Leo Kottke (born 1945, Athens, Georgia, U.S.A.) is an acoustic guitarist widely known for his innovative fingerpicking style which draws on influences from blues, jazz, and folk music, and his syncopated, polyphonic melodies.
Kottke has overcome a series of personal obstacles including partial loss of hearing and a nearly career-ending bout with tendon damage in his right hand to emerge as a widely-recognized master of his instrument.

This tune was actually written and recorded as Echoing Wilderness by Richard Gilewitz. Leo heard it, liked it and recorded part of Echoing Wilderness as Echoing Gilewitz, giving credit to the composter.

Went to high school with Richard G in the 70's. Leo Kotke was one of his idols, but Richard has become quite the musician himself...

This vid is post recovery from his injuries. Notice how his position is rather formal? Saw him in Tucson back in the mid seventies, when he still used finger picks and sat on a high stool with his right ankle up on his left knee. I was always amazed that he didn't fall off. Back then his playing was VERY physical. And fast. And absolutely amazing!

Thank you Ginny! I'm not fully up on Leo's story, but I know he had some serious issues at one stage with his right picking hand so for a time he only played the six string. In fact i think this cd is all 6-string guitar. Thanks again!

@FakeSidewalks I'm really not sure, don't have the sheet music, but Little Beaver from memory was certainly in open D. Once was able to play it, years ago. He played Little Beaver on A Prairie Home Companion when the cd was released - you got to hear it ! I've got it on tape, see if i can find and upload it - magic !!

@FakeSidewalks If i find the tape i'll upload it, but it's currently hiding it seems. Haven't heard Garrison for a while, though i've always enjoyed him. Re Leo he likes tuning down a half step as you probably realise. Sure glad you enjoyed - thanks!

@manfreadstraw I absolutely love Prairie Home Companion! I grew up listening to Garrison Keillor. Please do.
And yes, I figured it all out a few weeks ago. If you want sheet music or tabs, I can definitely write some for you (or anybody else who is interested).

@geturledout Thank you for that. Leo, what a master, but he doesn't like his fellow motorists though, referring to them with naughty words, and sign language ! lol.

Is this generally performed in open D#? It's a little unusual. Incredibly pretty when in such a low register (the harmonics sound so full!), but unusual.

That's of course composer and not composter.
