Surprisingly, this song was actually inspired by a friend of one of the band members. The friend and his wife had had an abortion and they had begun really regretting what they had done. A counselor suggested they treat it like a death in the family and they did. They got a tombstone, held a funeral, and mourned their loss of their baby, Lucy.

This song often makes me cry; My grandma's name is Lucy and just last year she was diagnosed with Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer in connective tissue. Then this song, more than ever became really hard because I had started planning that I would sing this at her funeral. Fast forward a few weeks to the surgery date, and the fact that she was in surgery at 76 was enough on it's own to scare me because of the risks at her age. My grandma has always meant more to me than anyone in the world. She helped raise me when I grew up in an otherwise abusive household so she was like a second mom to me. The hours crawled by of her being in surgery, and soon I get the news: "She's going to be fine, and in fact, we removed all of the cancer, so this isn't going to be what will take her life. She's strong, she's healthy, and has a long life left ahead of her, she just need to keep her for a few days for monitoring". The best news of my life! Anyway so this song brings back memories for me, some good/some bad, but in all I guess I don't have to have those bad memories because she's okay now so I don't need those thoughts. It's just always been my dream she live long enough that when I have kids, that she's around to watch them grow. Thanks for those of you who cared to take the time to read this... just needed to get it off my chest.

This song reminds me of my mom... we got into a fight, and I told her I hated her. I left and didn't takk to her for months. The last time I saw her, she was sedated, going in for emergency surgery. She never woke up.
I would give anything... ANYTHING, to tell her I love her... to hug her... to apoligize to her... to see her one last time.

Rachel W thank you... but I can't make myself believe that she didn't think I loved her. The last words I spoke still haunt me. Like the song says: " I know I'd do it all diffrent if I had the chance, but all I got are these roses to give and they can't help me make amends."
I hope you can learn to forgive yourself. She would have. I'd suggest seeking therapy like the couple that the song is inspired off of did.

I recently lost my older sister in a car crash. Her name was also Lucy, she died on her birthday. Her boyfriend was driving her to her 16th birthday surprise party. She died on impact. I miss her. Lucy James. I miss you.

I just finished listening to the whole album Awake, and it is definitely my favourite Skillet album. Almost every song bought tears to eyes, reading every comment on how people have lost someone they care about and getting the feeling that my through is clogging up... Skillet did an amazing job on this album and they have helped countless people get through their toughest times.

I know this is a song about loss, but I came here for nostalgia, my older brothers used to love this band and this song. I came here because i miss the old days. I havent seen the older one in over a year, and the younger one is always busy. Those were the times. they would play these songs and play on the original xbox.
I dedicated this song to my beautiful grandmother... The woman who help raise me... I can't thank her enough for it.... I love her so much... I unfortunately lost her a month ago, a day or so after my 15th birthday.... The worst part about it was that I never got to give her a proper farewell..... I planned singing this song for her burial as my way to say "Goodbye/Goodnight"... It seems tears are streaming down my cheeks rapidly now... I can not bare the thought that I was not there for her when she needed it.... I love her so much....

(Not sure if I've made this comment before...) Change "Lucy" to "Sammy". She was only seven and had abusive parents. I told her to stand up to them and that she would be okay. I said that her parents would see the horrible things they were doing to her. But when I went to check up on her later that day, all I saw when I got into the house was her dead, bruised, pale body lying on the floor... Her parents were arrested, but they're being bailed out soon. But I promise that I will not let her parents live in happiness. And I intend on keeping that promise.

Visiting this song again in 2018. In a sense, it reminds me of my dad. He passed away almost three years ago. We never had the best relationship, however, when we tried to be together more he ended up with leukemia. Within three months, he was gone. It was hard to watch such a proud man dwindle quickly. I know he’s watching over me now and I honestly wish we got to spend more time together. There’s a lot of regret that I must live with. However, I can’t wait to see him in heaven again.
If you’re going through a difficult situation, I pray that God helps you out, is with you always, and that you are able to find rest.

Which are regret and sorrow about losing a loved one. Let people interpret those feelings and lyrics like they want, allow people make a personal connection without trying to correct them and distance the song from them. To comment along the lines of "well actually, this song isn't about that" on a personal message is kind of a dick move. Especially with such a great song that conveys these difficult emotions and is a crutch to so many people who use this song as an outlet for such emotions.

I am a 19 year old male, almost 20. Two years ago, my mother died and I never got to see her in person after i was taken away in foster care. She died of a heart attack in her sleep. I had a sibling who introduced me to this band more than 10 years. I came across just the name of this song but didn't think anything of it. Later a few years after, I actually listened to it for the first time, and like I stated in a previous comment, started to feel really sad and started to cry. I asked my sibling what the song was about because I had a feeling that it wasn't just about a couple who hurt each other, like I had originally thought. My sibling told me with a concerned look that she couldn't tell me now at my age (5th grade at the time). Years later after rediscovering this song, I now know the meaning and man, it impacted me, both the meaning, and how a relative of mine didn't want to have to explain to a little kid the heavy and messed up (the cause of Lucy's death) concepts of the song. It's such a powerful song.

This is the first time i have heard this song and my eyes were watering after listening to the lyrics and reading what it was about but it is just so sad but with a small hint of something I cant describe in it and what completely sounds like regret. This song reminds me of the day my puppy, Dakota died. I had gone to my friends birthday party, and it was right after getting her puppy shots done. I remember wanting my friend to spend thr night with me that night and my parents said no. As we were driving away, my dad told me that there was an accident and my mom burst into tears. I asked who had gotten hurt and my dad said it was Dakota. I instantly fell apart. Dakota had fallen asleep under the wheel of our truck and she was so little my mom hadn't seen her. Dakota took her last breath in my moms arms. I had only had her three days and I loved her so much, (I am in tears right now typing this) she went way to young at only 6 weeks. If I hadn't gone to that birthday party, my baby girl would still be alive. This was only 6 months ago and I still feel regret that my baby had to go like that. I couldn't even help my parents bury her. I had gone all the way from south caroline to alabama to get this sweet girl. I still have a big hole in my heart from the loss that i experianced that day. I wish that I could have spent more time with her.
