I was on the edge of my seat when John reversed the green and brown wires on the power supply.
Then I started yelling at my screen when he was about to power it on.
I had to go back and see what the pinout was and saw they were both grounds.*whew*
This rebuild is a rollercoaster of emotions ;)
Lol. I did it right. :)
lol. When the sound came on, I went "Yeaaah!!" the same time you did.
Now you've gone and done it. This video has me hunting down some Journey hits.
Don't stop believing!
when you coined up and i heard noise i thought yep its all working!
good work, good idea having the wiring diagram handy, look forward to part 5 john
I love how he just tosses the tools all around after he's done
LOL I know right it's hilarious
Thanks John for helping me procrastinate about my maths exam tomorrow, really helped me not study! I'm going to do great ;-)
One of the best moments when you coin the game up for the first time, i was so happy that it worked after all that work.
Love your videos, watch them every week and keep up the good work..
Thanks! Yeah, it was such a rush when the thing just worked! Sometimes you get lucky. :)
Going to join the chorus here and say that I love watching your videos! I am also a private collector, up to 11 machines myself! I have had issues arise and knew immediately what to do and simply fixed them thanks to you!
Thank you again for these videos, keep them coming!
Thanks a lot! Means much! Glad you got it working.
Hey, John !!
Just wanted to say thanks for posting your tech videos. I know that you're not into mame, but thanks to you and other guys like you in this area of expertise, I was able to build my own bartop arcade machine. Once I get a chance, I'll do a video of it, and how I built it. Thanks again!!
good work
ya baby its alive its one them games you remember and never see :)
Love watching your vids I use my Chrome cast to watch on my TV like a TV show. Lol. keep up the awesome work.
great video man... I can't wait to see the restoration done, and you need to install the cassete player...
awesome john
I will be watching this tonight here in the uk with a nice cold beer, just love your restore videos john
Love the videos! They have inspired to start my own restoration projects. I have watched many videos related to restoration and your excitement and passion shows through and is highly infectious. Keep up the great work!
Really enjoyed this video.
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
Very cool to hear your excitement on completing it. Enjoy.
Every video on your channel is extremely helpful. Was just messing with a very similar issue. Thanks so much.
Thank you! Thanks for watching.
I also loved the part when you said, ok thats it time to turn it on for the first time with everything hooked up. I was screaming at my iPad saying, plug in the power dumb ass lol
😆
Great video John! And congrats on the progress. It's getting close. Can't wait to see next week's vid.
I watched the whole series so far, it's like relaxing to me watching you work on it. Honestly, I don't know all that is going on, but does anyone maybe know of a website that might explain the basics of a cabinet setup, then maybe I could work my way up from there. I'd really love to know more like our awesome host, John! I think its really great how you've taken to this hobby, John, it really shows how much you love and have a passion for it.
Sure must be nice to be able to work on these games like this and bring them back to life! Nice job!
Thanks! I get lucky some time.
This is a great help with my restore Thanks a Million John
Awesome!!! Glad to see it all working, just the monitor, then all the hard stuff is done. I'm actually working on my Sega Super GT right now, and it's kicking my ass.... Have you on in the background for motivation!
Also, tip for ne1. When I have to extend a harness that is cut, I throw a male and female simple Molex connector at the 'splice'. Handy if your soldering iron won't reach or practical (and your not pulling the harness apart/out). I also cut off Molex plugs off anything I throw away, with the tool and a little pulling you can reuse the housings.
Somewhere on VHS, a guy is walking us through his conversion of Journey to Taito US Classic. ;)
Complete with putting the left button right over that guy's head, ha!
great video John...what would be cool instead of the cassette deck, maybe somehow hook up an ipod nano or something and have every great journey song on there!
I'm hoping to use an Arduino and an MP3 shield with it. Stay tuned...
Make Journey Great Again
another great game brought back to life :)
Another great video. Your restore videos inspired me to start my arcade collection. I finally picked up my first arcade game and it will be a bit more of a project than I wanted but who cares, I have my first game. :)
Awesome work as always John. Looking forward on how you handle the music tape from the game.
Excellent video! I look forward to these videos Sundary night and was bummed you didn't have it up! :)
Thanks! Yeah, I uploaded it Sunday night. RUclips takes forever to process these 1080p feature length films. :)
Really awesome that it worked on the first try!
Yeah, right? I couldn't believe it! :)
Nice!!! Work again John!! I cant wait to see next part! :D Keep it up John!
Thanks!
Nice work, pal. Im proud of you.
19:50 : you can make any bit magnetic by rubbing it in one direction several times on a strong magnet.
Sweet. I might try that! Now to find a strong magnet...
Awesome work mate, loved the "it works" moment... Always worth watching to the end, might miss another electric shock if you don't..! ;)
with that awesome arcade you should get one of those sweet display mini fridges! like a coke or pepsi one!
I'd love a coke machine or fridge. If I can find one cheap that fits in my space I'd grab it!
Well done John ! Awesome job.
Thanks!
Great vid Jon. Awesome, keep up the good work!
you can try to make magnetic bits by sliding a strong magnet across them in one direction like 50 times
are you gonna put a tape cassette player in there too?
GRANDE John's Arcade ti invidio BRAVOOO
I gotta google+ message saying you had posted a new video, I was on it like a flash. Looked and it said 1:20 odd I thought, great stuff to be had in this video & boy was I right. You rock mate, loving your work!
Just wondering John, what you have done is great, you have separated the adaptor board away from the power supply, ease of access is the only reason I think it benefits, and that is all you need. BUT, at the start of the vid, your answer on a solid mounting was only 2 screws away, with 2 screws into the 2 holes provided at the top left and right corners of the adaptor board, with 2 spacers/board feet, back to the cab, you would of had it nailed. [screwed, haha.]
Just a thought, nothing more, I love your stuff!
Also, get a cordless with an adjustable clutch, set it so as the screw tightens, the clutch lets go. AND, to magnetize anything, but in this case, a drill bit/driver etc, just rub the bit over a magnet, but only in the one direction, swipe it over a magnet, then do it again, say from top to bottom. INSTANT magnetic bit!!
Take care mate, love yah!!
Yeah, good point. I could have done it that way. But, this way works too!
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Keep up the good work John, us would be techs need an interstellar leader,,, [funny x 10,000 bonus points]
it's alive :) great work! greetings from germany.
Thank you!
I have that same Pac-Man glass from Arby's.
ha! You know, it's my favorite glass. I use it constantly. :) I have two of them.
Up is brown, down is blue. Up is brown, down is blue. Up is brown, down is blue. Up is brown, down is blue.
You can get cleaver with a hanger and 2 gator clips for better "helping hands". A hair drier is a better tool for heat shrink as well.
I did like your trick of stripping the middle of the wire and folding for the ground loop, that yellow crimper kinda sucks tho.
Always triple check your connections (all of em).
Nice job.
Yeah, I need to make some helping hands for the job. Seems like I am splicing a lot of wire lately. LOL.
capacitors- if theres any electrolytics in that little audio amp change all of them.
Yeah, I know. I think I fixed the audio glitch thing. I'll talk about it in the next video.
the big plus of the power adapter of having wire`s and feet is its not in direct contract with the heat from the power switcher and feet give it air flow behind it to help keep the conection plug cool :)
Was I the only one who started singing along with the 8 bit music
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I'm so happy to see your Journey is getting close to 100% done! Did your Journey have one of those leaking MCR Batteries like your Tapper?
No, it didn't have a leaking battery. Someone removed it.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I bet you were glad it didn't have that leaking MCR Battery!
nice man i hoping to a dig dog machine for the house and other arcade machines thanks your vids help alot
The "Hey Now!" at 1:08:45...u must be a Howard Stern fan! "Hey Now!" is a Stern reference.....I listen to Howard every single day...I've listened to every second of every show since he went to SIRIUS....baba booey to you all!
Baba booey baba booey Howard stern's penis baba booey baba booey! -Peter Griffen
Enjoying this series (really, all your videos), does the ending with Journey music play from the PCB, or a cassette loop?
It plays from a cassette player. Which I don't have, so there is no music at the end currently.
Hey John, dont stop believing
congrats jon.
Lol its funny when you throw your tools around
Check out auto parts stores for the connectors. I bought some at one not long ago and they were a good price there. Also, I bought a shrink tube assortment in a nice plastic container from an Autozone that had several sizes in it. You should use some of that larger white shrink tube over the soldered pads on the adapter just to protect it and make sure you don't have any issues later on.
Baby John is on the TV at 1:43:29 lol
wico leaf.. hmm I bet I could 3d print one and use a pinball leaf on there. wonder if that would work.
Maybe! The metal parts are gonna be a little tricky.
Good stuff here as always. I was waiting for this vid to come out over the weekend. Good tip on the ground braid. I didn't know you could strip the wire and bend it like that. I'll see you in the chat room for the podcast. You got my address for the stuff I won, right? I'm wanting that CD and my hot wheel from Derrick!!
Did you e-mail me?!? I didn't see your address. blkdog7@gmail.com
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Just sent it again. Thanks John!
John what happend to bronco you started a series but never finished it :(
hey john I have a arcade problem so installed new joysticks to my carrier air wing in a dynamo cab but when I tried to play the game no response from the joysticks.
It amuses me that you spent ages pissing about soldering and putting PCB feet on a PSU that you don't know whether you're going to keep, and then just screw the amp to the side of the cabinet.
TheTurnipKing The amp has little stand-offs. :)
john what are you going to do with that sprint in your garage.
I need to fix the Sprint 2 monitor. I don't want to think about it right now. :)
do you have a harbor freight near you? thats where i get most of my shit now, sure it looks like china threw up in that store but damn they have way better prices than lowes/home depot lol
Loving these videos, I'm learning so much!
Good work putting proper wires between the PSU and distribution board. Screwing a PCB directly to the PSU would potentially put strain on the board and maybe end up fracturing the PCB traces.
thought you would have used wire color codes for that.
For what?
nice vid john!
...worth a watch ***** :)
How worth it is the power screw driver?
That screw driver? It was like $40 at Home Depot. Wal-Mart sells them too.
good job man, we did it! . gameplay is JO though... ;) and please stop throwing your tools around...
LOL! Did I throw them. Oops
For quick disconnect terminals, you should get a crimper which puts a dent in them (stakes them), like the classic Thomas & Betts WT111. A real one is pretty expensive ($40 or $50), but there are copies out there that most likely work just as well, such as from Irwin (the manufacturer of Vise-Grips) for $13 - www.amazon.com/IRWIN-VISE-GRIP-Forged-Crimper-2078310/dp/B001LOVEGS - or from Gardner Bender for $7.50 - www.amazon.com/Gardner-Bender-GS-388-Crimping-Electrical/dp/B00079LN1Y/ref=pd_lpo_469_lp_t_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=V7REMCV27X7VTK2ZKBQ3
Terminals crimped with a staking-type crimper like these never come off; the wire would break first.
maybe the speaker hook up backwards up top
4-way joystick? Journey is supposed to have an 8-way joystick.
Really? who knew lol I would've thought John would've seen that in the manual or klov
Good job on getting it working. The game looks like it kinda sucks though, looks way to simple, no lasting appeal, you'll be trading it with in 6 months. ;)
How dare you! Sucks!?! hahahah. This game will be a keeper, for now! :)
Hey John,
Yeah, there are definitely some sounds missing from your game. You can hear it for sure in the song "Chain Reaction." Compare yours with the following video:
ruclips.net/video/yEU4N-Wxr-I/видео.html
Hope to see you guys back in Boise, Idaho at Grinkers again sometime! Great videos!
Jason
You sure?? I'm not hearing it!
What song is Chain Reaction? Which mode?
Chain Reaction plays on the jet pack level with Neal Schon. Compare yours with the RUclips link in my original post.
