Townsend says it all with some fantastic guitar work. Remember me to one who lives there for she once was a true love of mine Another story of a lost love we never forget
I listened to this song in 1965 when I lived in Germany. I was young and in love and I would listen to this song over and over and think of her. Wishing I was with her. Of course Dylan was the singer on the original record. I have to say that Pete Townsend has done the best interpretation I have ever heard. And, I have to admit my mind travels back to those lonely nights while I listen to Pete.
Pete does Dylan proud! 🤗 For all of his wind killing and bombastic rocking (which I also love) Pete singing softly and sweetly will ALWAYS be my favorite. A very talented boy! If he keeps at it, he might make something of himself someday! 😂
Whenever I hear Pete sing I remember being in my early twenties. His guitar and voice always gave me solace and made me feel like I wasn't alone- that someone else shared my feelings of love and loss. I love this rendition of Girl from the North Country, it has a dreamlike quality.
I have wandered RUclips listening to a lot of covers of this song...I keep coming back to this version...absolutely catches the spirit of this masterpiece!
nice job pete! lovely keyboards jon carin! great thing about Mr Townsend is that he often says wonderful things between songs. There wouldn't be a lot of Harper fans at Woodstock 98, but Pete lets the cat outta the bag quite deliberately and does a lovely hommage to boot. god bless you sir! wordofgord
Roy always made a point of telling the audience that this was a traditional English folk song that Dylan pinched. It’s beautiful wherever it came from ✌🏻
On the new Who album that was just released in 2019, the song "Danny And My Ponies" reminds me of this classic performance by Pete. 2019 and we're still getting new material from The Who!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have loved Pete for his whole career, first time seeing him finger pick a whole song, fantastic, he loves those J-200's, a design bought from Epiphone way back.
These same lyrics can actually be found in Simon and Garfunkels Scarborough Fair/Canticle. It is an old song that is done in many forms. "for she once was a true love of mine"
Love this Pete, thanks also for checking Roy repeatedly, the man (Roy Harper) is a largely unsung near-genius and fantastic guitarist/songwriter. I love the fact that even on a relatively gentle and beautiful song like this Pete just can't... keep... still...! Great energy channeled into a wonderful performance and I love those eerie bits too.
thanks colourscrash, this is just lovely; had no idea Pete did this one. you gotta hand it to him, his heart's always in the right place...most of that crowd wouldn't know Harper at all. Reminds me of Pete's solo version Of "No Face No Name No Number" at thew Jim Capaldi tribute. the word of gord
depth....... a song that reminds me of someone......when its sung by a pro it can still evoke that pain of missing her .......Have you loved like that? Have ya? Its tough to live without it....maybe its just tough to know its out there and has been out there but its not here now.
I used to just leave this one on repeat when I was in high school. Another recording of this (I think a slightly better version) is available on the purple-covered "Pete Townshend: Live at the Maryville Academy" I'd listen to My Generation and Won't Get Fooled during the day, and play this through the headphones at night - equally moved.
The "eerie bits" about the fall out puts the other lines into perspective. The description of the cold and winter now refer to Nuclear Winter His fixation about her red hair now suggests that it fell out due to radiation sickness Even the bit about her doing laundry by hand now implies that her home regressed to a pre-Industrial society. Even him revealing that he can't get to her could refer to that he is in another shelter dying and is making his final wishes known to someone else.
...."..I'm wondering if she remembers me at all,"....I hope all of us have a North Country girl,as do I...so beautiful and so tragic to love someone so much.
wow what a great verison of the song I like how Pete made it his own verision I like this verison alot its diffrent maybe that why I like it but still a big fan of Bob D thx for posting a big fan frm NJ
I can't explain why this song has a hypnotic effect on the listener. One of the all time great songs.
Its simplicity, its dignity, its universal timeless humanity.
I always see my best friend who lived in her car in KY in a cold snowy winter. You are right, Chuck Beeverton, it is timeless.
@@michaelbuckland2819 Well said
....probably only listeners who were in love when they were very young.....we were lucky.
@@MrRhmccabe indeed!
I love it when Townsend plays acoustic, he is such a damn fine guitarist, and his version of this song is my favorite, without a doubt.
His piano is also under-rated.
He’s very multi instrumental…listen the Scoop albums
Im with ya. Hope you’re well.👍🏻🏴🇦🇺
By far the best cover version of Bob Dylan's song. Love Pete Townshend's acoustic stuff.
This is one of the best songs I've ever heard Townsend do. And that's one hell of a big catalog of music.
Indeed 🎶🎶🎶 we've been blessed to live in his generation of music.
Townsend says it all with some fantastic guitar work.
Remember me to one who lives there for she once was a true love of mine

What an excellent version of this song. Hats off.

Gosh I think it was a super performance!
Nice words.
Totally outstanding performance! Love Peter's singing and wow, what a fantastic guitar player!
Simply gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this.
Pete does Dylan proud! 🤗

Lol. Both are equally fab! And who else can make an Irish jig look killer cool?
I've watched this video over, over and over again. Simply awesome...thanks Pete Townshend!
So many men can relate to this song. They may never admit it but this song reminds them of that one special angel that got away.
Makes me long for family. Must be the melody!
Whenever I hear Pete sing I remember being in my early twenties. His guitar and voice always gave me solace and made me feel like I wasn't alone- that someone else shared my feelings of love and loss. I love this rendition of Girl from the North Country, it has a dreamlike quality.
Same here!
sycamoresalmonpetty, I believe that "dreamlike quality" is the "eerie bits" to which Pete refers.
I just love anything Pete Townshend does....
This is one of those magic pieces of music. That will sneak up on you and haunt you and you will remember that girl.
I have wandered RUclips listening to a lot of covers of this song...I keep coming back to this version...absolutely catches the spirit of this masterpiece!
Townsend, always a complex man. Who really gives flying one, if his music speaks to you. It always has done to me👌🙌👊

Great version of the song that is done well by many artists.

Pete does it very great.
Wonderful
I think the eerie bits are the echoing reverberations of love, across time, space and all other complicated obstacles.
Have loved Pete for his whole career, first time seeing him finger pick a whole song, fantastic, he loves those J-200's, a design bought from Epiphone way back.
I have a J-200 it has a huge sound because it's a super jumbo and the best part is... the midrange cuts right through.
@@guitarrachannel7315 I was told this was a Gibson Hummingbird…. Not so right?
This song I love , sung by so many I believe this could be my favorite version, brings tears to my eyes
Roy harper
ive yet to hear a bad version of this. And this is just stunning.
First time I have ever heard that song, so glad I have, it was wonderful, brought tears to my eyes, got to love an acoustic guitar!
Wow, finally I stopped to hear his version of this song and in no way let down. Love it.
Just goes to show us all... NEVER overlook the Pete...!!
@@vajrapani6474 never, I totally agree. 😉
Thanks for posting. Great song from of Pete's best solo albums.
Pour moi , c'est la plus belle version de cette magnifique chanson .
What about Roy harper
One of my videos that I have watched over and over again. Really cool.
C'est magnifique. Il y a quelque de magique qui passe et qui attaque entre nos oreilles avec une intense émotion.
The genius of bob dylan. I get goosebumps when Cash come in on the second verse of the original version.
The original was earlier: ruclips.net/video/JncbFS5ek74/видео.html
Pete is perhaps my favorite singer in Rock. It’s a great question of what might have been….no Who just solo artist. I’d say he’d be even bigger
I want to meet this man and give him a hug.
Me too. And to discuss philosophy, humor, lyrics and spirituality.
@@IMeMineWho YES!!!!
Best version of this song by far... in my humble opinion :)
Pete does a very smooth version, Luv it!
one of the nicest guys in the business
saw him in 68 on fire 🔥
Beautiful version of a beautiful song.
Most amazing cover.. i can't stop listening
Bob Dylan is flat out, the greatest songwriter of all time.
Here in Covid June 5 2021l
Beautiful
Absolutely indisputable
Bob Dylan didn't write this song it's a traditional English folk song that he took off English folk singers when he visited London in the mid-60s.
Pete's no piker himself!😉
These same lyrics can actually be found in Simon and Garfunkels Scarborough Fair/Canticle. It is an old song that is done in many forms.
"for she once was a true love of mine"
Wow that melody then to go up there
What a trip Thank you and thanks Bob
....the guitar work is stunning here....isn't it?
I want this song to be played at my funeral
May you live long darlin!
I'll always love you as an old friend. This song always reminded me of myself.

I love the fact that even on a relatively gentle and beautiful song like this Pete just can't... keep... still...! Great energy channeled into a wonderful performance and I love those eerie bits too.
This song should be played in small clubs and livingrooms after Midnight. Its too great and personal for this venue.
good call...
Personal is a good way to describe it.
Qui la musica rock diventa arte...se nn è arte questa!. Semplicemente geniali.
cosmic, soulful, my hair stands on end...those long extended notes....
This is a go-to for me, so great.
Think I was there but don't remember anything.
Very emotional performance...
It is quite hypnotic.

That is it, exactly. Soft porn for the soul.
Now NatalieWould2 that is also well said.
So original and perfect. Have to pause to wipe my eye..
Haunting and sublime. God, so beautiful.
"North country FAR" (not FAIR) is the correct lyric. I ought to know I wrote the lyrics!

Pete's version does hit heavy on the borderline ! I just love his version !

Favorite version of this song. Dylan’s is wonderful but this transcends
when the strings come in it gets super epic
He makes this song sound very 'Pete from the Who' ... but I totally love this version :)
BEAUTIFULLY said.

You can say that again.
wow, i was there, a day in the garden, up against the stage! Joni, Lou, Donovan and Melanie too

The guitar, especially the intro, is very reminiscent of I'm One from Quadrophenia.
