  • Known as ‘Big Daddy’ by his supporters and ‘The Butcher’ by his critics, Idi Amin went from being a dirt-poor illiterate boy from a town in north-west Uganda so remote nobody knows its name, to becoming the third president of Uganda, a speaker on the global political stage. He was infamous for his ruthless stomping down of perceived traitors, expulsions of non-Africans, his widespread terror, and his taking joy in humiliation.

One important thing that was left out, was that Idi Amin personally killed & tortured hundreds, if not thousands, of people with his own hands. This is unique and almost never seen amongst dictators throughout history. Usually they like to order others to commit atrocities on their behalf, but not carry it out themselves. He was a psychopath who derived pleasure from killing human beings.

Ugandan here. People say he was painted as such by his foes but it's lies. This man was deranged and was a blueprint of evil. When his residences were overran by liberating Tanzanian and Ugandan exile troops, they found hundreds of photographs of tortured people which he used to instruct to be presented to him which he'd go over with relish. As head of state, he wasn't just someone who was satisfied with eliminating his opponents but someone who with glee personally took part in some of it and went ahead to keep photos as momentos to go over later. While serving in the British King's African Rifles and the newly independent Uganda army, the severity he depicted when handling tasks such personally coming up with torture techniques or carrying out assignments with unnecessarily extreme force that it even irked his superiors in those instances.

Political figures preach water and take wine. And 2 facts can coexist.
      1. Yes he had many speeches about Uganda for Ugandans and putting the nation first. But he actively encouraged tribalism even ordering the massacre people of the Langi/Acholi tribes. He encouraged mismanagement in government offices by incompetent choice of appointments based on favouritism.
Corruption, inflation, extra judicial arrests, and killings, torture, poor service delivery, embezzlement, dilapidated infrastructure, shortages of basic commodities became the order of the day. Uganda saw a massive wave of exiles fleeing his misrule to Kenya & Tanzania. I'm sure they were too happy in Uganda so they wanted a break of the happiness.
      2. His big talk of African Unity too was countered by his actions. He periodically had diplomatic standoffs with Kenya, was an aggressor against Tanzania against which he ordered the attack to capture land from. This however later backfired during the Ugandan-Tanzanian War. He participated in Uganda's first dubious military foray into the Congo, looting gold & ivory. His actions aided the break up of the East African Community which until that point was taking strides to develop the region. Such a spirit of Pan-Africanism, wow!
      3. Whites actually in the beginning were pro-Amin. The U.K could have known something about Obote's eminent overthrow & were among the first countries to recognize his government. Israel provided much technical support to his army in terms of intelligence and arms in the beginning of his rule. The U.K continued to be his biggest donor in financial & material aid until it's sanctions due to his government's erratic actions.
Sometimes when doing history revisionism, facts still remain etched in stone.
For all we know animal rights activists or those against smoking will make Hitler the face of sainthood because he was against animal cruelty or smoking: two facts which, although are good, don't change the overall image of him being an evil person who preached and promoted terrorism, racism, genocide, war & other crimes against humanity.

Ugandan dictator Idi Amin killed so many people because he was a brutal and ruthless leader who ruled through fear and violence. He came to power in a military coup in 1971 and quickly established a dictatorship characterized by human rights abuses, corruption, and economic mismanagement.
Known for his eccentric and erratic behavior, Amin reportedly ordered the executions of thousands of people during his regime, including political opponents, intellectuals, and minorities. He also expelled Uganda's Asian population and engaged in numerous military conflicts, including a war with Tanzania.
Amin's childhood was not well-documented, but it is known that he was born in the early 1920s in rural Uganda. He reportedly grew up in poverty and did not receive a formal education. Amin joined the British colonial army in the late 1940s and rose through the ranks to become a military officer.
Overall, Amin's upbringing, combined with his unchecked power and violent tendencies, likely contributed to his ruthless and destructive rule as Uganda's dictator.

Please do fromer Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is likely the most important modern African leader. 1. As a young General his victories ended the Nigerian Civil War (1967 - 1970) 2. When people feared the end of the war would lead to ethnic massacres he turned around and defended the people he just conquered from his own army. 3. Twice he was persuaded to replace a dictator and both times handed the country back to democracy. Critically, he not only stepped down but refused to run in either election. 4. He spent 4 years in prison for opposing another military dictatorship, 5. When the dictator died he was released and this time ran for president and won in 1999 and was reelected in 2003 for his final term. 6. He somehow held together the nation that had every reason to implode, yet left the nation in 2007 in a state that has seen seven presidential elections and multiple peaceful transfers of power. The near exclusion of Obasanjo in these educational videos about African rulers on youtube, when he should have the most, is a confounding phenomenon. Yet it follows the pattern of ignoring the best of Africa and highlighting the worst

Do you understand that such love is a disaster? in fact, this is slavish loyalty to the propaganda of those who killed en masse people like you. Idi Ammn had about 300-500.000 victims, where he had the right to kill anyone who did not like him or who did not want to obey. Do you like being someone's slave? People like him will declare human rights, your rights, the intrigues of enemies, and they will assert their unlimited power under the pretext of caring for the nation. But in this nation there will be no place for those who have their own opinions and who dare to argue with a stupefied idiot who has abou 4 grades of education.

When I was a kid, I remember reading he liked eating humans stuffed with rice, roasted over open fire. He also fed humans to wild animals and watched them being devoured. Will never forget this.

Wtf. If not him it could have been a normal /slightly corrupt or other just completely average leader. Like Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana. Building a feeling of nationality over tribalism and group/religious connections and creating the stability needed to slowly accostom the people to fully democracy. Even just the Switch to democracy needs decades in most countries, the turmoil after suddenly being de-occupied is massive. Especially since not being a colony anymore doesn't just magically split the country and what happened/continues to happen from the Former coloniser lmao. Just look at France and it's former colonies. Sadly many people don't care enough to actually educate themselves on literally anything further away than their Supermarked, let alone third world nations
