His music takes my breath away. I remember when this first aired, I didn't think I could love Robert Smith and The Cure any more, and then I saw them again in concert this year and was absolutely blown away. He is a treasure, I hope he knows how much his music, his lyrics have touched the lives of people all over the world.
They were incredible on this year's tour! I have seen them several times (since the late 80s) and the 2023 tour was one of the best! I was very happily surprised!
I remember making sure I was home so I could record this on VHS. My daughter always shares her music discoveries with me. She asked the other day if I ever heard of the Cure. She was stunned that I new the lyrics to every song she played for me.
I remember back in the 80's the only way to see or hear cure stuff was to watch MTV 120 minutes..It was on Sunday nights midnight to two am...Always started my workweek exhausted but it was worth it!! I'm old enough to appreciate the hardcore access you tube and the like give us..love having access to the cure 24/7.........
Thank u for posting I'd never seen this, love it. Shows dear Robert perfect as he is, all the best aspects of his personality, and.. He's just delicious 😍😍😍
Just be thankful we came up in the best music era ever. Don’t be sad because it’s gone. Be thankful it existed, and was recorded. Be thankful you know the feeling of tuning into 120 Minutes You are lucky.
@@tgnomechaser dude, you're cherry-picking the best artists from that era and ignoring a lot of crap. There was a _ton_ of cheesy music back then that is almost unlistenable today. Thousands of corny pop artists created by record labels. I love a lot of 50s and 60s music, but there were so many unoriginal copycat bands. So many songs about holding hands at the sock hop. No dark music, except maybe the Doors. Music became much more interesting and liberated in the 70s and 80s, particularly in the punk/post-punk/new wave era. The rise of independent record labels. I prefer the weirdness and experimentation of that era.
Every era of music has its diehards. It constantly evolves, that’s what makes it so special Just don’t assume that modern music can’t hold a candle. It’s just different, which is pretty rad
So... correction: " The older he grew the better he has become on stage and in the studio. Now he's 64 and he still rocks us. That is respect." :) Unfortunately that respect only comes around every 15 years or so.
I personally loved the Self titled album, but that's subjective.. my age and what I was going through in my life at that time, it was a big vibe for me
So awesome artist ! Thanks a lot for sharing this ! A true fan of The CURE since I was a teenager. Now I'm 56 I still do listen to their haunting sound and deep lyrics ! A unic sound, one of the greatest band ever ! Friendly from France (17 mai 2022)
this was broadcast on my 5th birthday..my parents were Cure fans since before I was born, so I grew up to listening to them. I remember the Mixed Up period fondly. thank you for this awesome upload.
Same with my stepdaughter. She’s 18 and finally we were able to take her to her first Cure show end of May at the Hollywood Bowl. Funny that we saw them on the same date there in 2016. I’ve seen them so many times prior and each show holds special memories. I have to say that one of the best was Irving Plaza and the other Radio Shows in 1997. Hearing Forever live was easily one of my all time favorites. They would open with Torture and started bringing back some older stuff then. The Holy Hour is another one I’ll never forget live. Sinking is another fave live. Endless memories! 😊
What an unbelievably charming, honest and even humble man Robert Smith was and still is. And how iconic the band and a bandleader with songs that will not stop amazing anyone with a heart. I have always admired this guy and the musical influence and sheer beauty he has shared with us and I would have loved to play in this band. Im very happy with what I do with my band Wondertrees and worked with shitloads of bands as monitor engineer and other roles at Paradiso Amsterdam but this would have topped it. Well y knows, can't win em all I suppose> big X Robert!
It's wild how capital G grunge in 1992 totally wiped out the diversity of styles shown on alternative mainstream MTV and other places from 88-91. The weirdness/strangeness was totally wiped out.
I agree with you . There was a warped pop sensibility, melody, wackiness, creativity that gave way to grunge, or bands that emulated grunge. Oasis was basically sporty, anthemic arena rawk. There were some great artists in the 90’s , but nobody could ever be the alt pop rock of The Cure or The Banshees again.
You got to love Robert. I have Permagrin watching him. and he needs to be thanked with the highest of honors.. if it wasnt for him there wouldnt have been so many cute cute cute girls in the 80-90s goth scene.
I used to set my VCR to record this as it was on at midnight-2am and at the time I wasn’t able to stay up that late. Those were the days!! Thanks for this!!!😊
Just amazing. I remember when it was first on. Thanks for posting this. BTW, I was at the Chicago show on June 10,2023. I'm STILL buzzed after that show. One of the best shows ever!
Growning up, i had a fucked up Hyundai..from like 2001-2006 But my Pops installed a hellacious Blaupunkt stereo in it(probly coz we both drove it, equally often). Anyway, Id drive around blasting Unkle's Psyence Fiction..and that Close To Me remix!!& with my backglass stickers Id ordered one of the Calvin&Hobbs, where he's pissing..on a Nickleback sticker. So, if you were behind me, and you caught my Piss On Nickleback..combo, Shout-out and I hope you thought it was as fucking vital and great as I did. And still do. Blaupunkt. Lol Had a whopping 6 (6!!)CD changer. And usually only ate and stuck CD's..maybe twice a week. Which, that wasn't so bad.
Their kiss me kiss me kiss me album was their most extreme bi polar to that date. From the happy catchy tunes, to the horrific song "the Kiss".. Theres been many interpretations of what The Kiss is about, but I have never interpreted it as anything other than a song about rape.
You are on point. No one else will sing "Get your voice out of my head. I never wanted any of this. I wish you were dead." or "you're a waste of time. You're a fucking waste." pure hatred for a person that no one else will touch and then Robert can turn around and sing Just Like Heaven or Catch on the same album. Pure Cure!!
Remembering anticipating this special on 120 Minutes back in 1990. Just wished Robert and the gang would be more showmen on stage, like they are in the videos.... Still waiting, 33 years later.
As a bass player myself and one that keeps an open ear to the bass community and it's "going's on", I have to respectfully disagree. Gallup is definitely underrated but, to say he's the "most underrated bassist ever"? Sorry but, that's not quite true. There are tons more great bassists that never get the spotlight or even a mention in the bass community. At least he's mentioned when The Cure comes up, as being a cornerstone of the band and regarded as a very important component of their sound, Post Punk/Goth music and the band in general. Other great bassists from other great bands rarely, if ever, get that.
This was before Seattle hijacked the indie scene and turned it into a copy-cat cash cow. The teenage Gen-Xers who fell for grunge were used to metal and gangster rap. Didn't know bands like Sonic Youth, The Cure, R.E.M. and Pixies. I was an indie kid from the 80s and saw it firsthand. Call me an old head or a college radio hipster. It's just the truth.
You've got a point there, but who's to blame? They didn't have internet back then (I know radio was an option but even so). They (girls and boys) were a product of their time and felt understood at least. I understand the fact that musically this alternative 80's bands were far superior but when your life's shit does musicianship really matter? It's just rock'n'roll...
He has always talked very lightly, and mumble sometimes. I think he is brilliant. I'm 61 and have grown up with Robert and The Cure. I had fun taking my son to a concert when he was in his 20s and he knew the songs because he grew up with them too. I missed this last tour due to surgery (I had tickets). My son says he looks old but I see him as he has always been, beautiful and able to bring all emotions into his songs. Thank you Robert for giving me songs that are a part of my life. ❤
The pain that he’s endured and the realization of life slowly trickling by is so prevalent in the new songs. It’s often unbearable, but I feel it too as I age. Never will stop loving this man. I’m happy I got to meet them a few times and I never will forget all of the memories of friendships that stemmed from either waiting on line (old school way) at the box office, overnight, in the cold, etc. Or striking up conversations with someone who had a Cure shirt on (fellow freaks) at the mall or elsewhere. I’m aging myself but those were some great times and friendships that endure til this day!
@@TCDB Thanks for letting me know that👍😊 Robert always seems very timid and shy and patient. I wonder how he got through the weeks back in the 80s and 90s and copes nowadays post COVID-19? I must admit he used to creep the heck outta me when I was a young boy. It was the laquered spider black cobweb hair he had and bright red lip stick in those days. I love The Cure, but this was a terrible episode of 120 Minutes. It’s like the dreaded clip show that sitcoms used to do. I they had shown the videos in their entirety with Robert doing an intro for them.
Actually, MTV shown some of the videos in their entirety, I edited them out for 2 reasons. Firstly, because I uploaded this video 25 years after it first aired, and those videos have already become available officially and in better quality on VHS, DVD and here on RUclips. Secondly to avoid copyright strikes at the time of uploading.
