I never learned how to cook lol - my mother didn’t either and I’m 70 now. I have made quite a few of your recipes and I am amazed - so detailed and easy to follow. Thanks ❤
I grew up in Bombay and our cook made this all the time- but we called it Caramel Custard. I’ve been longing to make it myself but couldn’t remember how many eggs to cups of milk. So here I am at 73 SO SO HAPPY to be making this so easy recipe tomorrow!! 😊
The Spaniards also conquered the Philippines and, same with Mexico, left us with flan among other things. We call ours “leche flan”. Our recipes are almost the same except we don’t use whole eggs, we only use (depending on the recipe, 10-12) yolks. The coffee flan sounds good. Filipino variations do half pound cake/half flan cakes, or ube flan also. We also love to add the flan into our halo-halo.
Spain created both Philipines and Mexico. In Mexico they allied with local opptessed local tribes and overtrown the aztecs that practiced human sacrifices to the sun-god, and charged humans as tax of these oppressed tribes so they could perform those sacrifices. The philipinean tribes were oppressed by mainly ronin (japanese pirates) and had a big cultural devolepment under the spanish rule. Also one of the main figures of philipinean independence regreated his position years later, even attending the spanish king cemitery and asking for forgiveness, as the spanish treated the philipineans far better than the americans that substituted then.
I love flan! First dessert I learned how to make from a very young age (I'm Cuban American). My mom loved adding a little cream cheese for a thicker texture. I'm thinking of making either a pumpkin or eggnog flan for Thanksgiving next month! Thank you for sharing!!!!
Oh my goodness! 😲 I was thinking I'll bet adding cream would make it that much creamier then you said egg nog?? WHAT?? Egg nog Flan, could there be anything more lovely? 😋😋😋
Please do Choco Flan!! It is a Mexican favorite! My mum used to make us flan with chocolate underneath! It is so delicious and delightful!!! Your content is amazing Preppy, keep up the good work!
I always use a nonstick pan to make the caramel for flan. I guess it's because no one told me it's more difficult to make it that way. I also.never add water (though I understand its purpose). It wasn't in the way I learned. I always make flan de café for a friend who's been to Spain and enjoyed it there. Different recipe, but I want to try your recipe for the custard. It looks a lot easier/less time-consuming than mine in which I take milk and sugar and cook until it reduces before tempering the eggs and adding everything else.
I honestly thought I heard a train🤣🤣 that is the COOLEST tea pot I've ever heard!!! And I love love love flan so I can't wait to give this recipe a whirl😋😋😋
You should put a tea towel in the bottom of your roasting pan. Keeps the flan pan from moving in roasting pan when you are transferring in and out of oven.
Hey John, Sri Lankan live in Australia. Made your New York cheese cake and made Aussies shocked and I tried many of your recipes. Amazing! Will try this. Thanks
It look so delicious 😋 I have to follow your recipe for this one! I have a request for you to do can you please make pumpkins muffin with almond flour with out AP flour 🙂
Incredible flan you made, got to love the original though for me it's a bit to soft for my taste. I tend to add some creamcheese into the mix as to make it firmer.
Hi John; I love your shows, you have a great personality; I also love the cinematography, of the filming. The kitchen, looks great; Love, love, love your kitchen. When I traveled to Barcelona, I always had flan for dessert. Speaking of Spain, could you make an Octopus, dinner? P..S there are two kinds of flan, hard shell and soft shell . Scrape, Scrape, Scrape; All the very best, Shaun🦉 of New York City🗽
A Latin dessert, so many variants exists. Cheese flan (cream cheese), coconut flan (substitute half milk quantity for coconut milk), add rum for a rum one, pumpkin, breadfruit versions also exist,
Flan is EXTREMELY POPULAR in all countries that were Spanish colonies, especially in Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Mexico. I love the dulce de leche or coconut versions ...
I have made this recipe which is pretty common to many Latin American countries. Personally I use a lighter recipe which uses just whole milk and sugar to replace the 2 cans of condensed and evaporated milk. The result is a lighter tasting flan.
I would recommend not adding the hot water until the pan is in the oven to reduce risk of burns due to sloshing water. Extend the oven rack, set the pan on the rack, add the hot water, and then gently push the oven rack back into place.

Did you ever mess up with the caramel? Or did you use the same pan as him
Flan is amazing but that train whistle kettle is *chef's kiss* perfection!

What did you just call the chocoflan?
Leche flan, Philippine style, is my favourite version of this dessert. You can't beat the velvety smoothness.
@@matmar05 I didn’t mention chocoflan 🤨 I was referring to him mentioning putting coffee as a variation. I’m confused by your question.
The best leche flan is in the Philippines

It’s also popular in 🇵🇹. Can’t wait to try this. Thank you.
Omg, I love flan!! My kids step-mom is from the Philippines and her flan is amazing!
Looks fantastic!! The only thing I'd change when I make it is let the sugar caramelize a bit longer. It needs to be darker and a bit bitter 😉
I love your work pan. We can tell it is very loved. ❤
Never made Flan.
Love the train whistle tea kettle..

wow! looks absolutely delicious!
perfect John! thank you 🙏 just in time for my next potluck party! back home we call this Leche Flan.. now I can see this name is literal translation😁
Our leche flan in the Philippines has a more caramel colored top. My Mom melts the sugar directly in the baking pan without any water.
Love Flan
We people of Bangladesh called this dessert "pudding". It's a delicious food. Thank you preppy kitchen ❤
This recipe is the best flan you will ever eat. Also, it's true traditional flan.
I was just rewatching season 2 of The Lincoln Lawyer and wondered what this was, perfect timing.

OMG John, I haven't had flan in 15 plus years. I cannot wait to sink my teeth in this.
HEAVENLY DIVINE ❤
you can add some lime zest to add some zing to the sweetness of the flan
Omg wait a chai spice added to this would be so yum
Omg I want that train kettle while I try this yummy flan. ❤
Flan is the best
In Uruguay it is simply made with milk, eggs and sugar plus the caramel.
Also in India but I didn’t remember the proportion of eggs to milk.
i make the version with the block of cream cheese blended in to almost this exact recipe and OH BOY..
i usually check on other baking vlogs but i always come back to your channel. maybe bcoz of my trust in you_❤_
Oh good heavens!! I would run for the storm cellar when I heard that kettle shriek!!!
It sounds like our tornado warning siren!! That doesn’t sound like a train whistle! 😂
@@sandyaw3057 Agree, it doesn't sound like the trains that pass through our town but definitely sounds like the tornado sirens!
That totally threw me off. I was looking around 😭

Is the best custard made with whole or evaporated milk for best flavor and firmness?

Hi!!! Big fan of the channel, I wanted to ask, can it be made in an air fryer instead of an oven??? And what changes are needed if so???
I remember flan made with guava and orange, perhaps orange zest?
Where can I buy that fantastic tea kettle with the train whistle?
For mine i steam it cuz it's ya know traditional cooking of flan here😊
I can’t watch this before bed, or I’ll end up baking at 1 AM. 😂
