  • On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will be comparing the performance of the 45 Colt to the 44 Special and the 44 Magnum on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points (winner takes all), for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 10 yards. In 1982 I was nearly murdered and was shot twice with a 44 special. Nasty Flesh wound in the leg and a paralyzing wound in the neck. It went in through my shirt collar and almost exited under my shoulder blade. It has a heck of a knockdown.. It's a miracle. I'm still alive. God's not done with me

    In my opinion the 44 special was under-developed by commercial ammunition suppliers. I ran an ammo business that supplied commercial grade and cowboy ammo all across the country. I developed and then offered a "max load" 44 spl. that I used in IHMSA matches, rather than using 44 mag. Starline brass being more malleable was used exclusively and using slow burning powder was essential, yielding velocities of 1150 fps (240gr.) 300 fps behind that of standard 44 mag loads, with less recoil in all bullet weights.

      I wound up having to order adjustable rings to get the crosshair where I need it, but I haven't had the time to get it properly loc-tited+adjusted+sighted in, so right now I take it out sometimes and aim it using sorcery; turns out if you have a rail instead of a rear sight, you just center the front sight on the rail and then dip it down slightly past where you can see it... then you can still peel milk cartons like bananas within 50 feet, or leave neat circular holes in old engine blocks, hahaha.

    I have 45 colt in two wheel guns and one Winchester rifle. Very happy with this caliber and……for the rifle, I bought a box of Buffalo Bore 325 grain ( cannot remember the fps but it was fast). Went back and bought two more boxes. What a combo at least for me.

    My buddy nicknamed me "45 AARP" because I carry a 45ACP daily, hunt with a 45-70, and carry a 45 Colt as backup when hunting. I told him those 3 cartridges had saved many lives and will be around long after I'm gone. Besides they remind me of myself anyway. Old, fat and slow, but when I do get there it's serious business.

    Those 45 LC handloads from that short Blackhawk gives a whole new meaning to #catchcleanandcook, reducing it to a single step.😮
    The sand test is physics defined. Momentum trumps KE in that scenario. Those slow bullets pushed the sand out of the way, whereas the magnum "pounded sand" and the sand pounded back.
    If you decide to do Helium again, always remenber to take several normal air breaths between hits.

    First time I have seen your videos! I am impressed, very well done. I am a fan of all 3 cartridges, that being said, you can't go wrong with any of them. I have been loading my 45 Colt (NOT LONG COLT!) to very much the same level as the 44 mag and found the felt recoil is not as sharp. I pretty sure it is because the Colt load is lower pressure> Thanks!!!

    I always laugh at people that will talk crap on the 44 Special or 45 Colt or 38 Special, but then brag about the 45 ACP or 9mm. Not really that much difference in reality. People laugh at me for carrying a 38 and say it is worthless until you ask them if they want to get shot with it. Then ...silence.

    • @dynomitejec
      @dynomitejec 2 месяца назад +2

      I love my .38 too but I've shot a plastic ear pro muff, just the piece that covers the ear, and it bounced off multiple times I even reloaded before realizing they were hitting the dirt bank it was laying in front of. It banged it up but never went through. Also that's with 158 lead round nose, i still carry it though it's accurate.

    • @lil1941
      @lil1941 2 месяца назад

      Young people today think that the 38 Special is a joke. Yet the overwhelming majority of people shot by police throughout the 20th century were killed by the 38 Special. In most cases the police were using standard lead round nose bullets or even semi wadcutter bullets. Hollow Point bullets were used to a much lesser extent by Police and only late in the century. In other words the 38 Special is actually up to the task. Don't forget about +P being available.

      Just playing around with water jugs the bullet choice makes a difference, but the results with .357 Magnum are much more catastrophic than 9mm Luger or .38 Special.

    • @dynomitejec
      @dynomitejec 2 месяца назад

      I just had to come back to this cause I've got some 124 grn lead round nose reloads for my 9mm, I should find something plastic and rounded to try them on to see if they bounce too. The main reason lead round nose worked in .45s was the mass it had but they still bounce off stuff. Once I had an old surplus tinpot helmet (I know I'm stupid for this) that me and my brothers tested, we shot it with 9mm once .40sw once and .45acp each fmj (even using a true colt my brother has our great grandfather's combat commander badass piece of history) but nothing went through they all three bounced off, then we shot it with a .20ga with birdshot once and it might crumple a skull in the helmet but didn't go through either it just slung it. Then I'm pretty sure it got slapped with a .44 an ak and more that it didn't stop. But the three main carry pistol rounds for most Americans stopped on an old Vietnam Era helmet. Dang sorry for the book. 😅 I guess I should add we were only like 10 feet away or maybe less for all shots.

    I pulled the 180 gr. JSP projectiles off some Remington rounds rated at 1625 FPS and replaced them with some 185 gr. hard cast led. They splintered a 3" pine tree. Did the same with some 45 ACP rounds rated at 1080 FPS and got some serious penetration also.

    I went to a pistol Match in Bermuda in 83 and accidently double tapped the 1911 and sent the second round into the 4x4 beam overhead and hit the silhouette in the brain pan. I would imagine the RNL had something to do with it. Didn't place well. The command gave us a 50 rd box each to practice with. The other guys, Marines, SEALs, and Bewees (Bermuda Police) did much better...
    We went back to fixing the P3s as we were in a hot scenario with Honduras, Grenada and such going on...

    One additional aspect of ammo consideration that you might want to throw into the mix; cost. Magnum ammo is often significantly more expensive that non-magnum loads. Additionally, I'd like to see a video on reloading, using different powders and the flash/residue for a particular caliber. The effects of minimal charge (squib) to a hot-load. Ever think of doing a recoil graph video? As always, enjoying your videos!!!

    • @logangodofcandy
      @logangodofcandy 24 дня назад

      A heavy, slow bullet will have high momentum. In fact, a 230 grain 45acp and a 125grain 357 have similar momentum, but the 357 will have twice the ft lbs energy. Momentum causes penetration.
      Another aspect of penetration is high sectional density, meaning how much of the weight is behind how much surface area. The more the bullet is like a spear than a ball.
      A heavy, slow, long bullet will get extreme penetration. Lighter metals like copper will make the bullet longer. A larger caliber will create a bigger hole. 45 colt at 300 grains in all copper will create a big long hole all the way through a bear.

    Hello Greetings from the UK.....Great Video! back in the 90's before they took away all our pistols in Britain, I had a 45 long colt Ruger Blackhawk which I bought very cheap off an older guy, had masses of fun with it, very accurate with lead semi wadcutter hand loads....then I got a copy of the Hornady reloading book and discovered their 250 grain hollow point and 2400 powder and the massive muzzle flashes! great gun and cartridge.
    A great timebacj then, we are all stuck with pistol calibre rifles and 10/22 Rugers etc now...... no more pistols not quite the same fun! beware people...... Trust me every time I visit the USA I'm off to a range somewhere.... Cheers...Trev

    It looks like you have reinvented my own .45 Colt load, which was itself an XTP modification of Elmer Keith's preferred load. Of course in a Colt SAA it blew up the gun and took off his trigger finger. As you say, in specific guns. Very effective on deer under 50 yards, especially when fired from a carbine,.

    Factory loads are one thing. The 45 Colt and 44 Special are old, so lots of old guns exist for them. SAAMI keeps the pressure very mild. The 44 Mag was designed from the ground up for magnum level pressures. If gun strength isn't a problem, the 45 Colt can do anything the 44 Mag can do, but at lower pressure. At equal pressure, the 45 Colt will always win.
