    I love Cinderella and I'm so tired of the narrative going around that she is a "weak" female character. She is a victim of constant abuse in her own home but is still able to remain a kind person and keep her own spirits up until finally she finds her way out of the situation. How is that weak? A person does not need a weapon or a sassy tone to be strong.

    One thing I liked about the live action is the fact that instead of keeping the step mother just evil and nasty, they sort of gave her some motive behind her actions. She is just a mother thinking of her own daughters first. Doesn't make her right, but I really liked that added layer of characterisation.

    • @starshield7

      @ZS-dr7bi It would make more sense to say that she sees her daughters as accessories to a glamorous image of her own selfish vision for her life instead; her sense of motherhood, family, her husband and daughters, glamor, etc, all used to boost selfish narcissism/ vanity.

It has heart, and it feels like a film that respects the source material enough to play around creatively with it rather than fully change and subvert things. Ella is a wonderful character and is fully treated like a worthy heroine who doesn't need to fight or reject love to be deemed "strong". She's one of the most inspirational heroines out there. Expanding on the prince's role was a big win for me too, in just a few scenes the script/acting/directing managed to show us Kit as a very kind and gentle individual who's willing to learn. I particularly loved the scenes with his dad too, we got to see healthy love and sincere communication between these two men, which was wonderful to see. I always cry in the king's last scene, it's such a touching moment. Glad you watched this one! It was lovely seeing your reactions ✨

    What happened here is whoever wrote this version went and read as many versions of Cinderella as they could get thier hands on. I love Cinderella, and I can pick out moments from as many as 10 different versions, and it’s so amazing and beautiful.
    When you look through a bunch of versions of a classic story, you begin to see what makes them they same, where it’s heart is. The versions you don’t like are the ones that feel “off” because they lost the heart of it.
    The heart of Cinderella is an abused young woman who is strong enough to still care about other people, and to choose something for herself that is denied by her abusers, even though it is small. And then when someone sees her for all she is, she accepts it and walks out the door, even as her abusers are still calling her names and trying to pull her down. Cinderella is such a powerful story when done right, and this one did it right.
    This version strung together everything lovely about Cinderella, and it makes me so happy. I am glad you got to see it.❤

    • @jaimicottrill2831
      @jaimicottrill2831 Год назад

      So.....she was a literal child? Lol, it might be that there was no standard shoe size back when Cinderella was written, people used to get their shoes made for them. So 2 women with the same size feet may not necessarily fit into each others shoes. Plus, you know, they were made by magic!

    • @ANM78
      @ANM78 Год назад +9

      @@jaimicottrill2831 It has nothing to do with her being a child
      It's mostly comming from Chinese culture. Cinderella's original tale is traced down to China in the 9th Century. For a long time in China, it was a cultural thing for women to have the most tiny feet ever. They used to put special bandages and shoes while growing up in order to deform the foot anatomy and keep it very tiny (with major bone structure damages though...).
      This might have had an influence for the fairy tale and the small shoe size remained 😊
      These took place for thousands of years and were only stopped officially in 1912, so very recently

Also that scene where Ella blurts out "pumpkins and lizards" and the Kit is very confused and amused kinda remind me of the animated movie Cinderella 3 where the Prince runs through the palace frantically and the King tries to stop him and asks "what happened???" and the Prince goes "TALKING MICE SAID SHE IS NOT THE ONE" to the horror of the King😂

    Wonderful commentary as always, y'all. And Stella, your words spoke so strongly to me as a writer -- I love people (and characters) who love things too. And Ella here is such a wonderful example because she is not a weak person -- she is simply a kind and forgiving one who is also quietly, tremendously strong. A gorgeous live-action adaptation and the costumes were just sublime. The actors were all lovely as well, and I especially appreciated that Kit is his own character -- the scene of him lying curled up beside his dying father was so moving (and we hardly ever see male characters given those moments of vulnerability. I also want to shout out to the great Derek Jacobi, a frequent Kenneth Branagh actor, who was especially wonderful in Branagh's superb "Henry V." Cheers!

It establishes Ella's family life before her mom passed away, then her going through the process of her father passing, then having to live through her stepmother and stepsisters' bullying while maintaining "Have Courage, and Be Kind", I also like that they introduce the prince very early on instead of popping him up when Ella's at the dance -- still my ultimate favorite live action Disney Princess movie

    I love this Cinderella .She is super nice and you are right in saying that that is not boring but so refreshing in seeing. Many people think that a girl needs to be spicy or naughty in order for her to be the love interest cause that is the most desired girl, and that's not true. I love that she is sweet and kind and pure hearted. We need that in society more and she influences the young girls to be more like that. That you don't have to be bad in order to be loved by another person or have good things happen to you. Yes she went through a dark time but the sun finally did rise, and she kept her integrity all the way through. I love that. This is my second favorite Cinderella. My first favorite is Rodger's and Hammerstein Brandy's Cinderella. I don't know if you saw that one but I do love that she is super sweet as well and it's a musical and I love musicals a lot. I find myself singing and listening a lot to the soundtrack. As a matter of fact I loved Brandy's Cinderella so much that my quinceanera dress and party was themed after her. The decorations were even blue like her dress. Of course back then 20 years ago the dresses were white. When I moved down south and years later went to church I learned that the new style of dresses for quinceanera's were in colors. If I would have chosen a color it would have been this Cinderella's blue cause it's my favorite color. But if you haven't watched Brandy's Cinderella I would highly recommend it. She is many's favorite Cinderella as I heard.

    This is one of my favorite Disney Live-action remakes and although I enjoy the original animated _Cinderella,_ what made the live-action remake good and different from the rest of the Disney Live-Action remakes/reimaginings (e.g. Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King, Pinocchio, Peter Pan & Wendy) released before and after _Cinderella (2015)_ is that it paid homage to the original 1950 animated classic while creating its own story and inserted deeper insights about life such as Cinderella's mother to a young Ella on _"Have Courage and be Kind"._ Plus, the direction by Kenneth Branagh, the production design, and the performances of Lily James, Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett, Stellan Skarsgård, and Helena Bonham Carter were by far my favorite highlights of the film
    Finally, although you will be doing _Snow White and the Huntsman_ and _Huntsman: Winter's War_ in the next 2 weeks you should react to the rest of the Disney Live-action films at some point on the channel. _The Jungle Book (2016), Aladdin (2019), Beauty and the Beast (2017),_ and _Pete’s Dragon (2016)_ are extremely good Disney live-action remakes especially the former two and the latter films so please give them a chance

    Have you guys seen the Jungle Book live action? It's not as joyous as the animated version but definitely does a better job portraying animals than the Lion King live action. It's severely underrated too (Kaa is the best part of the whole film)

    • @marslara
      @marslara Год назад +3

      Yeah there actually are quite a few good live action films that transform the story in such a way that they keep the imagination from the original while still standing totally on it's own. The lion king was such a disappointment from what it could have been if they recognized how the art really existed in the movie. I think it would have served them to take a more surreal approach similar to the jungle book adaptation.

    If you look behind the scenes, you will see that the ballroom was built piece by piece at the 007 Stage, it's such a massive set up, with the realistic grand stair case, even the chandelier with 2000 plus lit candles, it's awesomely very detailed, even the extras they were all dressed up very intricately according to a certain period of dressing classically. They even used 100 pieces of Swarovski valuable vintage jewelries. I thought some of them were green-screened, but the majority of them are completely real, and the film itself is wonderful. It's my favorite live-action Disney princess movie.

    This one and the Jungle Book are my favorite live actions. It maintains the essence of the story, without major changes, without trying to humanize and justify villains (one of the things that made me HATE malevolent).
    They did an amazing job with the design, costumes and scenery to reflect the beauty of the classic story, without being too over the top or too cartoonist and also, using a simple idea but making it very very wholesome.
    And that dress is forever iconic.

      Malificent doesn't "humanize or justify the villain", it reframes the story to make her not the villain. Also this movie actually *does* humanize the villain. Which is not an inherently bad thing and I've never understand why people act like it is.

    YES! Im so glad you loved it!! In college I was suffering with a lot of depression and trying my best to hide it and be kind to everyone who treated me awful, Then my mom and I went to see this movie in theaters and it just felt like the world was lifted off my shoulders, and im certainly not confident enough to compare myself with cinderella lol but i felt so seen, like I COULD choose a different way than being treated badly, like some magic was real and I had a right to have it. I just cried and couldnt stop smiling, and I sang the Dilly Dilly I love you song a lot after we left the theater. This movie just is so important and well done. Also, Im also really glad Stella and Hayley are apart of the channel, it just feels like theyve always been here haha thank you guys for bringing them on!! Love all four of your thoughts and reactions. ❤

    I saw this movie once, the day it came out when I was 16. After rewatching it, I think of it that the story was very different to the animated one but I loved it! I loved seeing more of Ella’s backstory and being able to understand what made her stepmother be so cruel towards her. I also loved that the prince has met Ella in the forest and they reunite in the ball because in the animation , the prince just randomly sees this beautiful girl “Cinderella” and has already made the choice for the right one. I must say, this is actually one of my favorite Disney movie remakes!:)💙

    This is my absolute comfort film! If I ever have a bad day I just put this on and instantly feel better! This is probably also the only live action remake that actually improved on the story while staying true to the spirit and feel of the original. The rest of them feel like soulless cash-grabs that, while entertaining, aren’t really any better than the OGs and often times actively worse. Maybe it’s because this is the first one and because ot was succesfull they decided to remake all of their classics without putting any real effort in.

    An interesting fact to take in was the scenes where she wore the blue dress, her waist being that small wasn’t cgi, the corset she wore was actually that small. She said it herself that she couldn’t really breath properly because of it. It wasn’t the correct size for her. (Corsets aren’t suppose to hurt or stop you from breathing but are suppose to be comfortable.)

    It's a common misconception that Disney based the animation on the Brothers Grimm fairytale. It was actually based on Charles Perrault's 1697 Cinderella. That version includes the fairy godmother and the pumpkin that are not in the Grimm version, and does not include some of the darker elements; such as the stepsisters cutting off their heels & toes to make the slipper fit and them having their eyes pecked out by birds (though they did have a brief argument where Drizella threatens to scratch Anastasia's eyes out).
    The ball gown was made with more than a dozen fine layers of fabric, a corset and a petticoat. 9 versions of the gown were designed, each with more than 270 yards of fabric and 10,000 crystals placed one-by-one. It took 18 tailors and 500 hours to make each dress. Additionally, it took 16 people and 550 hours to complete the silk-organza, hand-painted wedding dress. When the crew were photographing Lily James in the dress she stood too close to an electric heater and it caught on fire. The top layer had to be redone because only one wedding dress was created due to time and budget constraints. Also, Lily James said that the iconic glass slippers actually didn't fit her, so instead they were added into the movie via CGI.
    When the Fairy Godmother introduces herself to Cinderella, at first she says "I'm your Hairy Dogfather", which is probably an intentional reference to Sirius Black from Harry Potter.
    I seriously suggest reacting to most of the recent live action remakes. I personally like Aladdin, Beauty and The Beast, The Jungle Book and The Little Mermaid. The Lion King is always listed as live-action when in fact it's all CGI and I don't consider Maleficent a remake, more like a retelling from a different perpective (I suggest the sequel btw). But this one is probably my favourite. The casting, the writing, the direction, the costumes and the cinematography are just perfect.
    For an older remake I also suggest Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997) starring Brandy Norwood, Whitney Houston, Whoopi Goldberg and Victor Garber.

    This movie is so special because of all the effort put into it behind the scenes! They actually used CGI very sparingly, limiting it to just the magic, the animals, and to enhance some of the locations. The lizard footmen and goose coachman wore prosthetics, the elaborate gold pumpkin-carriage was an actual carriage they custom-built, and the chandeliers in the ballroom were specially designed for this movie and ALL those candles were real and lit by hand the old-fashioned way!
