When I was 16 I got zapped by a Vectrex vector monitor, it nearly blasted me across the room. Man I'll never forget that one. Lesson learned. Another great vid John, thanks! :)
It's funny, all the years going to the arcade I never realized how much work goes into these arcade cabinets, especially maintaining them, I can only imagine being an arcade owner back in the day and having to keep them up and running and the abuse they took from all the people coming and going. I like the jazzy PBS style music you were playing this episode, reminds of "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" or that country style music reminds me of an episode of "This Old House." lol jk Thanks, John. I love the arcade and the cabinets I grew up with, but you give me an appreciation for them. And thanks for all the work you put into them and the videos you edit, convert and upload. A lot of time spent working on this project! You've got my respect, man!
Your video was very informational. Ironically enough, I've been repairing vids and pins for about 10 years and haven't installed a cap kit yet, but will tomorrow. Thanks to your video! We'll see how it goes. :)
Excellent video! I'm looking to do my first discharge and cap kit sometime next week after I get my box of goodies from Bob. This tutorial is exactly what I needed to know what to expect to dispel some of the fear and mystery of monitors (despite being a collector for 15 years). I also enjoyed the uncertainty and troubleshooting process when trying to figure everything out -- it brought things down to earth a bit and showed that you're not going to know everything, but you can take a little time and figure it out. Thanks!!!
That's why it's always best to remember how the old cap was installed.. I always study and see which side the negative line of the old cap is facing on the board of any electronics I restore..
Jumpers! My Pac Man screen was off, and no amount of coil adjustment could fix the issue. I centered both jumpers and now my screen is perfect. Great video, thanks again.
Always a good show, man. Ben Heck is mainly an engineer as far as i can tell, but u get down and dirty wit the mechanics of things. Keep the learning experiences coming bro. Always interesting, bro.
I enjoyed seeing all the monitor adjustments you did in this video. Interesting stuff. I have a big CRT television with old game consoles hooked up to it which I'm pretty sure is out of whack. These videos are helping give me some confidence to tackle those adjustments.
I got one tube in my super Street Fighter 2 big Blue cab that has a bad corner, there is a bend on it top right corner, even changed the chassis over and it's definitely the the tube, no amount of board adjustment will correct that so I used a convergence strip, they are very handy for geometry issues and convenience issues, I managed to get that screen perfect.
Good vid, John. Just a quick tip...there's actually a very systematic way for adjusting the convergence. Check out page 6 of the wells k7000 service manual and it explains it real nicely. You're basically adjusting the static convergence, and you use the first rings to get the vertical red & blue to line up vertically over each other, then you move the rings together to get the red & blue to line up horizontally. The next set of rings are used for moving the red/blue vertically over the center (green). Then they are moved together to get the red/blue to move horizontally over the center (green.) I know you have a G07, but the concept is the same and will save you LOTS of time. It's pretty simple - I've done it many times. Dynamic convergence is another story (adjusting the yoke to fix the convergence on the outside of the grid). (This is jimbodeanny from KLOV by the way). Keep up the good work!!
Oh, and I TOTALLY hear you on the time invested on adjusting these monitors. I feel the same way and definitely spend the most amount of time adjusting & fine tuning the monitors in these games. If you're like me, one blemish will bother you forever until it's fixed. We're all perfectionists and let's be fair -- you're going to be looking at the monitor every time and all the time when playing the game. It's possibly the most crucial part to these games! It makes sense to invest the time needed to getting them to look as close to perfect as possible.
Hey, thanks for the info. I have done this a bunch of times and for some reason I just go for it and started moving stuff and watch what it does. I always get it dialed in... eventually. :) Maybe I should read the manual some day. LOL!
dinkyflix Yeah, I totally agree! And, I spent another hour working on the monitor the next day. I didn't film it. Right now the monitor looks 10x better than it did at the end of this video. It really is worth the effort!
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech That's fantastic! It feels SO good when you get it looking the way you want it. I just successfully did my first tube swap and my wife was giving me weird looks when I got all excited, hooting & hollering. I do like those G07s - they're workhorses and really easy to rebuild, but you're right. The adjustments are ass and unconventional. Why can't they just have pots for everything?! I don't even understand the labeling on the pots. I had the exact same curl on the right side on my Ms. Pac and I literally had to use every pot to get it out -- particularly the horiz frequency. Stupid. Glad you got yours looking good! Looking forward to the video where you wire up the cassette deck!
I have four monitor chassis that I want to replace caps on, I just don't trust my soldering skills enough to do this yet. Thanks for the great videos though, new subscriber.
Just some info on the missing sounds issue you had in this video: In one of the earlier parts of this series, it looked to me like this game uses a pair of General Instruments AY-3-8910 sound chips. Those were a popular classic sound chip from the early 80s. They each have 3 sound channels, which each output on a separate pin. 2 of them together gives the 6 channels that showed up in the test mode (probably stereo separated for 3 per speaker). The missing sound channel was probably either a bad chip, or a bad joint at the pin. Once the signal leaves the 3 output pins, they usually get mixed together very quickly, so with only one dead channel it could probably be narrowed down to a very small area of the board. If the chips were socketed, then you could have tried simply swapping them with each other and see if the problem moves from channel 2 to channel 5. If it did, you'd know you had a bad chip, and replacing it would fix it.
Hey John, Awesome news about the fix for the missing sounds! I'm ultra OCD when it comes to classic arcade game audio. MAME gives me a twitch because so many of the sounds are still a WIP on so many games. Glad you'll be able to enjoy the "pure" sound of Journey soon. Looking forward to the finished product! Jason
BTW, hard drives contain magnets, so if you have a dead hard drive lying around, you can probably remove its magnets and use them to magnetize your screwdriver bits. I don't know if they're strong enough, but it could work I guess. :P
Hey John - I had wanted to chime in to say thanks for the videos. I will follow your lead for the Spy Hunter I had just acquired, which has similar display problems. Also, I know it's late notice, but you can get a strong magnet from an old Hard Drive. If you want a few, just let me know... -d
John, how do you do it? How do you not wash your monitors and boards? I'm cringing watching this with such a filthy board. I wash all mine first thing with a strong mix of Simple Green and gently rinse with the hose. Then I use my air compressor to blow it all dry. It doesn't take too long and everything looks brand new. It's so easy. Love the old vids. I've been going back though them.
Just gonna say the same thing. Guess when you do it for a living or work on someone else's stuff you gotta work with what you're given. I wash my boards in the dishwasher!
Wow, that's crazy about the mislabeled capacitor! I wonder how many people recapped their G07 and had that cap go boom because they didn't know about the error... O_O
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Are you sure? read that cheat sheet again. I've capped a dozen G07's with Bob's kits and a decade ago, it was on the sheet. I can't imagine he would have removed that info. Edit: Pause the video at 24:20 and look at the third paragraph. It says "**C302 is silked wrong on the bottom"
You said this was built off the same kind of hardware as Tapper? Thats amazing the stuff those boards could do. As for the game play I agree with ya its a classic. What your expecting Halo here? Nice work man my father is a electronics guy. Repairs older amps and such. He says hes a it scared to mess around on anything with micro processors on them since it be so easy to bur them out with the soldering iron but wiring and anything with tubes or transistors he can fix.
I have the same monitor in Crystal Castles... The picture is very wavy, Checked the B+ (thanks to your video to show me the testing location), it was at 115.3. So after playing with it for a while, I got it to a very stable 120.0. The when text is on the screen, the wavy is gone but, when the map comes on the screen it comes back... is this a cap kit needed thing, or any idea ?
Great vid john as always. You go john you blow that arcade and rub your bits on a magnet lol. Cant wait to next vid watching all the way from england sheffield
Man, how great would that be if Ben Heck gets in touch with you! I've been a fan of his for a while, and his mods and original ideas are genius! Shoot, he could probably turn your Journey game into a handheld if he wanted to! LOL Love your videos, and you're right, that monitor is passable, but not outstanding. It should work fine for the meantime though! Great job as always!
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech That's a great idea John! If anyone would like to e-mail him, his address is benjamin.heckendorn@gmail.com. If enough of us send in a request, you never know, he might just do it!
Great video!!!! About that curl , I was looking at a game that had the same problem, is there a way on fixing that? or did you just stretch the screen out ?
Thanks for covering convergence, are you merely rotating the ring pairs around or actually separating them? If you are not rotating them, what position should they be in? I'm doing this on a 20EZ if that matters.
I'm separating the three pairs from each other. It's a LOT of trial and error. I probably spent an additional 30 minutes on this not shown in the video just converging the monitor.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Wish you would list the music you use during the fast forward sequences. The guitar piece sounds familiar but I can't nail it down. >.
Hey John. I have a 1999 hydro thunder. The monitor went out and there is a beeping going on. Sound still works so game play is there. Can I get some advise?
Doesn't this game have a cassette tape that plays a Journey song when you beat it? I'm sure that's what Wikipedia says. Do you have the mechanism or is it very hard to find a working one?
Yes, it originally had a cassette player. We covered that in the early vids in this series. I am working on getting the cassette interface board now or I might come up with a more modern solution to play the song at the end of the game. Stay tuned!
Cheers John. Had a feeling you might have covered this already. I'd go watch the other episodes but your videos are so much more thorough (longer!) these days, I just don't have the time. ;)

John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I know right?! I went ahead and responded telling him it was indeed a loop tape that operated off of a separate board that triggered the player when needed. I guess we'll see what else he has to say! Would you rather I respond to an e-mail address rather than posting here? Please don't be angry with me! I never expected at all to hear from him! Have a great day!

Was that you that noticed that!? Good catch. I got the new pcb already. What a difference!
Yup, that was me that reported it in the last video. This game for sure deserves audio perfection! :)
Cheers!
Jason
Thanks for the video I played along while doing my G07! Works great big help.
John, If I am not mistaken, Journey has a Cassette player that loops a Cassette of Separate Ways during the Concert. You should look into it.
Great show! I love the tech stuff.

BTW, hard drives contain magnets, so if you have a dead hard drive lying around, you can probably remove its magnets and use them to magnetize your screwdriver bits. I don't know if they're strong enough, but it could work I guess. :P
JOHN, THANKS FOR THE LONG VIDZ MAN!I GO TO BED WATCHING YOUR SHIT !NO HOMO.
hahahahahha! Glad you are enjoying it. :)
love the lightning strike scaring you. LOL
Well what can I say, fantastic video John. Now onto the outside.
Bob Roberts....the man.
I took a pinball playfeild to home depo to match 2 colors but the orange was a flourescent they couldn't match it , but the purple match perfect

Pro tip : you can watch series at flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching all kinds of movies lately.
@Fox Kellan Yea, I've been watching on flixzone for since december myself :D
Hey John, about rubbing the bits on a magnet, try it on the magnet behind the speakers...
Great video as always. Never actually did a cap on a monitor, but I'm sure I'd be able to do it. Thanks for showing us!
By the way, which video shows you rejuving the monitor? I'd like to check it out.
Del, this is a gem of a comment, a snapshot in time lol I'm sure you'll do just fine ;)
@@billyscarbrough Ha ha. This is GREAT!
I like the guitar pickin'.
Another awesome video!
Love your stuff!
use magnets/convergence strips to fix the curling/bad geometry
Wow, that's crazy about the mislabeled capacitor! I wonder how many people recapped their G07 and had that cap go boom because they didn't know about the error... O_O
Yeah, I'm glad I caught that. I surprised Bob doesn't mention this on his cap kit cheat sheet.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Are you sure? read that cheat sheet again. I've capped a dozen G07's with Bob's kits and a decade ago, it was on the sheet. I can't imagine he would have removed that info.

The "u" you keep saying on a capacitor size is the Greek letter mu. Labeled as micro farad. :P
As always John great vid.

i am happy you like my little gift ;-)
Thanks, Eitenne! I love it! :)
Great video!!!! About that curl , I was looking at a game that had the same problem, is there a way on fixing that? or did you just stretch the screen out ?
Hey john I have a pole position 2 that only shows half screen , I adjust it blurs out scramble what you think is going on???
Thanks for covering convergence, are you merely rotating the ring pairs around or actually separating them? If you are not rotating them, what position should they be in? I'm doing this on a 20EZ if that matters.
I'm separating the three pairs from each other. It's a LOT of trial and error. I probably spent an additional 30 minutes on this not shown in the video just converging the monitor.
I've gotten zapped by those anode buttons before and it feels the same as getting zapped by an ignition coil on an automobile
Awesome video! I have a Tron with this monitor. I get a weird small waving effect from left to right, like a wave :D on it. Any ideas what it can be?
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Wish you would list the music you use during the fast forward sequences. The guitar piece sounds familiar but I can't nail it down. >.
All the music in the videos is by me and my bands. My band is called The Kill Screens. Available on iTunes and Amazon.
White Tiger Gaming Actually, that acoustic ditty in this video was not by me. Just checked. :) It was a song that came with iMovie. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Interesting. *hmm*
1:10:28 heard this song in this old house before
Thanks that whas good a need that mine is not working
Hey John. I have a 1999 hydro thunder. The monitor went out and there is a beeping going on. Sound still works so game play is there. Can I get some advise?
I have a Ms Pacman, the game starts w/a fuzzy scrambled screen, then once it warms up, it's ok, what do I need to do to fix this?
I don't understand why so many people consider this a terrible game. It's kind of fun, honestly.
I love the game! It's pretty fun.
On the convergence rings what kind of glue did you put on them to keep them in place?
I used a cheap hot glue gun. It's like $5.00 at Michaels.
I'm kinda disappointed you didn't dust it off more. ;)
Not sure if joking or serious. :) The monitor is actually pretty clean now! It was filthy when I started.
I'm just messing with you John. However, it could be a little cleaner. ;)
Tony Graf ha. It's not bad. Leave me alone! :)
You know what your fellow chicago boy Billy Corgan said; "cleanliness is next to godliness and god is empty just like me" ;)
Must Be A Real Pain In The Ass Dealing With That Stubborn G07 Monitor, Mannnnnn!!!!!!!!
Does bob use Japanese caps?
Doesn't this game have a cassette tape that plays a Journey song when you beat it? I'm sure that's what Wikipedia says. Do you have the mechanism or is it very hard to find a working one?
Yes, it originally had a cassette player. We covered that in the early vids in this series. I am working on getting the cassette interface board now or I might come up with a more modern solution to play the song at the end of the game. Stay tuned!

What about cap kit for WG K7000 (7600-7900)?
picture is pulsating and waving is the B+ going high ?
Sure that's not the camera? It's very stable. I also watched the B+ off camera for awhile. It's rock solid.
must just be the camera! if you watch your video back you can see the picture "twerking"
nice job man your gonna need a bigger basement!
Discharging a CRT can kill you if done improperly.
Speakers have them

G07 are pain butt , i cap two them and still got that curl on the bottom right :(
Yeah, I worked some more on the monitor after the video I got it looking even better. I hate G07s!
John, would you believe, Ben actually e-mailed ME back! Here's what he sent to me.
"I'd say replace it with a microcontroller and some sort of SD card storage, and trigger it when tape drive was originally triggered.
Was that original tape on a loop or something?
-Ben"
I'm like seriously geeking out here. I never expected that he would answer my e-mail! AHH!! What do I do?! LOL

John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I know right?! I went ahead and responded telling him it was indeed a loop tape that operated off of a separate board that triggered the player when needed. Kevin Patrick Did you tell him to get ahold of me?
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Yes sir, I did. I told him to look for a John Jaykobson in e-mail and Twitter. I hope that's ok! :)
Kevin Patrick yep. Totally cool
uf stands for microfarad
John hey game
Hey john is ms pacman a mcr game.
No, it is not. I think that's a NAMCO design originally.
John... it is not uF but µF... microfarad.
I actually know that and have been waiting for someone to call me on it. LOL!
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech haha
so what to do at 10,000.. Give away a game! Preferably to a KLOVER.
Very nice tut, but it would have been much more interesting if the presenter had done something involving troubleshooting.
