directly, they still use to for comments and some videos you search. So they are aware that system works.
Ryan: Is it going to be hard to come up with realistic sound effects for doors and car engines and hammers and stuff? Also Ryan: Actually it's going to be super easy. Barely an inconvenience.
A little worried about liking this video with the words "fix something" in its title, but showing Ryan some love is worth being bombarded with recommended DIY videos.
personally I'm fine with it, I frequently need to fix things with the help of tutorials, in fact my bathroom door is actually making weird noises right now lol
The algorithm is smarter than that. I get shown all the Pitch Meetings eventhough I'm not subscribed to Screenrant and they don't mention Ryan's name there anyway. The algorithm simple compares faces. It's kind of creepy, you can try it: Find a channel that has a redhead featured heavily in the videos, watch some and then watch yt conclude that you wanne see more redheads and show fairly unrelated content with redhaired people in it. Obviously it works with ethnicities aswell, which is kind of messed up, if you think about the implications.
As a person who enjoys DIY and fixing any problem in my house myself this is so true. Kept getting medical and first aid videos for like 4 months cuz i wanted to make sure i knew how to do CPR if ever i needed it
"how to do CPR" American much? So when you or any person you know suffers a heart attack you fix them with DIY methods? You know, in real countries, like developed 1st world countries, we've learned that stuff in school and for the next couple minutes we have emergency services and public health insurances. Lower death rates across the board. There, problem solved.
@@orcaflotta7867 sadly I was never taught how to do CPR, but I know that you have to disinfect the wound first and then apply the tape (Yes I change topics fast)
@@orcaflotta7867 Don't be rude. That has nothing to do with being American or not. Eddy said they watched to "make sure I knew how to", meaning they were doing so ahead of time. Regardless of whether you were taught how in school, updating is a great idea, and should be done regularly. The guidelines have changed many times in the past 10-15 years, so anything learned a few years ago may no longer be optimal. Ideally everyone should be taught first-aid, and take a new course every few years, but that doesn't happen in any country I know of.
@@MartinFinnerup "that doesn't happen in any country" No, right. Only in countries with a healthy public school system (which the USA doesn't have, afaik). And yes, I'm rude. @@cenciende9401 Maybe not for the standard video, but for things like tutorials (you know, a major premise of this whole video), it can be a great way to tell what is most likely to work so that you're not just wasting your time.
@@KingNedya and when you're looking for trailers and other sorts of informative videos. Total garbage and clickbait are first defended against with the dislike bar, since RUclips doesn't care about what those videos claim they are.
@@KingNedya It wasnt as useful as people portray it to be. Opinions of other people only help when the issue is simple. If it gets even slightly complicated, dislike ratio becomes useless. Diy videos implying they produce "infinite energy" is most obvious example, they usually end up with good amount of likes since people know nothing about electrical engineering or thermodynamics.
This is why ever since I got myself into a nice place with youtube algorithms I always open new youtube links/onetime things in incognito mode to avoid messing up my youtube recommendations.
RUclips is like someone who doesn’t know what to get someone for Christmas, and only focuses on the last thing they remember the person they’re getting a gift for _vaguely_ liked.
I ended up with quite a lot of Hello Kitty stuff this way 😂 Brought myself a couple of things, next thing I know everyone is buying me Hello Kitty merch! Then they had the cheek to tease me for having so much HK stuff and I'm just like "I brought none of this..."
It is a perfect example of the RUclips algorithm. One day someone buys you a thing cos you mentioned you quite liked a thing. Everyone sees that thing on your desk. Three years later, desk is overrun by many iterations, versions and rehashes of that thing. Thus you now have a reputation for *really* liking that thing 😁
Scarily accurate representation of not just the YT algorithm, but pretty much ANY modern advertising! Absolutely awesome! Oh no! Now I am getting nothing but videos about fixing things, algorithms & people with the name George or Ryan!
I find it especially annoying with advertising when they start advertising to you first after you bought something and the keep advertising that thing a lot. No, algorithm, I don't need another TV of the exact same model I bought 2 weeks ago.
"Did a full five minutes of work so I feel like I deserve this" I have never felt so personally attacked, but also I'm not going back to doing work I've decided.
That's the idea. If companies can't see how shit a video is, they can't tell the elves at YT to not put their adds in it, therefore more money for Google.
I mean, here you can tell right away: the hinges made a "boioioioooing" immediatly. Adn that is different from the "yipyipyipyip" noise, and also better, I decided. So, there you have it, this tutorial is legitimate!
Exactly - RUclips's whole reasoning for getting rid of the dislike button was concern over dislike farming. But now we're all more susceptible to like farming. Great job...
"now you can't tell if a video is bad or not" I know he is saying it sarcastically, but it's true, by removing dislikes, you simultaneously devalue the likes
At least like counts are usually consistent enough that you can get a decent idea by comparing it to 1/10th the video views. So this one with twice that is probably pretty well-liked.
@@cenciende9401 While there were trolls who did that, I feel like most people who used the dislike button did so in order to... well... show that they disliked it...

As a fellow comedy writer, I’ve been struggling to find the best way to poke fun at RUclips’s algorithm, and you sir, have hit the hinge on the head. Bravo.
Hey Ryan, the way you do dealing with social media in this, and i've seen you do it before in the skit about waking up and checking your phone, by having the character in the black space talking to a personification of the website, I think that is really clever. Films and TV never do a character using the internet in an interesting way, it's always really boring in films. But you have managed to find a way of visually representing it that is original and works really well, and that is an impressive achievement that deserves praise Also i think you are great
For Ryan's issue, RUclips needs a "Nonce" box to check so that the Algorithm doesn't use that video for recommendations, like the "it's a gift" or "don't use for recommendations" box on other sites. RUclips often wants to recommend videos to me that I've already seen and liked and commented on. I'm old enough to remember when they would at least gray out the thumbnails of the subscription videos you'd seen. It was back when we all wore an onion on our belt, which was the style at the time...
@@pamimoo I don't remember the grayed out videos. At least they have the red watch line for awhile after you've watched the video, but I end up using the like button to track what I've watched. Which is probably a double edged sword.
@@TadeuszCantwell same, liking a video is the main way I know whether I've seen something yet or not. particularly useful when binging videos from a single channel.
@@Ashalmawia Yeah if I'm watching a lets play I like at the end to keep track and I can pick it up a week later. If you start watching a video and you've seen it, then move forward to a new one, the red watch line gets reset to the start.
@@TadeuszCantwell yes, and also the red line can be at 100% when really you just clicked on a video for a second and then clicked back hoping to save it for later. as long as I don't like it yet I know I didn't fully finish the content yet.
This is why I go into an incognito tab to look up tutorials. I made the mistake of not doing that once, and my RUclips page was filled with videos about cleaning laundry machines for ages....

Everything in this video is so true. An hour or so before seeing this, I thought to myself "Why is RUclips recommending me same stuff over and over again?"; and also, it was SO wrong to disable the dislikes. These really are the two big flaws of RUclips.
I've actually replaced a broken door handle in my wife's SUV, and changed the brake pads and cleaned calipers on my bike, all from RUclips University. If my car ever doesn't start because of a bad fuel pump, I'm ready for it as RUclips unloaded a lot of ChrisFix videos on me.

I ordered grain for the horses at work for the first time this week and I’ve already seen ads for feed companies. Didn’t look up grain online or anything, just used my cell to call the company.
The real humor hidden here is that after watching this video all the way through and giving it a like… RUclips has been nonstop trying to get me to watch it again on my homepage for weeks. A lot of other Ryan George videos but the one that keeps popping up at the top of the feed every day is this same video again and again… and you know what, RUclips was right I did enjoy watching it again.
this is so true that I have thought about making a burner account JUST for searching up non entertainment videos, because watching one tutorial/ tech video absolutely destroys my recommended for weeks.
Or launch youtube in your web browser using incognito mode and you don't need to bother to create a burner account and you can keep your account connected
Radounae is spot-on. Another way is to go back and delete videos from your history and tell RUclips to pause search history. I do that whenever YT starts recommending too many similar videos.
Just delete the video from your history. I've done this when I left myself logged on at work, the night shift guy watched all kinds of shit I wasn't interested in, and my algorithm lost its mind. I deleted the 30 or so videos and never again saw a single recommendation that seemed like it stemmed from those videos.
If you dislike the video and then remove it from your History then you should stop getting so many combo lock videos, but you will still forever get one or two.
This is how I feel about personalized ads everytime I order something online. You just bought a new fridge? Well take a look at these fridges, they're right up your alley. You can never have enough of these puppies.

The first time I got a flat tire I was out in the middle of nowhere, but luckily I barely had some cell reception (this was back in the 3g days) so I was able to look up how to change a flat tire on a Ford F-150. I remember it took like 5 minutes for the stupid ad to load up so I could watch the video.
Yeah, I've noticed more and more lately how fickle the algorithm is. It changes so quickly. If I watch true crime videos for a day, that's all the algorithm shows me. It doesn't matter if I spent the last two weeks watching music production tutorials. For some reason, the thing that I watched most recently MUST be more interesting to me. It seems like it really needs to take number of views over time into account.

Somewhat difficult to tell if these tutorials are legitimate or not without that dislike button huh
RUclips is just getting dumber dumber
That's the idea. If companies can't see how shit a video is, they can't tell the elves at YT to not put their adds in it, therefore more money for Google.
Look at the views:likes ratio. Not perfect by any means, but better than nothing
I mean, here you can tell right away: the hinges made a "boioioioooing" immediatly. Adn that is different from the "yipyipyipyip" noise, and also better, I decided. So, there you have it, this tutorial is legitimate!

That is me "working from home".
But you have managed to find a way of visually representing it that is original and works really well, and that is an impressive achievement that deserves praise
Also i think you are great
For Ryan's issue, RUclips needs a "Nonce" box to check so that the Algorithm doesn't use that video for recommendations, like the "it's a gift" or "don't use for recommendations" box on other sites. RUclips often wants to recommend videos to me that I've already seen and liked and commented on. I'm old enough to remember when they would at least gray out the thumbnails of the subscription videos you'd seen.
