@@RRRR0707 this is a funny argument.
Even under the assumption that is correct and the US had plans to do that...
So instead of the US stationing troops in Ukraine under contract with the Ukrainian government, so peaceful troops in the country, without war. Russias answer is a full scale invasion, killing thousands in the process, which makes them somehow the good side??
The US would still not have touched russian soil, they would still not have made the actual "threat" to russia any bigger.
By the way, avoiding imperialistic agression and ensuring peace by strategically placing military bases around the globe, is not the agressive part of this equation. Or would you agree, that if russia placed military bases in Mexico, under agreement and contract with the mexican people and government, the US had every right to attack and overthrow the mexican government??

Not really, I think this is calculated as distance from the border. So in terms of actual square miles Russia is very steadily moving the entire hundreds mile long eastern border mile after mile into Ukraine. (A staggering amount of territory totaled up but the map looks very similar zoomed out).
In addition the territory claimed by Ukraine isn't territory taken but where troops have traversed including saboteurs moving ahead of the main force. The fog of war is thick. It takes a week or so for decent territorial confirmation.
I'm concerned that this won't cause much troop movement from the eastern or southern fronts and instead allow the Russians to drown the Ukrainian elites in conscripts only useable in Russia. Or merely hold them in place basically neutralising them.
I hate to say it, but this feels like the battle of the bulge, the last hurrah before the inevitable.

Not even close. Russia controls a large landmass and has a large population, but their population is old, their economy is middle-of-the-pack and technologically they lag. For example: Mexico is a stronger world power than Russia. They have around the same population but their population is younger, their economy is more diversified and they have a larger manufacturing capacity. Do you consider Mexico a world super power?
This misconception about Russia arises because Russia was in its path to becoming a world super power before WW1. Even before industrializing, it was a heavy weight champion in the world stages against the other word superpowers including France, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire. Their population was growing fast and they had a path to liberalize their economy. Unfortunately, the Soviets won. The Russian economy grew while industrialization (which the Tsar prevented before) occurred but this did not occur organically and since Soviet industry was protected from external markets, it became less competitive over time. Just 1% of growth per year more over a lifetime makes the difference between filthy wealth and poverty. The Soviets squandered the momentum Russia could have used to become the dominant power of Europe with bad policy to the detriment of themselves and the Russian people. Now Russia has the economy of Spain but the average Russian is way poorer than the average Spaniard. The effect of Soviet policy over the Russian economy can be easily observed comparing the Koreas or China before/after economic liberalization. Imagine if the Soviets lost! Unfortunately they won. Now Russia is on the way out (just look at demographics, they are an old middle income country), this is their last war unless something drastically changes.

@@Ukraine_Takes_Moscow It depends on your definition of breakthrough “A breakthrough occurs when an offensive force has broken or penetrated an opponent's defensive line, and rapidly exploits the gap.”
There aren’t really defensive lines along the border as they’d just be shelled constantly. So Russia (and Ukraine) setup their lines back from the border. Ukraine has crossed the border but haven’t (yet) managed to push past the first line of Russian defenders/villages.

So, let's recap this epic fail of Russian border security:
    1. Russia, a supposed superpower, got its ass handed to it by a surprise attack from its much smaller neighbor.
    2. Putin, the tough guy, is now playing defense while his troops are getting slaughtered in Ukraine.
    3. The Russian elite, those pillars of stability, are suddenly shitting their pants about being next on the chopping block.
It's like watching a toddler lose at hide-and-seek. Poor Putin. Between the Ukrainian jabs and his own incompetence, he's turning into a global laughingstock. Maybe it's time for Russia to invest in some better alarm systems.

I dont see the emergence of the Kursk resistance in fact it appears that the locals are more intent on looting their neighbours

Russia should surrender and let Ukraine keeps the land they invaded. That way, it won’t lose more grounds and keep its citizen safe and no more needed to keep evacuating. Moscow also may fall if this continues to advance. Or they can just trade their land with Crimea and then sign a paper to make Ukraine withdraw. Peace. And everyone gets their land back. Happy ending.

At this point... Yeah, Ukraine getting their land and peace back is definitely non negotiable.
But... The pain, suffering and death Russia caused... I don't know how comfortable I am to just let that slide.
Normally, if we followed WW2 logic, the allied forces would march into russia, grab their corrupt leadership and purge it, like they did with the Nazis. Then try to rebuild the mentality of the population, trying to bring it into the global community for lasting peace.
But you can't do that with a psychopath sitting on a bunch of rocket propelled, intercontinental Nukes. :(
I really wonder what the international long term strategy for russia is. You can't ignore them, we tried that, they started a war. You can't trade with them, they try to let your population freeze in winter. We can't also let them recover their military power, that would just cause bigger problems in the future. Really a gigantic international problem...
The only strategy for lasting peace with russia I see is the same strategy they did with west germany after WW2, everyone, including the people in russia would be better off, but... Nukes...

dag…, I agree with you. I will add that it’s questionable if Russia has even taken care of their nukes. They no longer have the capability to send troops into a hot radioactive zone. They are not trained or equipped for such operations. Putin is a lying bully. It’s all he’s got.

Most likely hiding in his bunker, behind a gigantic desk, where he's pushing around little markers representing units that were destroyed ages ago, while his generals are telling him they're _just_ about to win against Ukraine, because they're scared shitless he'll find out they sold all their weapons, equipment, ammunition, underwear and boot laces on the black market, and thus have them thrown out of a window... russia really is a big fat _joke,_ although not a very funny one, primarily just a lame and cringy one...
