- After a slow 2 hours of no real noteworthy hands, we run into a big spot where we punt off our first $600 buy-in. We rebuy for another $600, and…can we recover? This session is full of aggressive players who 3-bet liberally, and we try our hand at taking advantage of our reads on them, shutting them down with some well-timed 4-bets!

What continuation bet sizing do you think is appropriate on the flop of the AK hand at 9:28?
I like your bet ... I like the standard 1/3 pot size bet there myself ... I like that it can disguise your monster hands and your big draws ... gives no information to your opponent!
140 bet is fine, especially with your style. Smaller sizing=more of your range you can bet with
Think the hand was played perfectly, especially if you believed he had a made hand. Only time I would just call the raise on the turn is if there was some belief that he was bluffing pure air.
Dont think he is putting 700 in the pot without some kind of equity, better to get it in without any scare cards coming to freeze the action.
And I also agree Aces w Ace of hearts would be a nice hand to bluff with for balance in that same situation (not sure if you really need to be balanced at 1/3 though, would depend on who you are playing)
Mark, I agree with your assessment about only calling the turn raise in such scenarios. I didn't expect this to be one of those times, which is why I went with it. 😄

As far as the AK hand, I think your sizing is spot on disguising not only the strength of your hand, but grows the pot at the same time. It also offers the villain a good price to continue with a myriad of hands in this spot! Great job! Congratulations on not only playing your biggest pot but also winning it! Yeah, I'm so happy I was able to take that huge pot down after losing two huge pots in earlier $1/3 sessions. It definitely gave me some added confidence! Hopefully the trend continues long term (though I have had some losing sessions since then, which will be since in a future vlog). Thanks for watching and for the encouragement!

I gotta say that what drew me too you was the low stakes, what keeps me coming back is because of your skill not only in the play of the cards, but also the way you explain your thought patterns that go along with the play! One never knows the lives we touch just being kind and gracious to other human beings! Congrats on the win and the move up in stakes. I am on a nice three month run, but don't have balls to move up yet. Maybe someday.
I've shared that sentiment, I definitely have felt very intimidated just trying to get myself to play bigger stakes the first few times! I'm still feeling that way, but it's subsiding a bit at $1/3, though it's definitely still there for $2/5. I think it's just one of those things where it'll only go away with experience. The 1/3 games in Texas are legit!
I used some of your strategies at the Bike in L.A this weekend and tripled my buy-in. I over bet for value, my trip 9's to a 10 high board and my A-Q to a Q-J-3 board. I got calls on both and the hands held up. I normally would make just standard bets and get sucked out on. Good luck !

Aggressive opponents are my favorite to have at the table with large stacks. I always call with mediocre and junk hands in bloated pots and tend to stack 1 or 2 of them.

at 9:30 a 140 downbet seems like perfect sizing. I'd prefer a smooth call on turn and maybe donk jam river but he wasn't folding with his holding no matter what
Since I've started playing $1/3 MTS more, I've been finding that trapping in these spots works better at $1/2 than it does at the $1/3 game. Specifically, people aren't overvaluing hands as much, and they may be less willing to get the money in on scary river cards, where it could go check/check. In that AK hand specifically, the river paired the board, and it would have been scary for either of us to value bet there, leaving money on the table (for me). If my hand was a boat at that point, or another hand that is not going to be scared of some river cards, I'd be more inclined to take that route I think.
@@HuggiePoker excellent points! the bet/three bet just looks so strong but it could also look like a strong overpair that wants to protect from straight/flush draws
@@gwheels25 It definitely looks strong, but with him having committed $700 already, he only had a little over $900 more behind. That's almost half his stack (or what's left of it on the turn) in the middle already, and I figured he would be willing to get it in at that point.

Yeah, that's true, I do tend to open up a bit more once I've got more chips in front of me. Part of it has to do with feeling more comfortable with the game, but I do think there's something to be said for not letting it get out of hand.

The KQo hand at about 11:45. Why did you "down bet" after the flop? I've seen you do this pretty frequently across your vlogs, and not the only time in this session. What's your thinking there?
I think downbetting on flops is more common in bigger games than smaller stakes games. It basically accomplishes the same goal of getting missed hands to fold while keeping in hands that are behind for a good price. We also don't want to overly bloat the pot with just one pair, even though it is top pair. This hand is a good example where, if I had bet more on the flop before checking back the turn, you can imagine we would have faced a much larger river bet while still only having the same amount of information.

U should have check the 4/5 hand to act like the ace is scaring your big pair u rep with 4 bet, but Hindsight is 20/20 obviously

Wow...how much are the fees? Seems kinda steep???
It depends on where you play, but I typically play at The Lodge, which has the lowest fees around here. They charge $25/month for a membership and $10/hour for a seat. There's no rake, so it's basically a trade-off. It's a great price when you're getting hands and running well, but it obviously doesn't feel good when you're card dead.
If you think about it, you will see that you will lose at least $10 an hour from rake at a normal casino. In the long run the price is excellent.

I started with $320, but only ever had to buy in for $140 of it. I had a pretty lucky start to be honest!

On one of the dryest boards in history, blocking all top pairs this dude decides to take almost a 2/3rds sizing 🤣 and is surprised when both players fold. I guess you're targeting calls from QJss and 78ss? That's it though. That's a very poor sizing. I like a 1/4 sizing of 65$. Maybe somebody spazzes. Betting 150$, nobody is spazzing.
We're 700+ bigs deep on a flop that KJ, KQ, QJ, 87, TX, 9X, and a lot of pairs are probably calling a bet on. We've seen in this session and earlier ones that players in Texas are willing to call pre-flop 3-bets and 4-bets with a wide range, and I've also got an aggressive image at the table that I'm expecting opponents to play back at me with. I've got no reason to play it slow here.
