I'm sold, like the light and mostly handle placement. Need this in my Makita toy box. I often do projects that do not require high torque and my Makitas give me a since of elegance and refinement. Kind of like cars, I got one that does 0-60 almost as fast I can say 0-60. Then I have another car though not as fast but a pleasure to drive. I view my tools the same, they do identical jobs with different experiences.
Right tool for the job. Luckily I collect tools and not cars. I cant afford a garage big enough if I was collecting cars. 😂
I love every Makita drill you test out. And it makes me appreciate my xdt16 even more. Got it on OfferUp for $100 about 4 years ago. It’s showing no signs of breaking down at all. What a tank
Other than some refinements, the tools is still very relevant with their newer impact drivers today.
I will say this, my husband loves doing wood working and he uses Makita power tools. I looked, and he uses the XDT-19, as well as an XDT-11. I have also used both to do projects. Especially the 19 is so small, smaller than the Milwaukee M12 brushless one he also has. It is quite powerful. I know he uses it because he enjoys the 19's quiet operation and because it is comfortable to use. Yet it is still quite powerful. I would imagine in the trades, if you are going to use the tool everyday, for hours and hours, comfort would be a priority (and less noise).
It certainly does factor in depending on what trade. I can imagine that some jobs you might prefer the raw speed and power but not everything has to be that way.
@@TinkerWithTools I would agree with that.
Lucky husband
XDT16 may be my favorite tool I've ever used. And its been used to death. But now I'm mosly on Milwaukee. Would be nice to see a Surge 2.0 impact have that same handle placement and controls on the rear. Assuming Makita doesnt have a patent on that.
I am hoping they will do Surge Gen 2 at the next pipeline now that DEWALT released their version.
I own makita and the reasons are makita has great ergonomics, light weight, and they just have a great trigger response. I tried the Milwaukee, dewalt, flex, ryobi and so forth. It’s either under powered or has to much. I personally don’t care about speed; I care not to crack the wood I’m working on. Good video
So i have had this drill for over a year and a half in the repair/remodel industry and its awesome. (i bought the japanese version) The modes are still unmatched, balance is better, and I love the light. I dont even carry a light with me almost ever anymore since I can just use the ring light. (i bought the japanese version)
Glad to hear you’ve had such a great experience with it!
I bought the xdt19 because of your videos. I just bought into the Milwaukee line due to makita never having decent sales. But the xdt19 feels way better than my new Milwaukee impact. And the mode switch it better being right above the trigger. They should have put the mode switch like that on the new Milwaukee stubby instead of the double click
Yeah that stubby mode selection doesn’t feel like an improvement. From what I understand it had to be done to increase the power.
Great stuff. Thank you for this update (and thank you for pointing me here after I watched the Japanese-eBay-purchase review from 2023). I will let you know if I pull the trigger (same pun, different video!) on buying the XDT20 via Amazon. The deal seems too good to be true but worth trying. Fingers crossed.
Love this impact. I got it in yellow
From Japan I would say from what I have seen on TTC they are stronger than the Chinese version
@harlanborders943 not disputing their testing but I think in most real world use you would be hard pressed to find a meaningful difference.
@@TinkerWithTools ofc, they are absolutely the same tool
@ yes sir have to agree I can’t tell much difference between the 13,14, and 16 . The 14 and 16 seems a little lighter bit faster mostly use the 14 .
Got mine in green from Japan more than a year ago. So ergonomic great controls and ring light. Replaces a flashlight in a pinch
The ergonomics and refinement is top notch for me.
I agree Makita in hand feels great. I have Milwaukee, DeWalt but usually I have a Makita in my hand. Unless it’s a small job or having to carry drill and impact then M12 fuel. Put both in my nail pouch head up the ladder
The M12 is nice for that.
You Nailed It 👍 I always loved Makita Impact drivers , they are so nice to use I have the XDT19 and it's Awesome 👌, but at this point it's almost 2025 I think Makita really Needs to Boost the Power in their impact drivers it's getting a little ridiculous . And they need to Stop shrinking their handles , I have XL hands and 2 yrs ago I bought their 40v Hammer Drill and Impact Driver Kit and had to Return it because the Impact Driver handle was too small for my hand , I wanted it pretty bad but just couldn't deal with that handle All Day Long , well that's My 2 cents anyway 🤷♂️ . Great Video..... 👍 🖖
The handle is something that it definitely isn’t as comfortable as the XDT19 for me. But it’s still just big enough that I don’t stop using it.
Nothing with 1/4 drive needs more power, we have impact wrenches for that.
What about people with small hands, how are they supposed to hold a thick handle, you could always wrap the handle in something to make it feel more comfortable.
@dogbreath6974 for me it's not the thickness of the hand but more that the space between the tool head and the battery base has gotten shorter over the years. I think the handle is still comfortable, I would just wish it to be a few mm's taller.
@dogbreath6974 Its Not about the Thickness , for Me it's about the Length of the Handle , Makita needs to Stop Shrinking them in Height ...👍🖖
Согласен. Мне не нужна большая мощность. Нужно много режимов и удобство а использовании.
Поэтому Милуоки 2853 и поменял на 171.
Well said.
Love my XDT16
Amazing content 👌
Thank you 🙌
Thanks for your review. TWT - What would be your choice for 3 inch screws?
Honestly performance wise they will all be roughly the same. I would tip to the XDT20/TD173 if cost weren’t a factor but if you wanted to save a little money I would just pick up the XDT19.
I’m using an XDT13, it was quite a bit cheaper. Definitely like the light on this new model though. I will have to find some way to justify the spend 😂😊
Is there a difference between the XDT20T and the XDT20Z? I can't seem to see what it would be, but they are different prices.
The XDT20T is a kit with two batteries. The XDT20Z is a bare tool item. They have the same impact driver.
Another Winner from a Winner, ‘Tinker With Tools !!!! ‘👍👊🤝🇺🇸😀
Thanks George!
My first Makita impact driver killed bits and 1/2" adapter unless i noticed i had to use higher quality bits and adapter. So being 10 % -20 faster is a difference but under 10% its ergonomics and features. And the Japanese know how to improve in small steps 😊
Yeah I just don’t think you are buying Makita is your focus is speed and power. You buy it for the ergonomics you mentioned
I buy it for the repairability and ergonomics. I support Makita over piece of shit companies like TTI and SBD. Japanese shit is dope.
@@SlowExpensive I visited Japan as a German several times despite the questionable work hours the work ethic of the people is outstanding trying to improve step by step to deliver higher quality. That's what's was and is present in Germany but it degraded a bit because not questionable short time goal management. And there is the character of the people and society, I went to eat at a massive food area under Tokyo Sky tree people just placed their bag and the iPhone on the table to walk 50-70 yards to fetch and select some food and come back to their place because nothing happens.
You don't get that kind of trust even in smaller cities of towns in Germany anymore.
I like the battery slid back, it will not get in the way as much, especially with bigger batteries like the single row 21700 battery, or shorter driver bits.
Has Makita announced an LXT battery with 21700 cells. Or are you just referring to it in general?
Great video mate!
Sorry unrelated question-but what would you consider a better brand-Bosch or German Metabo?
If we were considering like for like, their best and newest?
Would be a much-loved video as well if you did a comparison 😎
My experience with German metabo is pretty limited at this point. I have a really nice hammer drill and then a few 12v tools that are underwhelming. German Metabo seems pretty premium and nice. Bosch has some great tools (their drills stand out for me) but their impact drivers really haven't impressed me much. If I ever get a few more tools on the Metabo line, i'll be sure to do a comparison.
All seemed to be about the same when it came to times, but to me it seemed like xdt16 was less smooth then the others
The trigger took a step forward on the 19 for me. Other than that, they are all still pretty similar.
Been looking to invest into Makita, though I'm just getting lost in all their tool lines/nomenclature. Their repairability made them stand out from the likes of Milwaukee for me.
I have previous video on several of their drills and impacts and then a few saws. Makita is even more complex when you factor in XGT
@TinkerWithTools I'll have to check that out - appreciate it
I like it. But noticeable power upgrades are just not there compared to the XDT16 and XDT19 (which I owned). And rear controls have been available on Ridgid tools over 2-3 generations already.
I'm just not feeling this tool enough to justify the purchase
Fair point.
It’s time for a new Makita …TD174!!!
It has been two years now 🤔
Performance doesn't always mean more power.
And longevity, repair/serviceability goes to Makita too generally.
Might be better off buying the made in Japan version since it costs about the same as the made in China North American release.
It's actually cheaper where I am, but about 75 dollars.
got mine in yellow to match my dewalt tools. i cant stand dewalt impacts and several have broken on me
Do you use a battery adapter to stick with DeWalt batteries?
I wish they would offer the different colors here.
@@TinkerWithTools agreed, but we ARE dealing with Makita here; Japanese owned Companies very stubborn, set in their ways, to the point of being arrogant. I’m thinking Nikon here as well, and YES, I own and use a lot of Makita tools, as well as Nikon Photographic equipment! 👍
@@Bartacolips no i have makita batteries
Found it on Amazon for $144
makita td173 vs hikoki wh36dd
Luckily instead have a video on this. Who is the King of Japanese Impact Drivers? Makita vs Hikoki!
ruclips.net/video/7UWHsM7kqPc/видео.html
Makita tools are falling way behind compared to the rest of the tool companies. They can't even release compact 18v batteries.
I think their hyper focus is on xgt whilst improving some lxt tools that needed attention like their nail guns, which is coming out soon.
GLADE YOU $PENT Your MONEY ON MAKITA S. FOR THE MONEY I COULD BUY TOP DEWALT and OR MILWAUKEE with TABLESS CELLS Or POUCH CELLS I MIGHT CONSIDER there BIG 10 inch CIRCULAR SAW IN 40 volt GREAT VIDEO EXPLANATION of them
The saws are tempting. I just rarely need something so big.
So, at what point do you screw in a 7 inch screw into a piece of wood to see if it works?
😂😂😂😂😂😂
It will do it just not as quickly as others. 8” is the upper limit of what I have tried with any of these, just not in this video.
$250?? I paid $150 on eBay for a new Japanese model
Im happy for ya Bartmus
@georgedavall9449 thank you.. Thank you for your happy happy. Ps. I just checked they are still easy to find for that price
@@Bartacolips good info Barta, thanks
Yeah the seller I pointed out in the description runs about 165 for teal and 175 for the other colors. I stick with them because every tool I have purchased from them has always arrived as described and faster than expected. Considering it’s coming from Tokyo that’s nice to see.
Japan tools are always better and perfotm better, i rather order from japan than get the usa models
They are basically the same, use identical parts just assembled in a different location. But they can be cheaper and come in more colours
I have never seen a meaningful difference in the performance of the two tools.
I have older models in both japan and china made, not much difference in performance but china made gets hotter and has smokey smell after long use
Great video, but the tool seems kind of disappointing compared to what the other brands have been releasing over the last two years. Especially considering what you're paying for Makita!
Yes the price is always a sticking point for me. There are Makita tools I have wanted recently but I haven’t picked them up simply because of the price.
@TinkerWithTools it really makes you wonder what their game plan is. Seems like they're moving out of the dewalt/milwaukee niche and moving towards a different clientele demographic. All I ever hear about is their xgt line, whereas none of their newer lxt stuff gets much attention, like that xph16 drill you reviewed a while back.
Why is it disappointing? It is literally the best in every way besides power level which is more than enough for a 1/4 drive. Price is not that important since it is a tool for professionals who will pay it off with one job...
@@riba2233 so what? It's not worth the money.
@@devonboyer626 it absolutely is lol, what are you even talking about...
Some nice features, I agree but as I was watching, was thinking my DCF887 (bought recently but on the market at least 10 years) will have these for breakfast and DCF860 would leave them in the dust. I think Makita will feel more agreeable to female power tool enthusiasts than DeWalt.
What a nonsense that last sentence was lol... 🤦♂️ And no, 887 is not more powerful than this one or any of high end makita impacts
The 887 has higher torque but lower RPM. So depending on the test you might see it go back and forth.
@@riba2233 You will see the sense when you grow up, there is a lot of time
@@soundslight7754 I'm more mature than you ever bi, no doubts about that ;) go enjoy your misogyny and ignorance, bye!
As far as average hand sizes for men vs women go I can definitely see that! Makita definitely has a friendlier grip and trigger than Dewalt, and I could see a lot of women preferring the Makita ergonomics.
the older ones are better
I don't even think you need a lot of torque on an impact driver, if your job does go get a wrench
Fair way to look at it. I think people want more torque when they don’t have frequent need for that impact wrench job they just want a single tool to do it all.
@TinkerWithTools I suppose even then makita would be good enough with all their modes. I have a 12v impact and most of the time I use the lower speed/torque mode, for motorcycle job I'd use the higher speed as that's where you benefit from more torque.
Absolutely no way, give me FLEX, DeWalt, or something that has gobs of power and performance at that price point.
Why would you want that for a 1/4 drive?
@riba2233 i am not looking for a Fisher-Price for a good gun at a premium price. I want a real power house that can muscle a 5/8" lag bolt the same as a phillips #2 screw.
@@rickyperkins232 ah yes that is the main use case for these small drivers 🤦♂️ ever heard of impact wrenches? it's also very ironic calling it fisher price since they have the highest quality on the market but ok I guess...
@riba2233 An impact wrench isn't meant to cross over and do screws but an impact driver can do it all. Why would you want to carry an additional tool that is heavier when another tool does it all. It is silly for you to have and purchase a dedicated tool that only does one thing if your requirements are many.
@@rickyperkins232 incorrect, lag bolts have hex heads so you should use them with a socket, not to mention that for some larger ones you should even use a mid or a high torque wrench instead of a compact one. These tiny drivers are absolutely not meant to do it, sure they can in a pinch but def not the right tool for the job.
One of the most horrible impacts ever, so little power and highly priced
😅 good one buddy
Can't argue with the price component as it's one of the most expensive impacts in the US market. There are other parts of the world where it is more reasonable - but as long as it remains higher than others here - I think it will struggle to sell.
