  • Drop in on the first Harley Demo days in Dallas Texas to check out the New 2018 lineup! Stand out bike of the day was the 2018 Fat Boy, I must admit... wasn't expecting that!

    I didn't like the bikes when they first came out. the more research I have done, I see they made many improvements. the fatboy is my fav. I haven't ridden one yet.

    Absolutely love the nacelle headlight, that's the deal breaker in my choosing the FatBoy over the Breakout with that horrible Chinese light.

    People complain that HD is too expensive.....HD cut costs by using less chrome and less steel, people still complain. The HD line-up is an overall improvement and that's a step in the right direction.

    I appreciate that the commentator left a lot of time without talking. Plus it sounded like the voice was added later in post and I think that was another good decision. The background music sounds like a blinker is left on tho ha. Looks like a Great Bike!!

    The new suspension by Showa is really good. But, let's face it, a similar system has been on other brands for years and years. Showa has been supplying the suspension for Harley Davidson for over 30 years, but Harley is slow to abandon their ways of doing things. I'm a former Harley Rider. I love Harleys but hate the failures and maintenance. I like to see the advances they've finally committed to. The Milwaukee 8 motor is Porsche designed with some cooperation from HD. The wheels are made in Australia, but top rate. The brakes are made by Brembo of Italy, but there are also brakes made in China. The wiring harnesses are made in Japan and China. The Street 750 and 500 are made in the Knockdown factory in Bagwal, India, and shipped knockdown throughout India and a few other countries. Some of those are sent to the US and assembled here for the US market. It's unclear if there is a part or two made in the US for those models. Other parts are being manufactured and supplied in several countries and shipped here for assembly. The end product is a bike "Assembled in the US". The new models could be rebadged with another Brand and no one would bat an eye. The thing is, the newer models of HD have improved in reliability since most of the bikes are made elsewhere.
    I would also add the blacked out bikes look pretty cool to some, but having black bikes in the past, riding in hot sunny weather, or mounting the bike after it's been sitting in the sun is unpleasant at best.

    hey mack ,video was awesome, i noticed you went with the Road King Special, what made you choose that over the Fatboy? i'm also trying to decide between the 2. Your RKS is awesome by the way.

      Allymac S F thanks man! I put this video out back in August and wrestled pretty hard with the decision over the past 4 months. I had pretty much sold myself on the fatboy... priced out getting bags, backrest, etc. It really came down to touring practicality. Tiff thought the Fat Boy was too similar size/comfort wise to the Fat Bob. One day last month she said, "If you are going to upgrade, it should be an UPGRADE!" That sounded a whole lot like permission :) Plus... the RXS is Sick!

    It's really cool stuff HD and other bike makers allow for these test drives.
    The 2018 HD Fat Bob/Boy are real winners for HD in my opinion. The M8 114 is a great engine.
    Now all one needs with these 2 bikes are headers and maybe just maybe for the real HD rider a stage engine upgrade??? Good review.

    My humble opinion it's all good with new 2018 line ups but why not hydraulic clutch right ? HD upgraded everything even with LED head lamp but still cable clutch ?? 😳

    • @MacksMoto
      @MacksMoto  7 лет назад

      Yup, I think they are picking and choosing their battles for sure. The clutch didn't feel overly heavy, and at least there is still adjust-ability with the cable clutch. I had a hydraulic clutch with my v-rod and it was really smooth but was kind of a bummer because it let out so far and there wasn't an easy way to adjust it.

    • @dcdell2008
      @dcdell2008 7 лет назад

      Actually, if you head over to the HDforum website, lots of touring guys are having issues with hydraulic clutch adjustment, my '14 Limited has hydraulic clutch, no issues so far, but probably, HD wanted to present a minimalist style on the FBoy...plus less maintenance complexity...I like it...

    • @HDR20
      @HDR20 7 лет назад +1

      I have the hydraulic clutch on my 16 street glide and would prefer a cable clutch.

    • @elithegreat6463
      @elithegreat6463 7 лет назад +1

      Cable clutch saves weight. and this was the theme of all the 2018 softail models,,,weight savings.

    • @HDR20
      @HDR20 7 лет назад

      I dont know if i buy that theory. Seems like they are building them cheaper. Look at all the changes across the board I see a lot of money saving items on the softail and the touring bikes. Black and the polished aluminum is cheaper than chrome. seems HD is about the stock holders more and more

    My wife hated the pillion seat on the 2018 Low Rider. We had the demo bike for an entire weekend. After the first 1 and a half hours on the bike, I dropped her off at the train station and she caught the train home. Noting however, with no backrest, she slided toward the narrow rear part of the seat every time I accelerated, even gently. She stated saying just how uncomfortable the bike is after just 5 minutes.The rest of the bike, suspension and handling etc was great. BTW, my wife rides many miles with me and enjoys being on a bike and we've travelled many miles together over the years, she is well qualified to say the passenger seat on the FXLR is a joke and HD is a disgrace for pushing customers to replace a stock seat on a brand new bike because the stock seat sucks.

    • @MacksMoto
      @MacksMoto  6 лет назад

      nevillegreg1 agreed. I haven't seen it, but I think that you can upgrade the pillion section without having to buy a whole new seat. I just bought a new Road King Special and Tiff has been really pleased with the stock seat on that so far.

    • @nevillegreg1
      @nevillegreg1 6 лет назад +1

      It's a one piece seat on the stock FXLR. I am replacing the stock seat with a 2 up Sundowner. I have the Sundowner on my 2004 Sportster and its very good comfort wise. The Low Rider should arrive in about 4 weeks time, its currently on the boat heading to Sydney. Thks.

    Test rode one of these 114's a few weeks back, at first i thought it was tooooo smooth, it felt like a Jap cruiser (compared with my Evo softail), but i guess it gives you extra reliability and therefore piece of mind. At least the torque is still there, id compare the bottom end power about the same as my Indian 111 but it had a bit more top end than the Thunderstroke and smoother too. Still not quite as quick as my dyno'ed Nightrod with Akrapovic exhaust (127hp) but might be a different story with a 117 kit and CNC heads....

    • @MacksMoto
      @MacksMoto  6 лет назад

      I have seen vids of your Nightrod, love that bike man! Yeah, I am with you on first impressions of how smooth the bike is.

    • @bryanhallman8183

      The new 8-series has 2 counter balancers, instead of just one. On the factory upgrades page, there's 2 different cam upgrades, one for torque, and one for power, plus the regular goodies, so it should be able to make more than 127 at the wheel.
