Leo used to perform this regularly in his Minnesota coffeehouse sets in the 1960s. Then one night he told the audience he wouldn't do any more Dylan tunes, at least for a while. "I'll go back to doing his stuff when he starts doing some of mine." I'm not sure he stuck to that.
THANK YOU. Retired in Costa Rica with time to learn. Found out about Leo and I'm sold. With RUclips you get to see his life. This is such an amazing talent find for me. Thank you to those of you that have shared their experiences.
This *sigh* masterpiece along with Eight Miles High are my favorite covers by Mr. Kottke. I've seen him perform a couple of times over the years, first in the early 90's. In a tiny club, half full and I was within a few feet of him. I watched his hands in awe. One man sounds like 3 amazing players! I adore his voice and humorous banter, too, no matter his distaste for it! This is a soulful, beautiful one. 🤍
Amazing!!! At first I thought it was mistaken identity but then read comments and listened closely and realized that it was Leo. Just saw him a week ago, still as compelling as ever!
Leo's such a great artist. He changed the landscape of the six & twelve string guitar. Set the bar high many decades ago. He's 72 years old now & is coming to town on Wednesday!
I'm from Ok. We didin't have alot of musical folk/rock/blues artists on any local radio channels. but my sister found one out of Potuea that played all of these guys, commander cody, the old steve miller bob dylan grateful dead I could go on but thanks uttube. I'm sure I'll find the rest..
I was turned on to Kottke way back in 1971 or so and was lucky to have seen him backing up Logins and Messina not long after. dude is amazing and he's just gotten better with time. Never heard his version of this until now, tho. Stephen Stills also does a damn good cover as does Pete Townsend.
I, too, loved Tom Northcott's version. For me, still the best, but Leo does absolutely great too. Northcott also did The Rainmaker, a Harry Nielson song, which I loved.
yes. yes. yes. i have been loving this whole bootleg show for years and finally it's gaining fame on youtube! go find the whole show people! it's out there. and there sounds like there was about 4 people in the room with him... incredible.
The melody is very old but Dylan could turn a musical phrase like no other. Add that to probably the premere acoustic guitarist in - like - ever, bliss! Thanks for posting.
Live At the No Exit Coffee House I think is the name of this recording...it's like 1969 or something, really early and awesome. This was the best track, and right before it Leo says, "The No Exit is obviously loosing money tonight. Here's a song by Bob Dylan."
I was looking for "Circle Round the Sun" and after I listened to it, good ol' RUclips suggested this song. Have only heard Bob Dylan sing it before. This so so beautiful, it touches me deeply. Thank you so much for posting!!
This song is soooo good, so much better than the Dylan version in my opinion, but then I am a big Kottke fan. I need to learn this one on guitar like yesterday. This is just really beautiful. Thanks for the upload!
If you can even begin to cover Leo's work I am impressed. I goof around on guitar, know a few chords and do a little tiny bit of fingerpicking, but I can never approach even covering a song like this. But I sure wish I could play like this!
I fully agree to this! And not only because of his gitar playing, which is far over the original, but even for his singing. Of course, a matter of personal taste, some people would think differently, OK.
@odor9 Indeed... nice to watch nice songs and also read positive feedback... kinda keeps you going for more and widening your horizon even more and its beautifull
I think Leo has always been more comfortable playing guitar than singing. He has that famous humorous quote about his voice. But some songs suit him better than others. I think especially about Louise, Pretty Pamela Brown, Julie's House and Girl From the North Country. Of them, I think the other three best represent his sweet spot as a vocalist, but his rendition of this song is powerful and appealing.
Kottke singing Dylan? It don't get any better than this!

Absolutely the best cover of this song. Thank you
Wow. This recording must be close to fifty years old. Many thanks.
Feels like we should stand up or something.

To me personally THIS is the best cover of this song that I've heard. Great upload c:
Agree =)

Wow did not know Leo ever did it! Beautiful.
Amazing!!!

Fantastic performance, both vocal and instrumental, it gives me goose bumps every time I`m listenning...

Growing up around Vancouver, back in the late sixties Tom Northcott did a version of this tune that originally turned me on to it.I'm forever grateful.
I, too, loved Tom Northcott's version. For me, still the best, but Leo does absolutely great too. Northcott also did The Rainmaker, a Harry Nielson song, which I loved.

I love Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, but Leo Kottke's version is just perfect.
Sam Bush kills it too if you havent heard Sams rendition.....check it out!!
Price Funderburk and Eddie Vedder

is ketchup really your dog's name? had me laughing out loud, so cute! :)
I agree, such a good interpretation. Never been a big Dylan fan.
yeah, this is a recording from a little coffee house, heard the audience was about 9 people. Leo himself only got a copy in 1996... 28 years later
This is freaking fantastic! This is why I love You Tube! Thank You, thank you for posting!
This is why I love the internet.
Powerful and lovely - as the Irish would say.
2:00-about 2:08 Oh mah GAD! O.O
My thought exactly
Very nice
It's a live recording from 1968
This song is soooo good, so much better than the Dylan version in my opinion, but then I am a big Kottke fan. I need to learn this one on guitar like yesterday. This is just really beautiful. Thanks for the upload!
Dylan recorded a version with Johnny Cash that was fantastic.

i don't feel as strongly as you about that but i cant help but appreciate the way you phrased that opinion it gave me a chuckle

WHAT?! Yes
cool
was this very recording used in the film North Country?
Where's the picture come from?
嘿,哥们儿,那张酷酷的 Vcover 照片是哪来的?
Hmm Leo is always quoted as a baritone but there is definitely a high f# which is above 12th fret on 1st string. Anyone explain this ?
Good Lord! Where in hell did you find this?!
Makes me want to pick up my guitar and try to play this, ( and fail of course!)
This picture is beautiful too. Is it from the album?
Jeff Leach Music no, it is not from the album
@catchthuwaves you never know til you try :/ dont count yourself out without giving it an effort
anybody knows what tuning this is?
Seppo h
anybody who can help me with this gets a fancy reward
+Seppo h He's playing in standard tuning - in G mode, capped high (don't know how far up, but it's high). You can hear the hammer-ons G-C/G-G.
+Mike Lord P.S. I meant 'capoed'.
No Exit is obviously losing money tonight. Let's try something a little more commercial.
"This was written by, "grunt" Bob Dylan. " I've never seen him do this live.
kottke should only sing in the shower; kottke singing dylan is worse than dylan singing dylan.
clearly you are uninformed
depends on whether you want style and technique or life experience.
